Life is just so much easier if you can make enough from repairs and not have to sell machines. When you guarantee a machine you’re guaranteeing dozens of parts at the same time as compared to a repair where you’re guaranteeing one or occasionally two parts. Plus with selling there’s all the shifting about and installing etc. Great if you really love hard work for little reward.
And on top of all that there’s extra PLI to pay!

iv started recons as to spread my wings somewhat as repairs went a gear down in sales figures, been knocking out about 5 recons a week, just to customers who’s machines are BER, customer perception here, i found that the usual joe bloggs is happy to pay say £125 or £150 for recon if a good one is available, zanussi if i can get them or hotpoint wm’s ie 52’s or 62’s i clean them up until their sparkling and look like new selling each one with a user manual and warranty certificate and wrap them up in cling wrap!, each one with a years warranty(brave i know 😯 ) until now iv only had the odd callout!!! to be honest im quiet amazed at how little service calls iv done to the machines but after saying that i give each one a good once over, iv started putting certain new parts on wm’s ie red interlock, gen hotpoint brushes, and new bearings, and then selling for a good price each time. anyone struggling to make ends meat id recommend this route as its certainly topped up my end of week wage to the point of quiet reasonable,i have one supplier for the machines a local scrap man, hes out hunting for hotpoint wm’s as we speak 😆

And youre to be applauded for that simonb, i really mean that, its a very environmentally sound thing to do
And if youre making a buck from it, all the better. I just never found a way round the spurious, timewasting calls in the guarantee period. youre brave with that years guarantee 😯 😉 )Maybe the Scots like a bit more than their moneys worth? 😉 dunno, but i’ll just stick to repairs i think. 🙂

Five re-cons a week! That’d be a good two weeks work for me even if I had the premises, the transport and most of all the customers ready to pay £125. And then to be able to find the raw machines. I guess you must be in a large urban centre.
Well, respect to you for being so industrious when others would accept defeat.

on a bad week i can see 2 or a good week maybe 6? so maybe average is 3-4 a week? i work from the back of my house but very respectful to my neighbours (its a noisy place anyway) i have a lock up garage close by to home for storage that costs about £50 a month, i dont have a van i use my mondeo hatch that we call the tardis as i can put 2 machines in back with plenty of room left.
iv been their with shop life got the t-shirt iv settled for no overheads at all, or very little, i dont pay any advertising at all now, if just found by trial and error this works, no stress and most of takings are profit,my moral and motivation also has increased with it knowing that when a bad spell comes i wont end up in the nut house biting my fingernails to the bone.
yes your right its highly populated close by to city centre as well, i tell you what is a pain in the butt is working in the evening especially in the city centre appartments i suppose you cant have it always,
i ended up going down this route by chance after 2 years out due to illness just working a few hours a day at first when i eased myself back into it.

ie: we say “we will call between 2 &5” customer hears “we will be on your doorstep at 2”or customer says “Ill be on school run 3-3.30″ which means ” Ill be out 2.30-4.30 if your lucky”

Don’t do sales at the minute, haven’t done re-cons for 20 years or so.new machines are such a dissapointment I’ve pulled the plug on them too,all to reduce hassle where possible.
it’s easier when you are nearing retirement you can pick and choose when you have no overheads bar the vehicles, different when there is a mortgage and kids etc to finance.
Customers what can you say that hasn’t been said on here, there are always some gems waiting around the corner who make up for rest and help keep the faith.
Went into a house to repair a microwave and asked the lady”what’s the problem with it?” she replied in a strained voice “”your supposed to be the expert” ansd stormed upstairs 😯 .

About turned and walked out,I’m no phsychiatrist just an engineer!I carefully avoid asking anything like that, I generally ask “What’s happening with your machine (or cooker or whatever)?” i.e. just ask about symptoms.

Dunno if i’ve posted about the type i encountered today ( and many other days :rolls: ) the pocket change man. It is always a man, stands in close proximity, hands in pockets, watching your every move in silence, save for the regular jangling of the aformentioned coins every 12 seconds.. precisely. :rolls:
I find that annoying i do 😯

Arrrrggghhh… I hate him, hate him to hell, undoubtably THE most annoying sod ever.
He’s always full of helpful advice to such as “did you know you’ve left a screw there”. Also he used to be an engineer and if he was 10 years younger he could fix it himself.

Today,we have all had this.
On the mobile booking a call. Mobile rings and goes to voicemail on the mobile ring me please so I do. When on mobile landline rings and goes to answerphone. On the mobile customer says booked elsewhere and all that within 3 minutes(bugger). I get to answerphone and ring back but again booked elsewhere again within 3/4 minutes(double bugger). Ain’t no one got any patience. 😈
Then the “what’s your call out”, tell them £20 estimate then £20 more plus parts but can’t say more ‘cos you don’t know the make, just it isn’t heating. a pause……………………………………….I’ll ring you back when I decide. I knew you wouldn’t. 👿
Still did get a couple of good calls afterwards.

The other day I went into a house with the small socket set/tool-box I always take in first of all to get me into the machine. My main tool-box is very heavy and stays in the van. After a few minutes I said to the guy that I needed another spanner from the van and would be back in a minute. When I get back in the house he’s rooting through my tool box, half the contents are on the worktop and he says: “You’ve got some spanners in here you know.” 😈
If the job hadn’t been for a building contractor I do a lot of work for I think I’d have told him exactly what I thought of him.

AWM1100 washing machine, not starting.
Me “You need a new door lock. £49 total.”
Cust “Thats expensive.”
Me “Have you had other quotes?”
Cust “No.”
Me “Ok. Well I’ve got the lock in the van and can do it now.”
Cust “I thought it would be £25.00 to repair.”
At this point I was close to poking her in the eye.
She finally accepted price and job was completed.
Thank God.
