    Hi brysat,

Do you mean this part, the motorised baffle? Is so that controls the flow of cold air, drawn from the freezer compartment, into the fridge compartment.

If you’ve jammed that open I’d be surprised if the fridge temperature wasn’t way off what it should be. You’ll also likely have extended run times that are costing you electricity as well as straining the compressor due to the extended run times.

Posted this on a new thread by mistake doh!.

Recently had the flashing front panel problem, everything else working fine ice water etc. I spoke with broddersbaldrick, followed his detailed instructions replacing capacitors on front board, hey Presto, more amazing than Derren Brown on lottery night no more flashing panel.

Big up to broddersbaldrick he has saved me a small fortune and by the look of this forum he has helped plenty others.. Top Man..

Just wanted to thank John (Brodders) who drove all the way up to Glasgow yesterday (and back again) to fix my machine. He is clearly off his head but am very grateful that he was willing to come and help me out!

Happy to report today that the clicking has stopped, there have been no alarms, and even the ice maker works again. As someone who is not technically-minded in the slightest I wouldnt have know where to start so am glad to have someone who knew what they were doing. Would definitely recommend him if anyone is looking for someone to do a bit of work.

    Happy days 8)

    Brodders,

I have the exact same problem with my whirlpool.

    Model number: S20BRSS31-A/G
    Serial: 858615115011 / 110412022958

I’ve replaced the back pcb, but still get the flashing and ice maker not working, so I presume its the front pcb.

Would you mind posting me details of the 1uf caps I might need and the picture you sent daddy cool about how to fix this.

    Much appreciated!

Hi Board Bloke, is that a printed circuit or Surf 🙂

I need your e-mail to send some pics. Send a p-m

The cap details are in this forum towards the last few pages.
RS order line close at 8pm so you should have them by the morning.

You mentioned replacing the rear board, was that a new one or simply the caps?

    Regards

    Brodders

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

Hi everyone have been visiting this forum alot over the last few weeks as my whirlpool american fridge freezer developed the dreaded clicking, flashing and temperature problems, followed all the instructions and thought i had cracked it, changed the caps front and back and away it went no clicking no flashing ice and water all working perfectl, A couple of days later came down in the morning to find it had lost temperature so took out rear pcb to descover relay 3 was shot, replaced it with a new one but now it will not even get to temperature. Took out the panels at the back of the freezer and only the very bottom of the evaperator has frost on it the compresssor and fan are running, i have hooverd out the condensor but still no joy, have been speaking to John brodders and he says that the refridgerent must be low? Has anyone else had this problem? I dont really want to spend any more money on it and the leak could be anywhere anybobdy got any ideas? if not anyone whant a fridge freezer spares or repair? 😥

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

Hello everyone, I have some issues with our Whirlpool S20DRSS10 with the alarm constantly on and the freezer temperature not being held.

It’s affecting the fridge too so I wondered if I could replace the rear PCB as advertised on this site (I’m not great at soldering). The problem is my model number isn’t listed underneath the part, so I don’t know if it will fit.

It’s a non ice maker model if that helps.

    Thanks 🙂

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

    Hi all,
I posted very early on in this thread, one of the first pages, as my Whirlpool was acting up in 2005, we’d bought it 2004. I changed out a couple of caps on the rear board and sorted the problem. Just over the last couple of days I have heard and seen the dreaded clicking again! I’ve ordered the ‘fix’ off here and I still have some spare caps from when I bought a slack handful from RS whhen I first repaired it.

I just wanted to say if anyone is having problems with one of these in the N.Lincolnshire, East yorkshire area, i’m quite happy to come and help look at the boards for the cost of travelling fuel only. I have the required tools etc but probably not all the caps required. I am away till 5th October though.
Also, I do work full time so might not be able to get there within an hour or two!
    😆
    PM me if required.

    Cheers,
    Mike

Hi, had similar problems to many on this site, with our Whirlpool American fridge freezer which is only a couple of years old….

    (Ser: 8586 402 15000 11 0640 012549)

We had the front board replaced under warranty after about 6 months as the front panel kept going blank and – – appearing every now and again… over the last few months we’ve had spurting water and for the last couple of weeks things in some areas of the fridge have been getting frozen and the temp being lower than it should everywhere (fine for beers, not so good for food)… Had I been a single bloke, no prob’s, but not so good for the family!!!

Obtained the kit and replaced the components on the rear board and the spurting water problem has now been resolved, which is brill…. problem with the fridge temp has not changed though. I’ve cleaned out behind front grille and rear cover, got rid of dust etc. but not sure what steps to take next as problem remains…. When I switch on power after a couple of mins I get the alarm and a ‘d’ showing on the fridge display, but this goes off after about 5 minutes. Having read the comments on this forum I was thinking that it might be a relay, but which one? or the motorised baffle thing, which I’m not sure I can easily get at? or is it likely to be something else…. could do with some detailed advice plse…. and being pointed in the direction of more parts if I need them…

    Thanks… Nige

d is the motorised baffle – either frozen up still or damaged by trying to operate while frozen ( it is in the top of the fridga cavity in the left hand corner )
power off before attempting any panel removal

    Thanks Chezza….

I’ve taken a quick look and can easily remove the outside plastic cover and polystyrene cover underneath this. There was a little bit of ice on the outside of the plastic cover, but no idea whether the inside of this unit is frozen. The unit is in the top LHS of the fridge and looks like a round blue component clipped? onto a further plastic and polystyrene base fitted onto the side-wall of the fridge, but there is no obvious or easy way to remove any of these, so other than allow to defrost a bit I’ve no idea how I can check to see if the baffle is damaged. Will let you know how I get on, but if no joy further advice or instructions would be really helpful.

    Thanks…. Nige

    Posted too soon…… doh!!

The baffle unclips from the freezer side – should have realised…. I’ve taken a look and no sign of ice or anything being frozen up – baffles seemed to slide freely with gentle pressure from a small screwdriver – does this mean the linkage has broken to the motor? Anyway, assembled again and on starting up ‘d’ flashing away….. Is this something that could be repairable or is it a new unit that’s needed….?

    Thanks…. Nige

Hi all, I’ve been reading this thread for the last week to try and fix my Whirlpool side by side – S20B RSB21-A/G and have to give in and post to request help! Code is 8586 151 15000.

It started clicking last year but as it seemed to be related to the water and we didn’t have it plumbed in, it wasn’t too much of a problem. It was just the 20 seconds of clicking a few times a day, which I thought was the valve related to water dispenser but has turned out to be the relay. I did briefly get it plumbed in to try and check it and the water worked, but spurted.

Last week I found it to be losing its cool, i.e raising temperature. The freezer display flashed — with the warning triangle. The fridge display said 3 still, but was no longer cold.

First of all, I took the freezer contents out and removed the inside back to check for ice. There was none, and after turning off over night the bottom of the freezer was only a little bit wet, so I don’t think there was much ice build up.

After much searching I found this thread, and took the rear board to a local TV repair to ask him to test and swap C5 and C7. They apparently tested as good, but when I replaced the rear board there was no change.

I ordered the set of 3x 0.1uF, 4x 0.22uF and 1x 1uF from RS and over the weekend I have fitted them. They are the model numbers recommended earlier in this thread (190-8551, 8539 and 8450). The big 1uF fits perfectly, the others are too wide so at first I just replaced the 1uF and C5 and C7 of the 0.22uF capacitors.

I plugged the board back in and immediately I could tell the repair had worked. In addition to the ever present sound of the small fan inside the freezer there was another “fridge buzz” that I assume was the compressor. Testing the ice maker and water shows no sign of clicking and both working. The temperature started to drop and altho the freezer display showed — at first, over a couple of hours it chilled and the vodka went frosty, the display it showed -19 and acted normally.

I kept checking it for a few hours and was disappointed to find after only about 3 hours the freezer (and therefore fridge) were warming up again and I could not hear the compressor! How could it work and then stop? I’m pretty sure the new caps were of the correct rating, but is there any way something has happened with them that has let through too much or not enough voltage and blown something further down the line? The water dispenser and ice maker are still operating, that is they buzz when pressed, but as I have no water connected there is no ice or water. However I assume this means the caps in C5 and C7 are working, and I assume also the relay is working – or could it have seized up to allow the water dispenser to work but prevent the compressor? (I think thats the point of the relay in question isn’t it? If I’ve read this thread right….)

This morning I removed the board again and replaced the other 0.22uF and the 3x 0.1uF capacitors by putting them on the back of the board. Plugged in and no change. Water and ice seem fine, but no compressor noise and no cooling.

Whats next!? I looked at the front board and none of the caps or relays look physically faulty, but as I’m not too skilled in soldering, it looks a bit more daunting than the rear board! Do my symptoms indicate further replacement parts are needed?

    Please help experts! 🙂

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

Just a further update to my story… After posting I took the rear board out again, tidied up some of the soldering and double checked all joins. I swapped over C5 and C7 just incase the new ones had faults and put back in.

It seemed no different but I left I turned on a while to test it, then suddenly after 10 minutes the compressor buzzed into life and started cooling it. I’ve left it a couple of hours and it got really cold. So I turned it off just for a moment to put the back plate back on and pushed it into position. Turned back on and no sound at all, no compressor, no rear panel fan, no freezer fan. Waited a bit and the little freezer fan came on, but nothing else yet.

What does this imply? The capacitors and relays seem ok because it keeps working intermittenly. Whilst it was working I noticed it being pretty warm down the back-bottom, although I think that is the whole point of a fridge isn’t it?

As I write, the big fan at the back has turned
on, but still no compressor buzz. Am I being impatient? Is it normal for a working fridge to sit there quietly sometimes without the compressor running? How long is too long? What is the firing order? Does the compressor stay off if the rear fan is on cooling the “pot” or whatever you cool the thing with the coolant in?

I have noticed the rear board relays making the ocassional click. Obviously this is normal when using standby button, and it’s not doing the old repetetive chattering, but it ocassionally does a quick machine gun noise click-click-click-click-click very short but fast.
