    Re: meggers

I simply cannot believe some of what I’ve read in this thread.

I’m getting vibes that if there is an earth fault, rather than use a megger to identify the fault, keep disconnecting components & whacking in fuses using a process of elimination. That alone is unreal!

Put it this way, without a megger, despite the fault you are called to attend, you have no idea if there is an earth leakage. Therefore you have no idea if there is a potential DEATH risk to yourself or your customer.

You can clear a pump, fit a door seal, unblock a soap dispenser or whatever that does not involve an electrical fault; but you have a duty of care to yourself, your customer or indeed your employee. Without a simple check you have no idea what is lurking.

You can meet an appliance that has an inherent earth leakage, and enough to kill anyone who happens to be the conductor between that machine and a good earth, and you were the last one there. You or your company left paperwork, or a line on the victim’s bank statement to say who was paid on the last day someone looked at that product.

You can be complacent and say, “But I had no need to take an insulation resistance test, as there was no electrical fault”. However did you check the earth path itself, meaning is that appliance actually earthed properly? Dare I suggest someone who breezes in and facilitates a repair without a megger won’t be doing an earth loop test either?

The thought of some of what has been added in this thread to date horrifies me, and the poor old punter has no idea why some repairers seem to be too bloody cheap!

I’m going to be blunt here; I hope some of what has been posted to date on this subject is NOT indicative of the members of UKW as a whole.

Blimey Richard. I note your name is c1983, so is that machine.

Bearings and motor armature may be the only things to worry about. Crouzet Timers on those were bomb proof, pumps etc universal, but if the module fails may hard to come by.

Similar to Jonah, and I pay £40. Recalls are managed by the sub-contractor.

Re: Port Meirion…anyone ever been ?

No need to stay in the village. It is very expensive to stay, and there is nothing to do in the evening outside your hotel.

There are 2 hotels, 1 up at the top (Castell Deudraeth), and another down by the estuary, simply called The Hotel. Hell of expensive even for a meal. If you want to stay somewhere best pick something like Caernarfon, then the village is only 25 mins away.

The village is pretty magical, especially if like me you watched “The Prisoner” back in the 60’s. I did feel “the pull of the earth” as it where but then I’m a bit like that; I tend to absorb things just by watching. When I went there was a wedding happening on the main green, and that completed the scene. However you only need 2 hours there, and that is it.

I went a month ago and arrived just after 3 and it was half price, by 4.30 nearly everyone had gone and we had it to ourselves. Took hundreds of photos, and spent 20 mins in the audio visual display. There are 2 gift shops that tend to keep Prisoner memorabilia, but again, not cheap. It has its own micro-climate and now the trees have got more colours will be a feast on the eyes. The beach is mind blowing.

If you stay in Caernarfon there are a few bars and restaurants, even a gastro pub by the quayside Premier Travel Inn that overlooks the harbour where you can have a cheap meal & see the sunset. It is worth taking the Welsh Highland Railway from Caernarfon, it isn’t 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} completed yet but you get 2 hours in some splendid countryside, and go all the way to the end & back again. It is worth paying extra for the Pullman 1st class carriage.

If you can, take the main road A55 from Caernarfon to Conwy, bit like some of the Italian coastal roads. If you go to Conwy, have a light lunch in the Printing Press bistro by the upper castle entrance. Fantastic! If National Trust gardens appeals try Bodnant Garden just along the A470 towards Betws Y Coed, a very good day half day out.

If you like driving, and can see through the mist & rain, take the Llanberis pass, and if you get chance drive in a loop round to Beddgelert, nice village with a couple of decent pubs, as long as you can park.

Don’t forget your waterproofs and an umbrella, you will need them

Agreed, but they did recently divorce. Volvo is a posh Ford come to that. At least not a Jag, posh Tata.

Ah but if it is a Volvo it needs opening side windows so the driver can do a hand signal.

Says he who has just bought a SAAB.

    Simples…

If made after 1990 will have a dedicated Multi-Plug. If before, 3 leads and they will be marked to correspond with the letters on the old black door lock.

Think the reflective screen is very likely. Surely the dealer can answer that? I’ve been looking at the Seat Exeo, and I’m put off by the very fact it has a reflective screen.

Re: Cowboys still riding the range

I think those of you that have a handy machine in the back depends on how you sell, for what purpose it is there and how often you pitch that line.

The lot I’m talking about do seem to have a lot of instances where it is lucky that there is a machine that is destined for another customer later in the day. We have heard it said many times of this company, and to me it looks like “let’s get another machine in there before hubby comes home”

All I’m saying is it looks dodgy, and fits the brief of the company concerned who have an extremely high write off rate.

I bet I have, I think they did have red vans at one stage, but now you say it, there are blue ones out there. They need room in the back in case a customer wants to buy the machine they are toting around ready to deliver on another call already arranged for later in the day.

I guess Somerset trading standards may know of them.

Somone did put in the trade forums that Knowles is not part of this.

I bumped into Ibbotson and he handed me a card, saying he can put some work my way. I shan’t be phoning him, as that is not how I do things, but I’m interested to know if Kosher. I seem to recall he has a bit of a reputation, but it may be historical.

Anyone know what they pay? Assume old MFI work? Had a phone call once from Malcolm Knowles just after MFI went, never heard any more, and I assume he is part of it?
