Hi Rikmak>
Basically mine had most of the faults mentioned in previous posts.ie:chattering,ice-maker not functioning, water spluttering, and front LEDs flashing. With John’s guidance I changed C1, C5, C6, C7 & C8 caps on the back board and replaced C1, C2, C14 & C15 caps on the front board with 2 large 1uf caps stuck onto the inside cover and attached with fly leads.
I hadn’t used a soldering iron for almost 20 years but found the back board pretty easy to tackle-But I was at a complete loss as to go about fixing the front board until John kindly stepped in and talked me through it in great detail-After that I had the confidence to repair the front board in about 30 minutes.September 16, 2009 at 10:33 am #142248UKLAD

hello anybody…have one of those whirlpool fridge freezers with kind of same problems, flashing control panel, flashing warning light, alarm sound, temperature showing different numbers, then blank, water gizmo spluttering when used, ice crusher really slow and odd noise, although no actual loss of either temp in freezer of fridge as yet, to sort problem out wife just turns it on and off and a presto it works for a little more, totally random?, when doors are open door green warning light flickers and it starts all over again, have tried lowering freezer temp to -19 from -18 and this also can bring things back to normal for a while?…my model numbers are s20b rbb20-a/g
8586 152 15001 / 11 0412 000239 / sb540w? have read most threads on the matter , picked up that I have either an older model, need 2 boards? or a recent model ,only 1 board? also that problem may possibly be sorted with some small bits and soldering ?any update on this problem? and as i do not want to do it myself, who would do this for me for a price of course, not whirlpool prices and do you get a guarantee? what if that is not the problem etc after work done??????????September 16, 2009 at 11:50 am #142249Wadey24

Front board mod update: I got the two 1uF caps in the post this morning and wired them in series, then linked them to the board with two long wires replacing C1, C2, C14 & C15 as suggesteed.
Guess what – still clicking & flashing. D’oh π
I can turn the clicking off (which is coming from the front board relay) by hitting the ‘vacation’ button, although I don’t want to do this for prolonged periods. Temperature seems fine for now and it still makes ice.
Any ideas would be appreciated π
(Will also try the C2 mod on the back board when it arrives).
Cheers

Hi Brodders.
The Fire Brigade have just left, but the kitchen is salvageable π
Just kidding – wired them in parallel and the clicking has finally stopped.
Thank you so much for the help – you’ve saved me and many others a fortune by the sound of it. Really grateful mate.
Cheers

There is a kit on this forum which will solve all your problems.
It’s on page 25 and put together by ‘kwatt’ look for the duck avatar πI would recommend it for your list of faults.

Hi 2twotoes,
What’s your model number again?
Do you have an ice maker? The bulb problem is probably just the bulbs since both are not working or is it just one of the lights?
Like βraceboyβ you could eliminate the bulbs by swapping them over if one of them still works.

OK!!!
My front board caps arrived from RS today so I will attempt front board repair tomorrow.
Can anyone show me a pic of the front board and or a diagram as how to wire them in,I know they will replace the four coming out and I will have to stick them to the casing ,but not quite sure how to wire them with the flying leads!
I expect lots of you would like to see a sketch or something of this procedure.
I’m sure I read that the existing four caps are wired in series ,and from todays posts see that the new ones are to be wired in parrellel.
Perhaps if I offer Big brodder a pound of cream and nice pasty he could slip down to cornwall this evening and sort it.

I like it !!! π π π
Send me your e-mail and I’ll send you a pic.
The four that come out are all in Parallel too !! So we fit 2 bigger ones and wire them in parallel to achieve the same value as the four that come out. Simples π

Tested Orange Relay on the back board and found that the contacts had fused together, probably from all the years of clicking !
Replaced it and immediately, the defrost cycle began.
About 15 minutes later, the compressor started up with the condensor fan and all looks good.
Many thanks Brodders ! You helped confirm my suspicions about this relay and got me thinking that there may be other people out there with this problem and havent realised that the compressor is running continuously.
Because it is very quiet, people may assume that when the fans stop, that the compressor has stopped which is not the case in this situation.
Maybe a secondary fault to look out for ?
Anyway my fridge and I are happy now and I hope that someone else can benefit from this info too.
No thanks to Whirlpool, unfortunately, they have lost my confidence in their products after this unecessary saga.
Cheers to all.September 17, 2009 at 8:32 am #142259daddykool

Cold air not getting from Freezer to Fridge.
In these S by Ss the fridge is cooled by air blown in from the freezer. This is the job of the evaporator fan, usually located half way up the back of the freezer behind a panel. Mine works fine. But then I discovered a thingy at the top left of the fridge which seems to be an electrically operated gate used to control the cold air entering the fridge. I don’t know what it’s called but I jammed it open and at least the fridge now works (it’s summer; I probably can’t leave it like that for the winter.) My problem is, is this gate broken, is the temperature sensor broken, or is the fault in the control board that controls everything? Does anyone have any ideas? Nothing is iced up so that’s not the problem. -
