ParticipantRe: Van signwriting
Well i dunno what to say really… i know ive done this on the odd occasion but only when ive been to someone who i can see is really struggling financially… but not often…
went to a house other day , they rang me… moaning and groaning that if it was gonna be a right off that they were not happy that i would still charge them 30 quid for my time etc.. i knew by the symtom over the phone it was a straight forward blockaed pump job and assured them it would only be 30 quid.. they thought i was cocky that i knew the fault on the phone.. i had to reassure them that 22 years in the business i can sometimes know the fault without looking..
got there.. big flash brand new house, porche and a bmw on the drive.. blocked pump =£ 30 quid i charged.. got a cheque and they apparently couldnt find their card to input the numbers on the cheque.. i wait to see if it bounces..
I have never been able to afford my own house nevermind them kind of cars…
I now make it clear.. its £30 regardless… if they dont like it.. GO ELSEWERE ( I POLITELY TELL THEM ) theres too many people out there that expect u to do things for nothing.. and the joke is.. it always seems to be the ones that seem to have a bottomless pit of money at their disposal.. the ones that seem to struggle on in life always seem to be the good ones IMO..
So now i prefer to lose the job than to waste my fuel and time for nothing.LJDomestics

hi A1 engineer… a little off topic, just had a look at ur site and seen:
“We offer a free call out and estimate, with fixed price labour charges”.
Just wanted to know how u work this one?
If u called to a customer.. turned out needed new pump.. u tell the customer.. they decide they dont want it repairing..
Do u walk away then with not a penny in the pocket?LJDomestics

I fully hear ya bud… thats exactly what i done yesterday with a customer…
Anyhow .. im glad i started this thread…since i found out from this thread that other tradesmen are getting a cheaper deal from connect i contacted them… discouts will be setup for me by thursday…so i am going to get my parts at the same costs to everyone else ( hopefully ) so its a good all round result afterall . 😛LJDomestics
ParticipantRe: Free Estimate.
i agree graham… but if a customer rings with a hotpoint machine and says its really noisy on spin.. surely u can give a rough est over the phone?
I know most of the time ya have to go first with certain faults customers describe over the phone…and afterall ..a EST is surely a EST… if a customer shy’s away at a very reasonable est over the phone…are u then not glad u didnt actually spend time and fuel going their in the first place?
I had one yesterday…rang on a saturday 4pm… can i run 12 mile and give a free estimate..i said yes first thing monday morning… oh i will ring back if i cant find anyone sooner she replied..yet specified about me giving her a free estimate 3 to 4 times within the call..but wanted me there within that very hour it seemed.
I do agree most of the time u have to go look… i have done.. i charge 30 pounds.. if it dont need parts its 30 pound.. if it does and part is a tenner then i say its 40 pound…i take 30 then and once part arrives ( if i dont have it already ) i go back and fit it.. and then take the other tenner.
But my minimum is 30 … i thinks thats VERY reasonable.. 30 + parts ( apart from bearing jobs ) but i dont have a hourly rate, its just plain and simple 30 +parts… machine BER? sorry but u still owe me £30.
If thats too much to people these days then its off to sign on ! 😕LJDomestics

I have just read your link EFS…
Im also finding certain machines are not very service friendly.
This machine awo_r4205 looks as if the front panel comes away for servicing of the element etc but it don’t…. it seems to be spot welded.. so im going to have to remove the drum from the top just to replace a element, Its crazy…i scrapped a machine the other day.. identical to my mothers…same model number etc… the scrapper had a front panel thart came off and my mothers doesnt.. its a joke…why would u make 2 identical models with different cabinets? it seems to me manufaturers seriously want to rid the the world of a repair service to make more on sales?
The days seem to be gone when u can give out a free est ( over the phone ) im feeling im needing to go check the machine and whats involved before i can give a EST these days…trouble is…customers want a EST but if u go and spend time finding a fault…give a very reasonable quote then they say they gonna get a new one and expect u to walk away without any cost…
anyone else having this and if so what to you do?
Lets be honest most say yes i want it repaired but a fair few per week expect a call out… a fault find.. and a price…then if they dont want it done expect u to just walk away empty handed.
It wont be long beofre i go bust at this rate.LJDomestics
