Had a very steady property customer who tried out with Remploy last year – bought 3 machines for various rented properties – two of which I had to go and repair immediately and one which lasted a month before the brushes finished. All old Logics by the way – haven’t we moved on from them by now?

Needless to say they are now safely back in the fold buying Bosch and AEG and paying the proper price for them.

If the collets were a tight fit around around the drawing bolt the extractor would work, but they aren’t. Did one with my set a coulple of years ago and it very neatly pulled out the entire front bearing housing!

    Hi,
I prefer to think of myself as a sole trader rather than a one man band. The office is more or less manned full time, and we ONLY work to schedule. It ain’t difficult. Then again, I’m not involved with WPs.

    Martin,
Well said mate. We only have to do this because some design eejit removed the two slots which had been there for years.
Your method can also be successfully applied to that nasty two part merloni back panel and Indesit plastic tank machines.

    Hi Steve486,
Some good thoughts there. After 11 years on my own, we’re finding that a next day service is the acceptable answer (or fill the odd gap which arises in a day’s work).
Most of the problems seem to arise from the customer end however. Getting Make/Model/Fault info can be appallingly difficult. I have been to too many “It’s a white one and it doesn’t work” for it to be funny anymore. Give me the lady of the house every time ….. However, the wife is a highly competent engineer in her own right (She can STILL do a set of Hotpoint bearings faster than me! Rats.), and it does mean that she can bully the information out of the customers so I have a sporting chance of turning up with the right bits to do the job. It also means that she understands how to allocate appropriate time per call; which means that we can give customers a fixed time for the call – they like that! What has happened within the business though is that over the years the vans have got bigger as the level of van stock has risen. You need time to develop this, as you are returning a high level of profit into stock allocation.
If you compare this with what call centre operatives are trying to do (ie the work providers), you realise that the staff have minimal technical knowledge and see all calls as an hours work to be fittted in somewhere. If you work a big patch, you’re in trouble ……..
I think that “Deliver what we promise” is an admirable sentiment, but we need a rider – “Give us the info and the parts to do the job”!

    Penguin.

    Hi Guys,
I have no objection whatsoever to chipping in a few bob to the site to build a trade resource and lobbying body – the former would be of more interest to me as a sole trader than the latter – BUT we do need to consider just who we are admitting to our circle. It’s quite astonishing that in the few posts in this thread already we are looking at posts in the DASA site (which I can’t get into – not a member – looked at it early on and couldn’t see what it offered for the money – sorry) and on another thread saying we should shout the word loud and far.
If we are looking at creating a “members” site within the site we are riding for a fall. We allow the public into their help forum (Very interesting – they’re not as daft as we like to think – look at that dishwasher forum..), but so far we are not making any attempt to select our members, or layout minimum standards we should be working to. This is surely nudging into DASA territory…….
As for a trade show, what are we going to represent ourselves as? A bunch of people prepared to help the public at 2am? It’s very satisfying to get a message back saying thanks, but my business is out there from 10am until I get home.
I really think we need to sit back and develop this for a while, then go in with a plan, the results will be so much better. And we have to get past “YELL”; who claim to offer access to local tradesmen; Fairtrades (I was a member for years – they’ve really lost the plot) and the Guild of Craftsmen whoever the heck they are. Personally, I’ve never felt like a craftsman as I take a 6lb lump hammer to a set of bearings…..

Lots more to do before we can go with this, surely?

    Penguin.

    Greetings Fellow Workers,
Have received my drive shaft 50273511001 which was a bit steep at £57 – BUT I did get a free electric motor with it!! Which means there is nothing for it – I’ll get it stuck in the dishwasher over the next couple of days and let you know how we get on. Thanks everybody so far,

    Hi Pinky,
Take the serial number with you when you order – there are two relays (Well there would be, wouldn’dnt there – this “2nd time” Hotpoint after all).

    Hi Martin,
Good idea in principle, but I do have a problem with it – 75{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the so called engineers in my city I wouldn’t let through the front door!
Looking at the recent posts we appear to be building and developing a quality/service/value (with a little bit of attitude ….) position in the service market place and I would absolutely hate to see that undermined by recruiting every Tom Dick and Harry who think that slapping in a pair of pattern (why???) 161460’s makes them a service engineer. We all know who they are in our own patches, and you do wonder, HOW do they stay in business?
I have been quietly passing the word amongst the engineers I personally trust up here, you may be picking them up – I have no way of knowing, but I hope so.
I am in no way pessimistic about what we are trying to do here, but we need to be a little selective, surely?

    Penguin.

    Hi Dave,
Think of it as an air pump – the fan must run to move hot air through the clothes. If the fan is not running/clagged/blocked/obstructed in any way, the safety will trip and kill the heaters. This is the one with the red button on the heater box. The other thing to bear in mind is that the machine will only dry half a load at a time – if you’ve left a full load in to dry you are effectively obstructing the airflow and the above will apply.
BEFORE YOU CHECK OUT ANY OF THIS – PULL THE PLUG!!!!!!!
    Good luck,
    Penguin.

    Re: Hoover AB130

If it’s the ’round’ Hoover motor (as opposed to the ‘square’ Candy motor) you can buy the armature, tacho and magnet as spare parts. Nobody seems to want to stock them however. More profit in the complete motor perhaps?

    Hi Jonah,
Been and had a look – this one is a metal case with two external microswitches on it; no numbers though.
If it sounds like what you want send me a PM with the address and I’ll stick it in the post for you.
