    Hi 2twotoes,

There is a kit on this forum which will solve all your problems.
It’s on page 25 and put together by ‘kwatt’ look for the duck avatar πŸ™‚

I would recommend it for your list of faults.

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

Now I’m no expert but I do think the light issue may be linked to one of the other issues.
Mine has recently been repaired by Brodders, I’ve had every failure going until it gave up working completely.
It probalby took about 2 years from first ‘click’ issue to complete failure but knowing what I know now I’d fix it sooner rather than later. πŸ˜‰
A year or so ago my freezer light went ‘pop’ tried the one out the fridge and it didn’t work so I just left it, now the unit is repaired I tried swapping them over again and now it works.
I just need to get a new bulb now…..which leads to my question……
The bulds advertised for the ‘american’ whirlpool are Β£15 and 40w rated where as every other bulb with what looks like the same fitting but rated at 20w are about Β£2
Will the cheap bulb fit and ‘just be a bit dimmer’ or is it me being dimmer and there’s more to it than that?

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

I had this problem a couple of years ago, but until recently it seemed to have cleared after I’d taken the rear board out to examine it.

A couple of months ago it came back with an irritating vengeance – so I ordered and fitted the rear board mod from UK Whitegoods, which didn’t solve the clicking but should help it live a bit longer.

The clicking appears to be coming from a relay on the front board, so I’ve just ordered two 1uF capacitors from RS (Β£7.51) inc delivery – so will post with the outcome.

Many thanks to Brodders for the advice πŸ˜€

By the way, I’d be really grateful if you can tell me where I might source a replacement relay for this board – just in case the contacts are about burnt out πŸ˜‰

(Mine is an S20BRWW20A/G and the front board has 103-0234 stamped across it).

    Hi Wadey24,
I’ll look into the part number of the relay but I think it will be ok.

I’ve mentioned to ‘The Powers That Be’ that C2 on the rear board can cause problems.

    1000uf
    6.3 volt
    3.5mm lead spacing

When all the other caps are failing, this C2 little bugger can cause Havoc all by itself and destroy your compressor relay if left long enough.
It’s not the β€˜usual suspect’ but has been known to cause failures.

Your 1uf’s will cure your front board πŸ™‚

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

Okies, this is a work in progress that may well change over time as we learn more but, I hope, to keep it up date with as much information as we have.

Full instructions with pictures of the rear electronic control unit repair

Please do take note that, as stated, this is most definitely NOT a “cure all” for these machines, there are other components that can and do go faulty.

The repair kit is here and will likely be updated in the next few days with an additional capacitor, C2, that can go faulty. Many thanks to broddersbaldrick for sharing that gem. πŸ™‚

If you have already ordered a kit, still have a problem and want to try the C2 cap as well email me a copy of the order to kwatt@ukwhitegoods.co.uk and I will post you the additional cap FOC.

    Hope that helps.

    K.

Thanks Brodders. I’m only up the road (York), so if the clicking continues after the front board mod I might need to book your services & expertise!

    Will keep you posted…

Thanks also to Kwatt for the C2 update πŸ™‚

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

    Hi Wadey24,

The RS part number for the front relay is 369-517

It has a life span of 15’000’000 cycles; if yours has been clicking a few times each hour for the last few months; you have until you’re 150 years old to replace it (approx) πŸ˜†

I’d leave it, and if your ice stops dispensing, we can pop to daddycools place once he’s fitted the front caps. πŸ˜€

    Hi all,
I’ve just registered on the forum to add my gratitude and thanks to broddersbaldrick.
With John’s expert guidance I’ve managed to successfully replace the caps on both the back board and front board of my whirlpool S20B RSB21 American fridge freezer and it is now fully functioning again.
Heartfelt thanks for all your effort, and kindness …
    Joe.

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

    Hi there all
It has been quite some time since I first posted on this site regarding the Capacitor problem. It is good to know that others have been successful in stopping the clicking and spluttering faults too.
My fridge has been OK for over a year after changing the capacitors, but now I have a new problem with the compressor I think.
First sign was temp increasing and eventually alarm sounding.
After cleaning the fluff off the condensor coils and a full defrost, (there was a large qty of ice build up on the evaporator) all seemed OK for a few days.
Now I have noticed that the compressor is running continuously and getting quite hot. The freezer and fridge appear to be OK and at correct temps.
The compressor fan runs OK but switches off even though the compressor is still running. I thought it is supposed to run at all times the compressor is running?
The internal evaporator fan switches on and off as required but the compressor continues running.
Only way to stop the compressor is to switch off the mains switch.
After 8 minutes, it starts up again.
The standby switch also does not stop the compressor from running.
I am thinking that it could this be a sticking relay or has anyone got any ideas how to diagnose this fault ?

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

    Hi Ozzy1

The compressor relay is a ‘change over’ relay.
When it’s not running the compressor, the contacts ‘change over’ and supply the 220volt power for the ‘defrost relay’

The Defrost circuit will not and can’t work if the compressor is running.

If the contacts have stuck, your fridge will never be able to defrost.

The ‘standby’ powers up another relay to turn off the whole fridge freezer, which will kill the signal to the compressor relay but not the 220 volt.

It does sound very much like the orange relay is sticking, probably due to burnt and arcing contacts.

That relay is available for about Β£3 from Farnell 117-5017 and they have free shipping πŸ˜€

    Hope this helps
