Replacing carbon brushes does seem to be a law of diminishing returns. Each successive pair of replacement brushes lasts less time than the previous set as the efficiency of the motor drops with age.

To deal with your immediate problem, if the motor is not happy with the new set of brushes, consider the following:

1/ If the commutator has “grooved”, the brush face is not running against the commutator properly – it may be running on the shoulders of the groove and not the running surface = very poor contact. Removing the brushes and relieving the corners of the brushes will allow them to sit home properly for better contact.

2/ Many years of brush wear deposits the carbon dust everywhere. A thorough clean of the brass sleeves which the brushes run in can make a surprising difference to the contact force on the commutator.

3/ Radiusing the brush tips to fit the commutator can help matters. They are flat but off-set when new – the commutator is round, so a marginal contact at best.

Can’t beat a set of fine finishing files for a job like this.

LG won’t work in the Search facility, Garn. We edit “Lucky Goldstar” into any new LG post so as there is something for the Search engine to find in the future.

Not sure what Mike’s telling you to buy, but you need a stator – Hall Effect Sensor is integral with it.

Re: Electrolux Zanussi ZCE76190W – Oven way too hot

    ZCE7610W?

Problem will almost certainly be related to the fan oven element and the thermostat.

Element replacement is straightforward – remove rear inner panel for access (with the power off) to reveal all.
The oven thermostat, as you appear to have realised, is a bit of a cow.

Element is p/no 3116448006, thermostat is p/no 3890771243. spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk will be able to supply these for you promptly if you wish to go ahead. Alternatively, use the repairs@ link on the left to find a UKW repairer in your area.

I *think* I’ve got my head round it…..

(I deleted MTLandscape this afternoon. Just came home to print a page off from SIOS, looked on UKW – there’s that b’stard again – ZAP! Sorry about that.)

Re: American style – BLACK – ICE & WATER – which one to

How much of your holiday entitlement do you wish to use up, waiting for service calls?

Seriously, it’s late and you obviously have a bit of time on your hands – use the “search” facilty and have a read through the Fridge Forum. A lot of it isn’t pretty reading. If you really want to do this, Admiral and Armana should be serious considerations as well as the GE stuff. You shouldn’t consider anything less, as the rest are budget copies. £800 for a budget copy? Yup!

The Retail Guru – Don – will be on in the morning and will be able to give you some rather more specific guidance. I just fix stuff. 😀

If you want an American style fridge that works, buy an American one. The first three on your list aren’t…….

Masterpart charge you more if you don’t order online….

None of them are perfect. There’s one I use who can’t deliver a special order part in under two weeks – usually three (You know who you are – you read on here – fix it), especially Distri stuff. Especially annoying when I can get 2 day service through a local small distributor for an extra couple of quid. There’s one I use whose accounts department is incapable of telling the sales department that the account is up to date. I could go on…..

You (literally) pays your money and takes your choice.

Was that MTLandscape back on for a second go? Very efficient as spammers go. Nailed him once earlier.

Door switch faulty or float switch in base jammed in “full” position would be the ones to start with.

    National general spares wholesalers:

    Qualtex
    Homespares
    Masterpart
    Connect Distribution
    Europart.

Pick any two and you’ve covered most options.

Flow meter – water wheel containing a magnet is spun by the incoming water flow past a reed switch in the housing. Computer counts the resulting pulses and works out how much water is entering the machine.

If it doesn’t, flood protection operates fill, drain, fill, drain……
