KeymasterRe: Repair, refund or replace?
Yep, seems fair.
Martin is right though, almost any warranty I’ve ever seen gives the manufacturer the right to repair or replace at their discretion, not the customer’s I’m afraid. Of course that is in addition to your stautory rights as a consumer under the Sale Of Goods Act and it is also correct that the problem is really the retailer’s.

KeymasterRe: Repair, refund or replace?
Hi Charlotte,
If it is classed as a “trade sale” then Whirlpool may well be correct in that there is no automatic right to a replacement as trade sales are different from retail in some ways. It would also depend upon the terms under which the machine was sold in any case as it has been discounted in some way I presume.
Not being too familiar with the appliance I can’t really comment on the faults you’ve experienced but ifit completed the wash then it is doubtful that there is a timer fault I should think, I would not have seen concrete dust causing a timer failure. Yes, I suppose concrete dust could have shortened the life of the motor with dust in it, but it’s unlikely and not something I’ve seen before. And I have seen quite a few loose and faulty weights over the years, but generally they only do actual physical damage battering the inner drum in my experience.
Hope that helps.

KeymasterYes, but check that the spray arms are clear, you can take them off and clean them. They are prone to getting bits of rice, sweetcorn and other bits an bobs in them that affects their performance.
But from what you’ve said I’d be betting that it’s a detergent issue.

Then they can all claim that they are the cheapest in the UK for that model, given that they are the only ones that supply it. 😉

KeymasterFinish as a product is fine, I use Finish powder myself but I won’t use tablets as we have soft water here and one tablet overdoses the machine on almost any program.
Just avoid the “own-brand” stuff, horrid. 😉

KeymasterRe: magnetron repair !
Folks, and I do hope that this is read by a lot of people…
Microwaves are EXTREMELY dangerous things to tamper with and they are NOT for the DIY’r to be messing with in any way, shape or form. Even switched off and disconnected from the mains there is a capacitor in them that can hold a charge of up to 5000 Volts, this can KILL!!!
Touch the wrong two terminals and it’s night, night Sooty… permanently!
In fact, in the past they have killed. I can recall at least one poor engineer that was killed due to not discharging a capacitor correctly many years ago.
Do not mess with microwaves… period!

KeymasterI think it’s time that an anonymous source got these figures out in the open, don’t you?
Could someone please PM them to Rudi?
Oops, I did! 😈

If the traffic holdsat this level try 6 million by the end of the year, 5.5 million with zero growth, or thereabouts.
With any growth, hell knows, I gave up trying to figure out the growth of UKW a long time ago. 😆

KeymasterRe: Chemical residue left on plates, cutlery etc.
I assume you have tried running the machine with standard powder?
You won’t find many engineers that are fans of 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 products, I’ll allow you to ponder on why. 😉
If the residue is not there when you do not add the tablet then it’s pretty obvious that that’s the problem I’d say.
However it just so happens that I have “The Bible” beside me this evening which states that detergent residues are generally due to…
Detergent overdosing
Old/caked detergent
Using cool/short wash with tablets 😉
Using tablets in a small appliance (4 place setting)
Spray arm not working effectively
Detergent in a wet spray arm cupAs to No.3, the short answer is that if you use any of the ECO programs or low temp programs to achieve the energy efficiency then tablets are a no-no.
As previously stated, overdosing on rinse aid is just as bad as overdosing on detergents and will lead to unwanted residues being left. Underdosing will reult in food residues or streaking normally so it is vital that it’s right as with the detergents.
Hope that helps.

KeymasterWhat sort of residue is it that you have left?

KeymasterThere is a mod, but alledgedly the French Secret Service are keeping it a closely guarded secret with no part numbers or anything available, including information but that’s hardly a shocker from Brandt. 😉

KeymasterRe: Tricity Sovereign 4638 – Fan in bottom oven
larnerp wrote:While I think about it though, does anyone collect these obsolete machines for breaking? It might be a good business opportunity! 😉
Not really.
In Zanussi’s range alone there are normally in excess of 150 models that can change on a 12-18 month cycle either internally or externally giving new model numbers etc. and on top of that there’s changes in production to internal spares denoted by serial or production code versions.
Now think how many brands are out there.
Get an idea of the scale of the problem? 😉

KeymasterEh, they have a legal obligation to warranty parts for 12 months and they should know that. Unless it was changed FOC or under warranty, then it’s different.
The PCB timers are all in excess of £100, some round the £150 mark. 😕
