Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

Hello forum, hope you can help…

My fridge (FRSB36AF20/2) is not getting cold enough, but the freezer and everything else like the ice and water are working fine. I get no error messages. Does it sound like something is iced up or a baffle problem maybe? Any ideas?

    12 digit service code is: 8586 158 15041

Thanks in advance for your time.

    Hi Folks,

I’ve got a 20RB-D1L (model SB540W) thats behaving in many ways like descriptions on this thread. The front panel has bouts of flashing random lights, temperature is not staying as set and the fridge side is freezing things (one lump of milk or two in your coffee??)

Could this be the same problem as others are experiencing? I’ve got the front panel off and the board from the back. All the caps look okay (no bulging or leaks) – is it worth replacing them anyway?

The main board is an AL130-00151-4 Whirlpool board.

No idea of age – the previous owners of our house left it (presumably because of this problem). Probably under 3 years though.

    Cheers,
    Rick

I have a problem with the freezer side, it is an S25 RSS31 I believe.
The fridge seems normal temperature, but the freezer is around 1 or 2 degrees and the front panel warning is going off.
Last night I vacuumed in the grill at the front as Ive never had it off in 4 years and it was full of cack.
this morning still no change, so i removed the plate at the back and the fan is running and the black metal pot shaped thing (is that the condenser?) is quite hot, not sure how hot but i can put my hand on and hold it there for about 10 seconds before it is unbearable.

I know which end of a screwdriver to use and build computer etc, so I’m hoping with a little sound advice I might be able to fix it myself.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

I defrosted my fridge 3 weeks ago as a temporary fix, I’ve not taken the back of the freezer off again to check, but I think its frozen up again and the fridge is at 10c.

This fridge also clicks for 10-20 seconds sometimes, when i use the ice maker the lights flash on the door, but not when i use the water.

    My model is
    S25B RSS31-A/G
    8586 166 15010
    11032701979
I bought it in March 2006

I’ve looked at the parts section, I’m unsure if i need rear only or both boards.
I’ve found the rear board here http://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/Refrigeration+Parts/Whirlpool/Whirlpool+Control+Modules/481221778213+Whirlpool+American+Fridge+Freezer+Electronic+PCB.html

Any advice appreciated, also how hard is the board to replace? Is it just plug and pray? I used to build computers for a living and I’d imagine its not as complex at that.

    Thanks
    Ben

Edit: just took the thermometer out of the freezer and its at -18, but the fridge is at 10

Noone replied so I went ahead and bought that rear board, once plugged in the fridge “looks normal” in that the front panel reads correct. ie. not CF

I think it may be running the defrost cycle right away though, i see water dripping in the collection tray, so i removed the bottom panel in the back of the freezer and i feel an electrically generated heat. So either its defrosting or about to burst into flames.

The compressor and fan are not running at the moment, does anyone know how long the defrost cycle should last?

Compressor has kicked in after 40 mins, phew, now to monitor the temp

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

    Hello,

Over the past few days I have read this entire forum and feel reluctant to give Whirlpool and of my money to fix their problem.

I have the same problems as everyone else with the flashing lines on the freezer temperature and ice maker producing no ice. The fridge and freezer temperature is also dropping.

I have ordered the help kit from UK white goods however stupid me didnt realise you would have to use a soldering iron! Therefore I have decided to buy a new board, however from the picture in the help kit my board is totally different. I think these are the codes for the fridge but am not certain:

    858642015000 and 110742004136.

If any one can give me any advice on what board i need to use it would be greatly appreciated. And also whether i need to replace both boards or just the rear.

    Thanks Chris

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

Just a quick update, i’ve contacted whirlpool and have been quoted £166 for the rear board and £211 for the front. Also, apparently this is not a known fault despite the hundreds of people on these forums, interesting!

Would really appreciate help on which one of these boards to get or both.

Hi could anyone help with this fault, the Whirlpool fridge freezer constantly runs and freezer alarm goes off. After re-setting same thing happens again.
At the moment the ice cubes seem ok and temp in freezer appears constant.

I think the model number is S220DDSS23A/G

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

If anyone is still having trouble with there F/f my advice would be to solder the back board yourself either buy the kit from on here or from Brodders once done then send the front board to Brodders for repair the F/F WILL work fine without the front panel being attached you will only be with out the front panel for around 48 hours anyway.

Re: Whirlpool American Fridge Freezer broken down – help!

not sure if anyone can help. I have a whirlpool American FF and this week the ice maker has decided to do some strange things.

essentially, the ice tray turns but only 1/4 way and then returns to home. The arm which drops to check if the ice box is full or not does do it’s thing but i suspect somewhere in the brains the message is being sent back that it is full.

i have remove some ice and it still fills up etc to replenish ice- but it just doesn’t want to spin all the way round so it drop out.

Anyone any ideas on this or previous experience?

Any ideas as to what is wrong? Have tried switching on and off (it was the best I could think!) but to no avail.

If anyone has ideas I would be very grateful! Can’t believe I purchased such a complicated fridge freezer!

    Thanks in advance 😕

For a house in France I bought a similar product also Whirlpool less than 2 years ago it is a S20E and has sufferred the problems outlined by others on this site.

Shouldn’t we 176 respondents on this site alone be considering a ‘class action’ against Whirlpool?

    Let me know.

Hi, have found this site so impressive only would of been more useful pre purchase of the same unit as others, so many others do not know of this and will keep paying out, I too consider a class action a recall of these items are needed. medication is needed to be kept at a certain tempreture plus food loss, plus call out and engerneer’s money.

Class action doesn’t exist in UK law, I believe. It is an American procedure.

Happy to stand corrected by someone with more time than I have to check it out and cite accordingly but a quick search reveals that the UK has had “group litigation” since 2000.
