That’s why I specifically said I wouldn’t try to tell people not to buy them, if they are happy that it’s a fair price to pay for cheap machines then that’s up to them. But to find out if they care or not they need to at least know.

Most of them are naive and just keep accepting lower and lower prices without questioning how it’s achieved. The current situation is that there are only a few sealed tubs, it’s not a foregone conclusion that all washing machines will go the same way. It’s one of the things the ISE is fighting and if people can see the ISE can be stripped down and bearings knocked out for x amount but a similarly priced washing machine would have to be scrapped they may vote with their feet.

[edited once to remove an errant apostrophe and the second time to add this explanation as it looks a bit dodgy once someone’s replied]

    Re: Sealed Tubs

I would love to display a warning on my site about all the washing machines with sealed tubs. If people stopped buying them they’d stop making them. I wouldn’t say don’t buy one, but I think people should at least know the potential consequenses and make an informed decision.

That’s a very good point. The manufacturers don’t get criticised for extortionate prices. It’s different for them – they aren’t ripping people off – they are just making big profits.

It’s a shame. I liked the idea, and I like the idea of a British man going it alone against the odds and coming good.

Oh dear. A more appropriate comment might be that you didn’t realise I was that young. I just realised it was 30 years ago (1977).

I remember that from a training course nearly 20 years ago. I don’t remember anything else though.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head there. To be honest I’m amazed anyone still does “recons”, and if you can’t get more than £80 – £100 for them I understand why you’d be reluctant to guarantee them for long. At £80 I’d feel bitter enough to only want to give ’em 1 month.

I stopped over 10 years ago when I used to sell them for £199 and as high as £250 with 12 month guarantees. But at that time they were still a lot cheaper than a new one and I did fit a hell of a lot of parts to them including a new control panel, door trim, armature, door seal, drain hose and anything else required on each one. Those days are gone for ever.

At the end of the day they aren’t a viable thing to sell any more unless you can recon a quality machine. At least then you can sell them on the premise that they may be close to the price of a new one but are much better quality and could or even should last just as long.

Re: Miele W4144WPS vs ISE Machine

All Miele washing machines have stainless tubs in the UK.

The new ISE looks good. To me it bridges the gap between the best of the rest and Miele but is not quite on par with a Miele. Nothing is because Miele are obsessed with being the best. The servicing and spares though are definitely likely to be cheaper and more easily available than a Miele and that’s where the edge is. Technical support and even diy repairs will also be much easier than a Miele because the ethos of ISE is to embrace the independent repair trade and really help them with tech support and spares. To me if the price of the new ISE was a few hundred pounds cheaper than a Miele it could be a very viable alternative but if it’s the same price or even higher then it’s a fight between a better built Miele with more expensive spares and repairs and the ISE (which could be argued is as well built as most people need) with easier repairs and spares.

    Re: recons

What’s wrong with giving 6 months? I’m not trying to be trouble causing but surely a recon done by a UKW member would rarely fail between 3 and 6 months? Are you selling them to really poor people who won’t pay much for them – is that the problem?

If the customer/landlord installs them, 3 month guarantee!

Don’t mean to be nosey, but that seems a bit harsh. As long as an IG claim isn’t related to installation problems why should they miss out on 3 months guarantee?

They were the easiest timer ever to replace though Wilf 🙂 Remember the MTH timers before them? I also have a vague recollection that when Hoover changed from a 3 post suspension to a 2 post suspension there was a wiring modification involving swaping two wires round – one was pink I think.
