I have a distant memory of an interview with Jim, where he explained that the biggest problem with Bullseye was finding contestants thick enough to take part……..

All these wholesalers buy on a standard discount structure which varies depending upon which manufacturer they are dealing with. In Leeds, this led to our local Hotpoint agent offering a straight 26{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} to the trade, plus the usual “promotion” prices on fast movers – carbons, pumps, boots and the like. So, to allow the wholesaler to operate at a profit, we can safely assume that they are getting a 50{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} discount. Sell at 75{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of list and the margin’s pretty good at a glance. So, £10 list, £5 wholesale price, sell at £7.50. Now stop and consider that the purchase cost to the manufacturer is £0.50…… Your £5 wholesale price now represents a margin of 1,000{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} to the manufacturer! Getting the picture yet?
IT’S A RIP-OFF !
Now, let’s be fair here. Most of the wholesalers sell on at a reasonable margin on their purchase costs. Because of their fixed purchase costs (It’s a contractual agreement to buy against the list), they can’t negotiate a purchase cost, so the larceny goes on, perpetuated by the manufacturers.
When you consider the above, the policies pursued by Connect are nothing short of shameful. To blatantly put up an SSP far higher than the manufacurers own means that they are using the “list” system in reverse – fixed margin on purchase cost to achieve their own margin. This must be laughable in some ways – Connect double as a work provider. They must be BERing machines based on the expense generated by their own pricing policy.
The prosecution rests.

Yesterday I went out to the very elderly Mrs Sharp, who has a beautiful, barely used, just-out-of-the-box Hotpoint WM62P – which she hates. So the morning’s mission was to repair the spindryer. A Creda 37041, date code 268 – February 1968 if memory serves. Anyway, spin had become erratic – why had I still got a pair of Delco carbons in the van? Fixed it, customer happy.
The spinner though – immaculate. Chrome handles, metal lid, huge rubber feet and not a bit of rust in sight. Suppose I’ll be back in 30 odd years to sort it again.
Ee, they don’t make ’em like that now.

Probably the power of Google. Bosch is generally held to be a little better than most, however with the breadth of experience across the trade membership of this site, if you ask the question you get an answer…….. High ratings!

I’d start by checking clearance between control panel and work surface – is steam escaping? Has it been disturbed on its runners?

😆 Thanks Dave.
Actually, I know exactly what’s going to happen…… In about a fortnight’s time the twins are going to start menacing for twin kittens…….. And it’ll all start again…… The Yorkshire Animal Shelter have been customers for years, so I presume we’ll be paying a visit soon.
They’re great actually – the dishwasher is in the kitten room – absolutely hilarious when you’re trying to work, little blighters are everywhere (usually about 30 of them). Last time, I got to the door and the tool box mewed at me… Had to give it back.
Cheers,

The striker is the part sticking out of the casing below the lid which the door latch should engage to after you pull the door latch back to the “two prongs” position.
