ModeratorRe: Hotpoint Countess wanted!
that article does show a pic of a Countess but says he wants an Empress.
When did anyone last fit an 081475 gearbox and 071120 post nut to a 1090 Empress. 🙂

Whilst I was working for Hotpoint in 1972, 3 different customers gave me wedding presents. 🙂

What you have is basically a 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} Indesit built in Washer/Dryer.
It should still be under the full 12 months g/tee, so if you are not happy with it give Hotpoint a ring, you will pay nothing for their visit.

Reading the first post in this thread suggests that the dryer neon is indeed on all the time.net 0159. After you fitted the new thermostats, you would then turn the selector switch to a programme setting, did the dryer neon come on as soon as you did this and before you pressed the ‘start’ button ? If this is the case then the relay on the module is stuck.

If as I suspect the heater control relay which is mounted on the Dryness module has stuck then the cost of this module together with another set of stats will cost you just short of £100. The possibility of sourcing a second hand module or a recon are very remote due to the age of the machine and the very rare failure of this module. There is a very slim chance that the rotary control unit is at fault, this is around £25 but my money would definately be on the module.

How old is the dryer, if it is under 5 years old I would strongly recommend that you contact Hotpoint. The dryer neon should be off whenever the motor reverses, it should not be on all the time.

Guest, if you would be so kind…………..?
Penguin45.
I checked on the earlier thread from this poster to ascertain which type of appliance was involved .

Time to call in the experts, almost certainly a dryness module failure, this would account for the rapid stat failure, the heater is on even when the motor is not running and when it is reversing.
Because the fans in this machine only ‘blow’ in a clockwise direction, the heater should be switched off when the drum runs anti clockwise for a short period to help prevent tangling.

ModeratorRe: Sparking after replacing brushes – Hoover WDM120
As a general rule, gen brushes are of a consistent quality, pattern spares can vary quite a lot in terms of quality. Although in the recent past genuine Hotpoint brushes did have some serious problems these have been resolved. For the small cost difference I would always recommend using genuine brushes. It all comes down to experience, some non gen spares are actually sourced from the same manufacturer that the original appliance maker uses, and on the odd, very rare occasion (Hoover armatures about 7 or 8 years ago comes to mind) the pattern spares are more reliable, however, overall genuine spares are in the main better quality. Using pattern, none mechanical/electrical parts such as door trims, handles, hinges etc is fine.
The same thing applies to my car, I would never, ever, fit non gen spares to my vehicle.

Could you clarify which button you are calling “active” do you mean the ‘drying’ neon. If this is on when you say it is then this is a fault I have encountered, once and it was caused by a faulty control (dryness) module keeping the heater on all the time. The heater should be disabled when the drum rotates anti clockwise. If the stats have failed as quickly as this then it sounds like job for an experienced engineer. I will check on the price of the module and post back.
This module is approx £70 + vat. If the appliance is under 5 years old a call to Hotpoint to take advantage of your 5 year parts g/tee is the best course of action.

From experience with these Candy produced machines this does sound as though you will soon be needing either an armature or a new motor.
I always fit genuine carbons unless it is difficult to get them.
Edit ,just spotted that the machine is 4 years old. You should have a five year manufacturers g/tee on the parts. If you have fitted non gen brushes I suggest you retain ( or recover from the dustbin ) 🙂 the old brushes and if the fault persists, refit the old brushes and contact Hoover who will fit a new motor for labour only.
Don’t mention that you have tried to repair it yourself BTW.

Is the active light on even when the machine is plugged in but not in use?
A slight burning smell just after working on the dryer could be disturbed dust or fluff burning off on the elements. It should not persist for more than a minute or so. If it does, then after removing the mains plug check for lint or fluff build up around the element and if possible use a vac to clean it. Take great care near the elements, they are fairly delicate. It is not a bad idea to remove the top at the same time and vac out any fluff that you can see. Getting further into the machine to clean is not something that you should really attempt yourself.

ModeratorRe: What is the most useful tool in your toolbox?
Surely there must be some other ‘old gits’ around here.
It is in fact a Hotpoint Mark1 twin tub pump spanner. The very first twin tub that Hotpoint produced in the early to mid 1950’s was called the Mark1. At the time Hoover dismissed it as the “Wishy,Washy washer’. It was advertised as having a no tangle action unlike the Hoover twin tub which tended to tie the clothes in knots.
The black bakelite gyrator did oscillate very slowly on the Mk1. It had an oiled filled gearbox with integrated stator. On the MK1, the wash pump was bolted directly onto the gearbox and it was impossible to remove one of the two mounting bolts with a conventional spanner. Hence the MK1 pump spanner. This machine also had a unique heater indicator, all later models used a neon but this machine had a household 40 watt bulb mounted on the chassis and long half inch diameter glass rod leading up to the top control panel. Several versions of this machine followed and became known as the 1400 model. All these later models had a faster wash action with a different gearbox and a wash pump driven via a small spring and collar from the stator cooling fan. The spin pump was driven by a flexible drive, a HL 2108, the very same drive that was used on the Hotpoint Top Loader when the two pole motor was introduced in the 1970’siadom

1 point for Hotpoint but you need to go a long way back. As a clue I started at Hotpoint late 1968.
