From the sounds of it you will need the rear pcb.
On the casing of the rear pcb there will be a coloured round label now the expensive thing is that certain ones will need the main pcb and the dispaly pcb changed as the early ones had a software conflict.
To be honest sounds as he is quoting an over the top price.
Rough estimate would be about £200 using a decent compressor.
But if you can get one to fit in the cabinet the option is either adapt a new unit for the whole or have it repaired.But would an inverter work because of the high current required to start the compressor for that fraction of a second might opertate it over current trip?
the pcb will be behind the condensor behind a cover.
If it has not got one then its got to be a apm6855-1 from the dates given by you these didnt come about until 2006.
Sounds like rear pcb blown out from condensation from the rear vent.
Change pcb and defrost sensor.
Never had element fail but had once a sensor fail causing heaters to stay on which eventually took thermal fuse and warped fan motor.
No screws for this door its a paint scapper job that you will most likley damage the liner or a replacement door.
i remeber trying to change a gasket on an old aeg lavamat hc800.
Took 4 of us to put the dam thing on all in one go.
When I used to repair these years ago i used to put and 2 old mfi fridge feet into the gap between the weight and drum this gave you extra hands that makes it very easy to put the spring on.
