Agreed, my exeprience of tablets in the field (and liquids for that matter) are not good and I regularly steer my customer’s away from such products.

Apart from anything else, think about it…

If you use a powder, salt, rinse aid and softener (for washers) then YOU control the dosage and the cost, not the soap powder manufacturer. Just think on that. 😉

    Wizard,

Just so you know that we are paying attention, I don’t have the codes to hand but I do have them in work (as will others I suspect) so if no-one answers this before then I’ll tell you in the AM.

There was a thread on the public forums that I think Shane answered that gave the reset procedure for most of them. IIRC, it’s power off the appliance from mains and press and hold the program button within 3 seconds of reapplying power until it bleeps.

We discussed this months ago Martin in this very forum and, yes, it will probably have a profound impact on this industry amongst others.

Some manufacturers who churn out less than brilliant appliances may well find themselves facing big bills they don’t expect though. You see I came to realise that, in my experience, that manufacturers don’t know anything at all about the vast number of customers that buy a new appliance just because it was too expensive to repair. Also AFAIK, Gfk do not track that information. 😉

Stick a Servis or Whirlpool part number on it and sell it on for £60 or so then! 😉

Re: Which Spares Supplier(Wholesaler) is best?

Martin wrote:All the more reason not to quote them manufacturers r.r.prices then if your only getting a pathetic trade discount!

Just a small point, but an important one nonetheless…

No-one has any obligation whatsoever to give a “trade” discount on spares, manufacturers are not obliged to offer any discounts at all in any way, shape or form just in the same way as you can choose to offer or not a discount as you see fit.

In the good old days where you bought in quantity, that secured a discount but now, with buying numbers dropping (it has been for some time) then the discounts fall. For example, people that used to order in 50 sets of Hotpoint carbs will now only stock 10 sets or so with good reason.

The problem for the wholesalers is that they cannot get the same quantities ordered and therefore the price rises in accordance with that, but I deviate from the point..

I still get the odd call from a local “trader” looking for bits from some of the obscure brands we cover and they invariably ask for a trade discount which I do not give them. The reasons are simple, I don’t do spares sales as a rule, I don’t make enough on the spares to offer any discount and it’s a total pain to do it as we’re not geared for it. Aside from that I know a lot of them are, shall we say, not the best repairers. 😉

Even when doing major brand work you see some of these guys once in a blue moon and they expect glorious discoounts which will just not happen.

By popular request the original topic can be found…

However it was agreed that there should be some minimum standards required for inclusion, I think Del did a big thing on it at one point but I can’t find it right now. 😕

    Feel free to discuss.

    Re: Membership Certificate

What I don’t want is to beat anyone with a big “you must do” stick to be a part of UKW, I never did and still see no need for that attitude. However, I do see a need for some form of basic rules to be included in any endevours that we undertake. This is not only to reassure the public that we do ask our members to treat them in a certain way but also for contract work, which is a subject that has to be viewed in a different light so far as I am concerned.

I also have a unique method for the semi-policing of such a scheme but more on that another time. 😉

UKW will remain open even if this does go ahead and I won’t change my own personal attitude to it either but I guess we have to start somewhere and by stripping it down to brass tacks in plain English is the best approach I can think of TBH.

The point about the certificate to show that you are a UKW member is to start that ball rolling in some small measure. If it works and it goes somewhere then great I’ll be happy with that, if not well, we tried it at least.

In the end it’s all about self-promotion this bit, we should really promote ourselves and promote the fact that we do care about what we do for a living and that (I think) we should demonstrate that to customers at every opportunity given to us be that end users directly or contract clients. And if UKW can go some way towards lifting our image in any measurable way then it’s a job well done.

Martin wrote:I think its very nice too Ken, I printed off the draft and I believe it would look good on any business wall alongside their other certificates.

    Good, that was the idea.

Martin wrote:Not sure what it would truly signify to the general public at large though? What type of accredition it represents, that kind of thing?

It doesn’t really mean much other than that you are a UKW subscriber, but it lets people know that you are, sometimes I think that’s one of the main reasons for such things.

That said, if we went forward on the code of practise/charter thing then maybe it would mean a bit more in time. And, like all such things, it can take years for it to sink into the trade’s never mind public’s minds.

Martin wrote:My UKW Whitegoods ‘Certificate’ hangs proudly on my website http://www.enterpriserepairs.co.uk/contactus.htm which in my case I believe has a similar effect for the public at large, hopefully ❓ I haven’t have a shop wall to nail one up on anyway 😉

Neither do I but everyone that walks through the door will see a nice certificate there now. 😉

See the whole thread in this forum about the shop module called “A Little Experiment…” which you even replied to. 😉

What I mean is sticking up unused/unwanted stock to sell on either to the trade or public at whatever you think it’s worth, within reason of course, just to claw back some cash that’s dead money sitting on the shelf.

There is now an OS Commerce module (only site admin can see it while we sort it out) that can handle litterally thousands of products. I thought that this was a nice positive way of putting it to good use for you lot.

Penguin45 wrote:Who the hell are Zerowatt? And why do they make Bosch and Whirlpool integrated Washer dryers?

Zerowatt were a small Italina manufacturer bought by Candy Group in the mid-eighties when their appliances were about as welcome as a dose of the clap! 😆 Now their just badged Candy.

Bosch & Whirlpool I dunno about but it will be to save costs on manufacturing integrated applliances, small market, big cost but they have to have them for the contract market and specialist kitchen retailers.

Still in existance AFAIK, but under ownership.

This will be an interesting link for many of you: http://www.giic.com/welcome.html

Penguin45 wrote:Why do Brandt deny any connection with the current range of Blomberg machines, but admit to the Ocean ones, both of which are sold by Comet? And both of which come form Brandt!

AFAIK most of the recent Blomberg is Brandt and the occasional Philco, who are 51{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} owned by Merloni (shocker ;)) the last I checked.
