KeymasterYeah Martin, “network” is a dangerous word to use ’cause then instead of a union we’ll be branded as a work provider as well as or instead of “pain in the ass” which we are often referred to as being! ๐

KeymasterRe: JUST RAMBLING ON
I was being kind given that I’m often accussed of just slagging off the manufacturers, no idea why. ๐
Yeah, I used a load of those EEPROMS for other purposes and they cost pennies to buy and knowing people in the PCB manufacturing industry in East Kilbride I can tell you that populated boards produced en masse cost next to nothing once the tooling is in place.
Hence I view almost every PCB timer we get through the door as an absolutely shocking rip off on the part of the manufacturers.
But here’s a thought for you to have over the weekend, if the profit levels on these are so high just stop and wonder how much of YOUR money many a manufacturer has for stock sitting on the shelf. Even agents are getting lumped up.

KeymasterThe electronics are so ridiculous in pricing that it beggers belief quite honestly and that is generally the components that will give the most trouble. Heat, steam and vibration are not good companions for electronic components and they are generally unshielded against those elements.
Mass produced in the right plant I shouldn’t think that many of the PCB’s used cost much more than a fiver, maybe a tenner. But they cost us easily ยฃ50+ a throw.
There’s no new PCBA production methods on the horizon as far as I am aware, just changes in the use, method and tecnologies incorporated into what we have now pretty much. Cutting edge bio stuff is highly unlikely to see the inside of Granny’s washer anytime soon.

KeymasterRe: Dead Postcodes
It’s too much hassle to list out all the dead calls from Repairs@ but elminating over half of them as being testing this week there’s been about 41 calls lost due to lack of cover. The point being that people are using it!

KeymasterRe: JUST RAMBLING ON
Although the comparison drawn is to some extent valid Richard there is a glaring hole in that theory other that those that MArtin has pointed out. That is that the appliances with which we deal are primarily mechanical in operation and whilst you can change the control method, you cannot change the physics of how they work. Therefore they will be mechanical for some time to come I should think and will require fixing on occasion due to the cost to exchange.

KeymasterRe: Soap Powders & Technology Training
Cold washing technology has been available for many years, especially in the Far East from what I can gather as they generally do not have hot water there and many (especially Japanese machines) are manufactured without a heater in them.
As to trainign on the subject I’m still working on that, hopefully in time it will come to fruition but there’s no timescales I can give at present.

KeymasterSorry, I may not have been clear.
I work on the same principal and I will not move a call once it’s been booked, full stop, irrespective of the value of the call or the customer and yes, it is a case of first come first served.
Unlike you though I have a stack of faxes/emails with calls to book on them and I do prioritise them according to value (defining that is another matter) and they get dealt with accordingly.
Funnily enough a certain manufacturer we all know and love wanted me to shunt calls today to accomodate one customer and even offered a double fee to do it (zowee) but the customer is still booked on for Monday. Why should people who have been waiting suffer on a “who shouts loudest” basis?

KeymasterCustomer needs/value of the call.
In effect I take account of the customer’s need for the appliance and also the value of the call to me. The higher the need the higher it goes, but the value of the call also factors into that.
In the end we’re all mercenary and the highest bidder gets the best attention.

KeymasterIt could be that the detergent dispencer is faulty or has an intermittent fault on it.
The other thing to look for is that there’s nothing stopping the detergent lid from opening, dangling air fresheners are a favourite for that. ๐

KeymasterIs the appliance washing? It sounds as if it’s not from the description given and that would explain why the tablet isn’t disolving.

KeymasterRe: British Gas…time to tell all
Martin,
There’s enough juice in that to get attention along with a bit of intrigue as well and the exposure of what is, to me, a very questionable and sharp practise on the part of BG.
Woz sent it off course with his post, it’s that simple.
But you have to remember that whilst we can steer certain threads we cannot control them and I WILL NOT delete the comments as to do so is wrong. You cannot move individual comments or posts either, only the full thread.
Free speech. It has it’s pros and cons like anything else.
