Seriously though – I knew it could,nt really be a Bosch as Ken said something about spares being “reasonably priced”……….

Yes, we have partners in this venture. The manufacturer and importer have invested heavily into our project,

And we have Repairs@ for which some of the more prolific members still haven’t filled out a form for to get FREE work, is that because you’re too lazy or do you just not want any more business?
K.
To be honest the reason why I have never commited to Repairs@ is simply because of the 12 month warranty requirement. I have no objection to a labour warranty of this length as the onus is upon me to do a good job (which I would endevour to do anyway). But I have not yet talked myself into accepting the liability for spare parts that in most cases are only warrantied by the supplier for six months (if your are lucky).
Maybe I am just being foolish but I have to admit that I can’t yet find in my heart a willingness to accept the responsabilty for a manufacturers lack of confidence in the quality of his own goods. This is’nt purely financial either, it is the principal involved.
Ok I am probably being stupid and should grit my teeth, raise my prices to cover the risk and join up but I would like to know if there are any others who feel this way.

PS – forget the “the problem is elsewhere on the board” bit as I think these regulators are s/c protected so any s/c across its output should not draw excessive current from the other power supply componants ??
ie. the problem is in the supply itself.

lmtgowi – Hows about posting with your name?
Your best bet with this is to start from the output of the power supply and work backwards / forwards. If your transformer output is low and getting hot then it is probably another componant that is dragging the voltage down, Usually a s/c componant that sits across the supply rail.
If you can, isolate the power supply itself first and see if you are getting 5v out. If you are then the problem is elsewhere on the board.
If the problem is on the supply check electrolytic smoothing capacitors and the regulator itself
have lots of fun

Phidom wrote:for years I’ve used pattern Bosch carbons soldered into Indesco holders on Merloni machines. I’ve never changed such brushes twice on the same machine. The ones I use for this are those with a plain wire and no tag or spring.
Me too. I use the 43mm carbons and leave them flat on the end. Before I fit them I file the angle to suit. I made a little jig from an old holder that fits over the carbon and gets the length and angle spot on, takes 2 mins. The only ones that these do not fit are the slightly wider carbons in the bronze holder.
A set of these in the silver type holders fits lots of different machines and costs about £2. I have never had any problems using these apart from they last too long!! I can solder up 5 pairs of these into the holders in about 20 mins.
I used to believe that there was quite a difference between carbon brush compositions but over the years I have come to the conclusion that it does not seem to matter too much. But I may be wrong!

Sound like an o/c tacho circuit. If the ‘agitate’ is above normal wash speed (customer may have ommited this).
I would take a tacho coil with me as they do tend to fail on these motors for some reason.

I found that in the parts listing and thought it probably was the one. But I could not find it on the exploded diagram as it does not seem to relate to the actual machine. So it would have been guesswork – not good at £30 a guess! 🙁
Anyway thanks again for helping out.

Hi Craig
Are you saying that the HPT model is a Brandt and they are the same?

ParticipantRe: Welcome To A New Way Forward
Since I learned about project x i have been bouncing the idea of my customers to see if they would consider buying an ‘x’ and I have been amazed at the very favourable response.
Just to give you an idea. I was attending to a fridge freezer at a regular customers today and she mentioned that she was despatching the old Hoover logic to the bone yard and replacing it with a new Hotpoint. I explained to her the Hotpoint / Merloni situation and we had a chat. As i was leaving i mentioned about the new ‘engineer specified washer’ and the commitment to quality and fast service.
This lady was all for ringing up and cancelling the Hotpoint on the spot until I explained that they were not available until the new year. Obviously disapointed she said ‘do you think my Hoover will last until then’?
Nearly all my customers – as yours probably do – ask me to recomend a brand name if they have to eventually replace, so they obviously trust my / our judgement. Apart from cost issues this almost guarantees a sale of an ‘x’ if one can be supplied quickly.
Give your customers a try and see how they respond.

Cheers Ken
George has already Pm’d me about the Carlisle session but it is a bit far as it is on a Tuesday and would depend on the workload as i have no backup.
If you have a session maybe in the Lancaster area sometime that would be great. I don’t know whether there is anybody on UKWG from there but there will be plenty of engineers in the area no doubt.
A big thanks anyway. I for one, really appreciate all that you guys do that organise UKWG
