Hi Guys!
Just like to say a great THANKS!!! for all the efforts put in on here to help us humble fellows.
Ordered the repair kit on tuesday and it arrived this morning ,looks the biz and good instructions.
Only question is ,do capacitors have to be installed a certain way round ie: are they directional?
Cheers AshSeptember 10, 2009 at 12:11 pm #142219broddersbaldrick

Well after years of clicking, funny noises, ice and water failures, and then finally a complete ability to freeze failure my Whirlpool has been saved from the dreaded landfill and is back in A1 condition with everything working thanks to Brodders (John)
He went out of his way not only to make the ‘not that short’ trip last weekend to fit the ‘standard fix’ capacitors, which in my case failed to completely solve the failure, returning to pick up the front and rear boards, testing them back at his Whirlpool bat cave repair centre, finding the extra faults that were causing the unit to ‘not get cold’ returning once again ‘back down south’ and fitting the boards which 24 hours later appear to be a complete 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} back to ‘as new’ repair, we have no noises, we have ice, we have a smooth delivery of chilled water, and most importantly of all frozen food! 😀So top marks to Brodders for going above and beyond the call of duty to keep another Whirlpool working away and not filling a big hole in the ground.
I hope what has been learned from my failures and what was needed to be replaced to get it back to life helps someone elses unit to be repaired and saved from the landfill.
It always seemed a shame to look at throwing away a perfectly good unit because £20 worth of electrical components had failed.Brodders you’re a top man, if you’ve got a problem with a Whirlpool he’s your man. 8)

Hello all.
It sounds like I have a similar problem to what many of you have endured – the clicking, freezer losing temperatute, ice machine not working etc, alarm regularly sounding etc etc.
Unfortunately, unlike a lot of you, I have no experience of soldering, replacing electrical components etc and wouldnt trust myself to get it right!
Am I going to have to bite the bullet and call out an engineer? And if so, any recommendations?! I live near Glasgow in Scotland.
Thanks

Thank you Raceboy (Steve) for your kind and funny comments. 😀
Yes, Raceboy had all the usual capacitor failures on the front & rear modules.
After replacing all the caps with the ‘blue sort’; his ‘Ice Maker Infra Red On Indicator’ failed to flash when opening the freezer door.
The compressor cut in at the time of fitting the new caps but, had an underlying fault that showed itself the following morning.
Long story short; Relay 2 is responsible for turning on the ice maker. It ‘clicked’ as it turned on and off but the contacts were open circuit. Couldn’t be bothered to strip it down but assume it was like relay 3. Anyway, I replaced it.
Relay 3 for the compressor (Orange one) had been clicking so long; the contacts were burnt so I replaced it with a sturdy ‘Omron’ from RS.September 14, 2009 at 5:34 pm #142224daddykool

Well today I tackled my rear board with the new kit!
Changed large capacitor and clicking was quieter, but still there,so
removed board and replaced the other seven capacitors.
On power up I now have flashing display all the time,it’s been on for 1 hour so I will see what the next 24 hours bring “fingerscrossed”September 14, 2009 at 6:18 pm #142225daddykool

Incidently, my faults before attempt to repair were occasional flashing display, clicking ,splurging water dispenser and icemaker not working!

Hi Daddycool,
The Culprits / Perpetrators for most of your faults are indeed the caps you have just replaced. 😛
The Flashing Display?
Do all the L.E.D’s flash (Freezer & Fridge) or is it just the Freezer showing hyphens flashing? The latter is the freezer is not below 12 degrees which usually takes a couple of hours to come down.
I assume you know about the front caps?
Regards

Hi mate!
Flashing both displays, but only while icemaker is switched on.
icemaker is still not working, but otherwise all working OK.
will tackle front board next, but need to know what capacitors to replace and where to get them and which actual caps to buy.

Hi Daddycool,
The front panel turns on the ice maker relay on the rear board which is relay 2
If this does actually turn on and ‘click on’ (you can hear it) you should see the red illumination inside the freezer on the ‘Infra Red’ panel on right side of freezer.
One can’t actually see ‘Infra Red’ it’s out of the visible spectrum so the designers have been kind enough to stick a red l.e.d in there just for us humans.
C1, C2, C14 & C15 on the front pcb are all in parallel as previously described in this huge forum.
I personally recommend replacing all four with two 1uf caps.
These caps (again previously mentioned) do not fit onto the board but can be stuck to the rear cover of the front pcb and the legs extended with a suitable piece of extension wire.
It works a treat and will do for many many years. 22.8 If you use the following lol
RS 190-8450 x two
Hope this helps
Well actually it will 😀

Thanks for that have just noticed some ice is being made ,it takes about four button attempts to switch icemaking on ,and dispensing ice makes front display flash violently.
infrared beam lights for about 2 secs on opening door , so I will try to order the caps from RS if I can and go for front board upgrade.

You can actually use the bitbox ‘1uf’ caps if you have any left over, or use Farnell which is Free postage.

Have just opened account with RS so should be able to get them, I might add that I have never repaired a circuit board before, so if I can achieve this most people can , will keep you informed!
