    Re: Advice on door weight

If the door is too heavy then it can slam down, the springs and ropes in it may not cope and over time they will break sooner than might otherwise be expected also.

    Basically, that’s what’ll happen.

    Re: Which? Fridge

Condensation is an issue. Build up of lint/fluff/dust. Spillage.

But the big one is ventilation, I’ve seen and I’m sure most that service refrigeration, multiple backs melted as some muppet hasn’t installed correctly and/or messed up the ventilation.

So, do not dismiss these reasons by any means as some I’ve seen, it’s a flamin’ miracle they didn’t go up.

What’ll happen, at best is, we’ll get a new standard (maybe with international agreement) on the backing material used. Probably after years of wrangling at huge cost, in millions, to the taxpayer. Maybe.

    And, errr, that’s it.

Story ended, everyone can relax and go back to normal till the next tragedy or something else steals the spotlight in the interim and they can drop this as it’s no longer news.

So there’s absolutely no guarantee of a legislative change as, it needs to be international, Blighty can’t just make up it’s own rules when it comes to international standards, even out of the EU.

The publicity, oh yeah, wonderful that is… tell people that stuff’s gonna kill them and if something does happen after one of the guys has been it’s worse than it was before as they’ll be in the firing line automatically I expect. Easy targets tinted on their backs.

So yeah Martin, what a fantastic result for Joe Public and the trade, just glorious isn’t it?

Till you actually think about it and the consequences.

My opinion is that, if you think this is a good thing, you’re dreaming. If you think it’ll bring any meaningful change, you’re dreaming.

Tell you what, revisit this in 1, 3 and 5 years, see if I’m right or not. I’d even be prepared to wager that the net effect of this will be the sum of zero for anyone, if anything it’ll be a negative.

    I am aware.

What some people will do to get in the papers or on the TV. πŸ˜‰

Basically, don’t you think figuring out why there’s a fire is somewhat more important than whining about the fact that plastic burns?

Or how about, making sure they’re installed, maintained and cleaned correctly.

    Re: DAG ( Domestic & General )

Part of the reason I dropped them years ago and one of primary the reasons I got out of field service completely, you are right, fixed price repairs where you take all the risk irrespective or what happens, endemic or epidemic failure, large spares cost increases and all that are all on you.

So I walked away from it.

In the end, as I explained at the time…

    We provide a service.

You ask us to go do a job and we do or, you don’t pay us for that service. Pretty simple eh?

What we are not is an insurer, that’s you and my service business is not here to indemnify you against losses from an insured or “ongoing service agreement” that you sell to your customer and it’s up to you to ensure you don’t make a loss on that agreement, not me.

I can’t recall if I ended with “have a nice day” or not but, that was that.

Clutching at straws a bit there. πŸ˜‰

If it were, it’d sound like someone was throwing a bag of spanners around at the back of it so, probably not, just the way they are like I said.

You can get that, a small stutter on compressor run start and end and more so on, shall we say, not so good compressors.

Nothing you can do about it, it’s just the way they are.

It’ll be the same thing repackaged. They won’t make several versions or buy in several versions of one component.

Re: Help please! – Smeg A2 Switching Problems

Uhm, Servevast also started using their own numbers, same reason.

We **ONLY** show/use the original manufacturer part number wherever possible.

That looks to be an original A2 circa 1999-2001 so uses this switch:

    https://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/8117301 … tor-switch

And there will be a wiring conversion to it as well required that, if you’ve not done may well have fried the switch or goodness knows what all and, as per the page notes there the supplier should have made you aware I’d have thought. And, supplied the conversion info as appropriate as well.

But, as I said, I’ve no clue what you’ve ordered so I’m not really able to comment as I’ve no idea if it’s right or wrong.

Re: Help please! – Smeg A2 Switching Problems

No idea what eSpares supplied as they mask their part numbers so you can’t price compare.

    There’s an A2-2 but no A2-2DA.

Assuming it’s an A2-2 then it’s this switch:

    https://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/8117302 … tor-switch

But there is a note on Smeg that says:

    Modifications MC0000000002192
ATTENTION: TO FIT THE NEW COMMUTATOR (WITH A 31.5mm LONG SHAFT), WHICH REPLACES THE OLD COMMUTATOR WITH A 40mm LONG SHAFT, YOU MUST ORDER THE COMMUTATOR EXTENSION SHAFT CODE170290086 (38mm LONG) WHICH MUST BE SNAP-FITTED ON THE EXISTING COMMUTATOR SHAFT P/N 818730278. ONCE THE EXTENSION SHAFT HAS BEEN FITTED, IT’S NECESSARY TO CUT IT TO GET THE PROPER ALIGNEMENT WITH THE KNOBS.

If you mail me a photo of the rating plate to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk I’ll work out what variant it is but my gut feel is you’ve gotten the wrong commutator switch.

Re: Help please! – Smeg A2 Switching Problems

I’d say switch was iffy but make sure you get the correct version of the A2, there’s several.

Wrong switch in it… it won’t work.

But without knowing what switch you’ve gotten, what version it is, it’s not possible to say much more.

Actually some info and, an apology as I messed up!

I didn’t notice that the stupid Eventbrite thing put a finish date for ticket sales in automatically for the back end of November. So, nobody could book… D’OH!

    Fixed it now though.
