    Re: Smeg UK STX1 E9

    Thanks Guys.

After Poking my finger in the pipe from the sump and findng not a huge amount of crap, I decided to investigate further, so I pulled off the side pannel and removed the chamber to find a small amount of crap in the 3/4 inch tube running from the sump to the presure chamber, cleared everything I could find and stuck it back together and it seemed to work OK.

Just seems strange that the pipe only partialy blocked (maybe only 25{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d})could cause a problem, When you think about all the washing machines and Dishwashers that will quite happily work fine even if they only have a Gnats Todger of a hole left.

But it’s working, the customer is happy, and I got paid in cash. so hey i’m not complaining.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Also Check the inlet hole, it clogs up with scale.

Pull out the drawer and get the big long Philips (You know, the one for doing logic door seals) and twiddle it around the 3 inlets, that usually sorts it out, if not then the new dispenser is the best way forward.

I sell quite a few spares, but there’s hardly any profit in it, loads of people selling pumps for £10 bearings for between £5 and £15.

Problems arise when they want a detailed instruction manual to fit what you sell them, and if they blow themselves up, or flood the house because they can’t read or follow your instructions or have the common sense level or IQ of a hotpoint carbon brush,

YOUR THE ONE THAT GETS SUED.

    Re: advertising

Not meaning to hijack Simons thread,

It is more dificult to do it now, but they still try, this happend to me 3 years ago, I only had the free linage as my company name is really well known I didn’t need an advert, my customers used the book to get my number only. so YP didn’t bother to check as the cancelation call was made in the last week before the book was closed.

First I knew was when I looked in the book to check it was in as usual and phoned to find out why, they told me the date they were called to cancel it and explained that if a cancelation is made in the few days then they don’t always have tme to check.

The next year they were great they gave me a really good deal on a decent sized advert, and I couldn’t believe it when the YP rep called to ask why i’d cancelled it. I explained this had happend before and under no circumstances are they to cancel it. and if anyone calls to change the account details they must quote my date of birth and a password.

Last year someone tried to cancel it again and the rep warned me, now there is notes on my account not to let anyone do anything to my account without MY rep, who now knows me quite well, confirming it is genuine.

The sad thing is I know 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} who it was that was canceling it, but there is no way of proving it.

I will advise anyone who relys on free linage to check in the last week that the your details are being printed correctly.

Sorry Simon for stealing your thread and going off topic

    Re: advertising

    hi ya
A little question for you… What is your letter writing like ????

the best advice I can give is write a good letter promoting yourself and offer to give a little back and then get out that YP or even better go online to yell.com and search and get a list of all the local letting agencys and property management companys in the area you want to cover.

I did this after YP and Thompson took out my advert becase a competitor phoned up pretending to be me and said we’d closed down and would not be needing the advert, Customer remember your name, not your number, so word of mouth is great but having your number in the book helps them find your number when they go round to cousin Bettys house for tea at the very point her hotpoint WDs inlet valve jams open :o)

if you write to 40 you may get 2 interested, but remember they will almost always want Public Liability insurance. as it’s only £63 per year ( unless anyone knows a cheaper one) and although not a legal requirment you really shouldn’t be without it.

Charge sensible rates, Offer 10{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} to the letting agency (add it on the bill first) as they will pass your invoice to the landlord. they are happy, your happy and so’s mr bank manager…

the downside is, many want free estimates all I do is get the machine details and problem and give them an estimate on the phone bassed on that, and state if its not that or works out more expensive than that the estimate is free, you will also get crap off the tennants occasionally.

    Re: Customer Database

Something I should add and this is VERY IMPORTANT is that there will never be a single package that will ever suit everyones’ needs.

But between us I recon a reasonable base can be created that end users can adapt or have adapted to suit their individual needs.

What I have works very well for me and will probably work just as well for many of you, but on the other may not be any good some others. Everyone has thier own needs and requirments and The perfect package is not possible accross the board, only on an individual basis.

    Re: Customer Database

    Sure No problem.

What I will do, instead of sending you the one i’m using, I’ll knock up a tidier version that covers all the basic essentials that I think are needed and you can comment and critisise ( i know I can’t spell the bleedin word ) and tell me if you want it developed further in to something we can all use.

I’ve never had any problems with access but as it sounds like you already know, the table structure is basically the same for what ever database system you choose to use.

I have never really had any problems with search times, i’ve only got about 10,000 records on mine so this will make it a bit quicker and I have created relationships to have NO data redundancy to speed up seaches and cut data and tables sorted in a way to allow me search the most common search criteria more quickly.

I designed the application on SSADM and I know access is by far not the most efficient tool around but it works and is easy for most to use mainly because of that same GUI and as I was studying Access at the time I applied it to access, And I think generally most people have a copy of it on thier PC.

As I have said, if someone is prepared to take the time to write a full requirement spec, I’ll be more than happy to design the application for you.

And no i’m not after any £££, But who knows, we may get a package that is comertialy viable to the outside world !!!

    WOO HOO.
    that’ll save me a quid or 2

As I live just up the road from washvac (or Parts Center as its now called) I don’t usually bother with anyone else, I use Masterpart occasionally if i’m desperate but they don’t usually have what I need. or I end up with the wrong stuff.

When I worked from a shop we used to get an Electrue rep called Paul who used to be really helpful. is he still about ?? and whats the contact point for electrue as i’d forgotten about them till seeing their name mentioned on here.

    Re: Smeg Dishwasher fault

I know i’m new here and don’t really wanna step on peoples toes but have you considererd having the board repaired ?? this is a massive saving on the cost of a new PCB, and repaired boards are usually covered by a waranty by the repairer.

I am not familier with the model you mention, but I would assume it’s unlikly to be a proccessor fault, most likely to be Triac or relay or even somthing as simple as dry joint failed.

As I say I am new, but am very willing to prove my worth, knowledge and experiance with anyone that will benifit, so if you think i may be able to assist you please let me know.

    Re: Wages

my first post in these forums:

I basicaly blagged my way in to this work about 16 years ago, I used to watch my dad changing brushes and pumps and bearings on our old hoover and hotpoint machines that were put through the mill a bit as I was one of nine kids.

I left school and did an C&G in electronics and went off to repair TV’s and vids etc… I got fed up with this and saw an add in the Job Centre wanting an engineer to repair Washing machine, I went for the interview, recited what i remembererd from my dad doing and got the job, this was all workshop bassed and little or no customer contact was needed.

so I took a week off holiday from TVs and started the job planning to dissapear back to TVs if I got found out, and went about it like this, if it dripped, i changed it, if it didn’t spin i’d check brushes and if not that, short out the module to test if it was that. due to my electronics background I used to fix modules instead of buying new, (boss was well happy), pumps changed where required.

I found 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} was common sense and 10{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} product knowlage, 16 years on i’m still fixing machines and my product knowledge is pretty damn good if I do say so myself. I work for myself and am happy, I limit my work to that I can do in half a day. which is about 4 or 5 calls and if you average £25 profit per call 6 days a week you’ll see it’s It’s a very good trade to get into, it’s not as hard as it’s made out to be, but if your dealing with customers property in their own homes, you NEED TO KNOW what your doing, I was lucky, a started off on 2nd hand shop stock.

sortof off topic but just wanted to add my 2 pennies worth
