Just to confuse the issue, within the first 6 months from point of sale the retailer has to prove the goods he/she sold were not faulty. But after the first 6 months the purchaser has to prove that they were! 😉
Oh, and in Scotland the 6 year thing is only in fact 5 years north of the wee border (canny Scots eh?) 😆
The Scots appear to have a lot more sensible laws in many regards.
The first 6 months aspect is very simple, if a part has failed, and it can’t be shown that it’s the customers fault, then it was definitely faulty when purchased. After that it gets more difficult.

What this shows is that, if you retail a part, then yes, you are the seller and you are responsible for the warranty even if your supplier offers none or goes out of business. You have no option other than to suck it up I’m afraid. Which is one of the primary reasons I’m always telling people not to cut their margins, allow for failures and even though it may smart a bit, you just have to put up with the cost of it.K.
In theory the retailer should have the same redress as the customer. They bought goods which have not lasted a reasonable length of time. In reality though the wholesalers and manufacturers have power and leverage over most retailers – especially independants. As squadman says, it’s the retailer stuck in the middle that unfairly bears most of this burden.
The only power they have is to stop selling goods that give them grief but this isn’t always possible.

Also, your customer can still demand a refund even if they cannot produce a receipt.A receipt isn’t strictly necessary, but they still have to prove the purchase in some way i.e a bank statement showing the cheque clearing or a credit card statement.

Thanks K, I suspected it may be OK in here.
I’m struggling to know what to advise the customer though. If despite her receiving a permanent failure error ISE did receive it, has she received a reply by now? Also, are you saying that many customers can’t send ISE an email if they use Blueyonder, and that many customers using Hotmail can’t either? Is this sort of thing happening to all businesses or is it something specific to the hosting set up you are using? It sounds like an unnacceptable situation to me. Losing customers is far more serious than spam isn’t it?

K.I’m not sure I follow this K. Is Li saying the emails were delivered but she was told they weren’t? If they were deliverd were they replied to?
BTW, I usually disable people’s email addresses to prevent it being harvested. Is this unecessary here because it’s a members only forum?

Participantkwatt wrote:We have discovered that, if it’s a Hotmail (etc.) user that there may be instances where there is a bounce as the email address sent from (or server) differs then it will be bounced by the spam filters. 😕
Undoing this rule would lead to loads of spam getting through. 🙁
K.
It’s your call, but can a business afford to lose any potential customers? Just putting our email addresses up leads to tons of spam, we just have to deal with it (I highly recommend Postini BTW who filter out about 98{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of all my spam and I get about 300 spam emails a day)

According to the headers she’s using incredimail, which can add stupid pictures and sounds to an email but it looks like a pop3 email client not a web based one.
Also, it looks like a different reason than that which the first customer experienced. His email was bounced because – “Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual alias table” whereas this one states –
“Recipient address rejected: Policy Rejection- Please try again later” (but she later received a permanent error saying, “retry timeout exceeded”)These could be isolated cases, but potentially there could be more. We only know about these two because they were able to post in my forum about it. Anyone just finding the ISE site whouldn’t have anyone else to report it to if they didn’t want to telephone.
I’ll forward the headers I have to you K so it can be looked into further or forwarded onto someone at the hosting company.

The customer in question should have emailed again the other day and fCC’d it to K.Watt.
She sent me copies of the bounced email reports and they are the same as the last time – that is, they seem to be pointing to the old server

I remember it well. He shorted out a single tub or spinner with his screwdriver lol.
I believe people usually want to kill the messenger if he’s bringing unpalatable news, so why upset someone? We need to be much more subtle. I mean, would you look at the blokes wife and say, “gawd, who told you that …..”

ParticipantRe: ISE Email address bounces mail
I’ve just had another potential customer saying the following –
I too have tried to contact enquiries@iseappliances.co.uk in the last few days and have had my email returned. Are you sure the problem has been sorted out?
I’d like to know where my nearest ISE suppliers are. Are their any in Croydon or South West London? Looking at the list on the ISE website, Beckenham looks nearest.
I sent a test email myself which hasn’t bounced back but hers have. I’ve requested the headers or the email which I’ll post here if she complies. Meanwhile, can you tell me her nearest ISE dealer so I can answer her query?Cheers

It’s what can happen when you write down exactly what you are thinking. I was going to post “Thanks John – every little helps”, as in these little ammendments and changes all add up to making things better over all. Then I thought that the famous slogan doesn’t look right when written down. I suspect it’s not grammatically correct. I found myself pondering, “every little what?” Then I realised I was wasting valuable time going off on tangents again, which is a problem of mine and accounts for much of my lack of achievement in life. Now I realise I’m wasting your valuable time too. Its 10 O’clock and time for a cuppa tea. All this because “Thanks John†seemed way too concise.
See?

ParticipantRe: DO YOU TELL THEM
It always amuses me how genuinely shocked people can be that something broke down at all within the 1st year. They are often astounded that it broke exclaiming, “it’s only 6 months old” in a tone that implies they previously believed this was an impossible event.
