he sent it out but it never arrived, the royal mail doing their usual bungling. odom has refunded the money, just waiting for it to show on the statement.

Pretty sure that motor runs on 240v, not stepped down. Might be a label on it somewhere (may have dropped off) to say so. The black dust may come from the little belt that it uses to drive the fan (unless they’ve changed the design).

hi mate
i reckon your right , the belt did have a fair bit of the black dust on it.March 12, 2011 at 9:30 am #341487stryder

hi mike
connected it up to 240v supply and guess what-the motor works!
so i don`t need a new one . i put a bit of load on it and still no probs . the metal casing gets a bit hot but i supposed thats what the fan blades underneath are for.
if it still runs intermittently when i put it back on the machine it must be something else causing the problem. i`ve checked the wiring and cleand all connections. i hope its not a fault on the board :eeek:March 12, 2011 at 10:59 am #341488Martin

I doubt it TBH, more likely the phosphor-bronze bearings seize up through lack of lubrication or the air gap between rotor and coil uneven due to excess bearing wear. But I’m sure you must have squirted liberal doses of 3 in 1 oil into the bearings anyway, have you?

hi martin
i put a bit of bearing grease in them but to tell you the truth they seemed fine before i did. they spin really smoothly without any play. i did find some crap stuck to the stator(not sure if thats what you call it in an induction motor) so i cleaned it up with some servisol. its been running constsantly now for about 1 and a half hours with no problems. i wish i could find out what the restistance should be across the terminals.also it doesen`t appear to have any kind of thermal cut out as someone suggested.March 12, 2011 at 12:51 pm #341490stryder

is it normal for the metal casing to get fairly hot after its been running for a while . if someone out there has a new one is there any chance they could give it a quick check with a multimeter and tell me what the resistance is across the two spade connectors? then maybe i can get a decent nights sleep and stop thinking about the bloody thing 🙂

Do you mean the dryer motor has stopped spinning or the drum?
As regards the dryer motor, don’t worry about resistance of coil. It would be very unusual if that was “wrong” without definite signs of burning! Also, it would need to have had a fair bit of use before the bearings in it would wear. Your problem is most likely elsewhere. Clogged condenser perhaps or just possibly iffy connection somewhere. Check especially connections to all thermostats / thermistors. There’s probably one in the condenser to sump hose you might not know about. Anyway, you’ve got a washing machine at least, haven’t you?
