And it’s not just the financial side that’s making it harder, not sure what it’s like where you are but around Exeter the travel time has extended considerably, traffic levels seem to be at an all time high, customers seems to be more demanding than they where 10/15 years ago so the whole package is what’s making it more chalenging

Again you are assuming every call I go to is chargeable. I won’t charge twice if I need to go back to fit spares. I’ve not said I don’t make a living

First of all that would be turnover not a wage also you’re assuming 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} first time completion which for an independent is almost impossible. Trying to keep a decent van stock is imperative but there are a lot of second visits to fit spares. I don’t work weekends and haven’t for a few years.

The threshold is £81k. So it’s not hard to stay under and still make a living. I could quite easily take on more work by selling and taking someone on but like I’ve said before so long as it pays the bills I don’t have a problem. Work to live never live to work

Here’s my take on it for someone that does live in the area. During what I would call busy times I’d expect to be doing 9/10 calls every day. At the moment I’m probably doing an average of 6/7 a day. Recently for the first time in 4 years I increased my prices and have not had one complaint but even with the increase it’s still hard to make a good living out of it. Main problem for me is when people expect you not to charge if you can’t repair their appliance and that scenario seems to happen more and more. I’ve been down the route of selling appliances which only affect was to put me over the threshold and have to register for vat, hence the reason I’m no longer interested in sales,taking on extra help etc

Don’t know if this helps but I fitted a belt yesterday, once all the back screws are removed the drum comes out dead easy. Should be able to get at it fairly easily then
