I know K doesn’t like it (and HOW!), but we’ve kept ALL customer data on Lotus Organiser for 11 years now – even the OUTS, NO ACCESSES, nasty dog, awkward kitchens, Mrs Mad’s, RTFM’s etc. Oh, and the bad debts as well. We can generally track down a repeat customer before they’ve finished introducing themselves, and tell them the life story of the relevant appliance down to model and serial number (and probably their inside leg measurement as well). I also tend to record any Manufacturers service notes as well.

It’s all info and it’s all crucial.

The number of independants up here who don’t even log model numbers is astounding! How do they deal with recalls or even order spares?

I’m going to stop; it’s depressing.

Funny how things come back to you after a pint or four. There’s a chap in Castleford called John Bunting (Sorry, NO idea of the number) who came up with a puller specifically for the 6205 outer race. It was a sort of twist fit insert into the outer race, then you shot the bolt and sleeve into place and IT WORKED!! NO spring loaded collets or any of that nonsense. I’ll ask about and see if I can’t track him down.

Honestly, it was one of those simple ideas that when you see it you go “Why didn’t I think of that?”

I did once solve this with a pressure washer – the customer had had the conversion done several years earlier and was reluctant to pay out again – we took it out in the garden and seriously hosed the damn thing! Probably more luck than judgement though.

Worth noting that the one’s which suffered most with the clogging problem are connected to the hot water supply; especially immersion systems. This also seems to apply to the various Thomson built machines and Diplomats.

All the money they save by reducing the heating time gets swallowed up by me having to clean out the fill/water level baffles. False economy?

Tinhips – I’m a bit of an insomniac. 4 or 5 hours is quite enough. And it’s nice and quiet in the early hours, so I can think about what I’m saying without the herds of children and teenagers rampaging round the house.

Sorry for the delay, just read where this thread has been heading…

    Sources:
Well, it ain’t that big a city. I’m barred out of Remploy owing to the property work. I have always said what I think and they didn’t like it. Very annoying, as they “Don’t do Bosch or AEG”. All those carcasses going to waste at £10 a throw. We have a major reclamation yard in our adjacent city, where they put the Bosch’s and AEG’s (and other oddity’s) to one side in case the Penguin wants them (nice). There’s also 1 or 2 private enterpise reclaimers up here and they ring up when they’ve got a few for me. Well, no-one else wants them – they’d rather be doing WMA’s. WHY?

Finally, there are the paying customers, who all have instructions that when they’re ready to change appliance, I’d really appreciate the old one, even if it doesn’t go round again, there will parts to help less advantaged customers. I don’t play poker, but I’ve got the face for it!

So, no major individual sources, more of an accumulative effect and customer relations exercise. Plus the inevitable “What’s in that skip/garden/back alley etc” as you go round. Admit it, we all do it – you can spot an abandoned machine by instinct after a few years in the job!!

    Just an idea,

NO, they don’t ……. You ring the number on the thread above (which is not a Hotpoint direct number), say the magic words – Noisy and Watch dog, and they will come and put you a new tank in for £85. I’m telling you the truth!!

I recently went to 3 year old one locally, gave the old boy the number; he rang up while I was there and they turned up and did the job three days later. It’s worth bearing (no pun intended) in mind that ALL that number does is sort out tanks; nothing else.

Got a pet customer? Next time, try it! You won’t have to stand the guarantee either.

WHAT WHAT WHAT? We used to be Francophobes, (CSF Thomson), now we regularly upset the Italians (at least they haven’t tried to invade us directly…) now we’re going to do the Far East?

    I love it.

Somebody ought to start a company in England which makes washing machines.

    Now THAT’S cynical ……..

I’ve managed to follow this one so far, but you’ve lost me now Whirl3. If it was 2 trips it was worth more than £35 surely?

Which comes to £82.24, and I’m not going to fit it for £2.76!!

Megger? I fell off the plastic bucket in a phyisics lesson while attached to the Van De Graff Generator (Also great band by the way) MANY years ago and managed to blow up most of the class in the process. Happy days ……

The other great way to get zapped was the changing the old Bendix door lock, which was wired to the capacitor. A mistake I only made once – Thank God.

Favourite tool I used to use regularly was a specially bent up piece of piano wire for winding up the snail drive clamp band on the old Philco Bendix machines. Don’t see many about now though.

    Hi John,
Most of the older H/pt d/ws were licence built from (or sometimes built by) Bosch. If you can find an FD no. on the label at the top of the inner casing of the machine, Bosch may be able to help you. Don’t get you’re hopes too high though.

    Good luck,
    Penguin45.

(We recently got a top pump housing for a 35 year old Bosch dishwasher; the girl at Bosch was upset because she had to get it from Germany. It took 4 days to come).
