The British Chamber of Commerce issued a press release this morning as follows:
Despite the encouraging results, the BCC warns that underlying weaknesses in the economy remain, which cannot be ignored if we are to avoid a relapse into recession. The business group highlights sluggish growth in the service sector as a serious concern, and more specifically, a huge number of manufacturers (around 80{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}) are now reporting that the cost of raw materials is increasing, adding to price pressures.
As we operate in the service sector that us ! Coupled with the fact that one of my bank business managers is also a customer of mine, she was in yesterday and I started a conversation about how she in her position was finding that businesses were coping. Her account flew in the face of what I understand and know and she was painting a very positive picture of how she and her business team had started over 130 new businesses this year, she also thought that many businesses were doing very well !
She seemed to be amazed but unconcerned that we were finding it tough going just now and that picture is common across the board with other business owners that I know well from a cross section of the business community. Rose Tinted Glasses she may have had on but as usual I find that most of these so called Business Teams who I have very little to do with have actually never ran a business and whatever their training they are more focused on trying to sell their own business products as opposed to really helping anyone.

Work here in the Plymouth area is quiet, theres sporadic amounts of calls, im finding more debt problems and bouncing cheques, least today i have managed to sort a mobile card machine, i do feel more and more that the whitegoods trade is going down the same road as what happened to the browngoods. Lets hope im wrong and that things in the next year will improve.

Well the Mechanic from the garage where we get our vans serviced called in for some motor carbons for his own machine first thing this morning, we got talking about trade and customers and he is just the same as the rest of us, low work throughput, customers calling for prices, can you give us a free estimate, this is not unique to our trade but its real easy to sit there thinking that it is and the trade is dying. Our phone rang more today and we had a days work as a result, tomorrow no work book as yet, Friday no work book as yet, Shop is seeing more customers buying spare parts for DIY.
People are booking holidays and most people I know are taking off to foreign lands for there summer breaks. They reckon sales of new vehicles are up with fleet purchases up 15 {e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}. I think that there is money in the public economy and the media banging on night after night makes folks want to be more savvy with the way there spending what ever they do have.
We all need to put our heads together and think of ways of how to make more of what we have, so if any of you have any bright ideas of how to attract more custom, involve your customers more in what you have to offer then lets hear it !!!!

Never known it so slow for me for so long. Been quite since begining of May and is just getting quiter and quiter.
June notably a quite month and expected it to get a bit better but still bad.
Last week if you put all my calls together did a 2day week – nearly as bad as when they shut Rover down here – my work went down to 1.5 day a week then for nearly 2 months.
I suspect it is due to all the unexpectancy in the air, same as last year – quite 3 months then. Coupled with the looming VAT increase people thinking more about saving money – if they anything like a customer I went to the other day she thought that by buying a new m/c before Jan she would be saving loads of money – I pointed out that it was only going up 2.5{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} which is £2.50 for every £100 spent amd on a m/c cost of £300 all she would be saving is £7.50 – Think she thought it was going to save £20 every £100 if she bought before the increase. VAT going up by 20{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} :rolls:
Does amaze me how penny pinching the public are though – When the goverment put 1p on the price of petrol the other month there was ques outside the petrol stations by me filling up before it went on – working it out the average car has a 40-50 lt capacity – most of those cars were proberbly half full so that means if they filled them up on average they would be saving 20p – Would you sit in a que for 10 mins to save 20p! If most of them had worked it out Im sure they wouldnt have either – its just they get brain washed or have lost the ability to reason methinks
Think its a brain washed public we are having to deal with 😥
But it can only get better – as they say (hopefully)

Think you’re right Mick, thought last year was quiet but this is becoming bloody ridiculous 😯 Ive done three jobs this week so far..nothing booked for wed 🙁
The present government is definitely putting the frightners on the general populus, and retailers are responding to this by dropping prices..we’re caught in the middle unfortunately.
Think i might go abroad & do some voluntary work or something.. come back in 2012.. getting bored of cutting the grass :rolls:

I dont think luck comes into it 😉 you make your own luck in this world. I think it’s just a case of wait and see, luckly I have enough put aside in the business to ride the storm, saying that although work is down I stilll manage to cover costs.
I think it’s down to the uncertenty of what the economy and government make of it, we just need public confidence. What puzzles me is that new car sales were up last month 😕 , there must still be money around it’s just the typical punter being penny wise pound stupid, IMO.
I look forward to hearing that everyone’s business starts to pick up again 😉
