As you can tell, Aussies are extremely helpful – sometimes we can’t stop helping 😀

Re: Help an Aussie with a Hotpoint WD420

I have had a similar problem reported to me just today (jimbob42 – do you work with Colin at Deakin uni? It could be the same one)

Generally if it was bought in AU, then contact the seller for info as to where to get parts. A company called DEC quite often import small quantities of appliances and hold over a few for spares. Others may do similar. I have never seen Hotpoint appliances in any quantity in Au stores.

I doubt that Arisit (the AU importer of Ariston & Indesit) could help as they are generally unable to supply a replacement PCB for any machine without both model & serial number.

Did you actually get a price on a PCB or just assume ?
LG PCB’s are actually reasonably inexpensive and it would be well worth the expense on one of these.

It’s common for a PCB fault to cause these to not fill. Replacement part should be readily available.

Re: LG Washer Making Weird Fluttering Noise?

I am an LG service agent and have not come across anyone else with noisy pump issues. LG pumps are exactly the same as used in many other brands (they are not made by LG) so if it was a widespread problem it would have been encountered since this started if not before.

I realise that the noise concerns you, but as I have said before – if the machine is pumping out effectively, there is not much to be worried about. The machine has at least a 2 year warranty, so if it is a problem then the pump should fail or get noticably worse in that time.

Unfortunately the price you pay for a cheap machine is that they can be a little more noisy or rough on the clothes. I still think that in the price range you bought, LG is the best value, but it is still a price/quality compromise

I’ll jump in here and agree with BigSmokePiker – on a budget machine the LG or a cheaper model Bosch. If the purse strings stretch further, then paying more will get a longer lasting machine – a Miele should last 15-20+ years (mine is 23 years old and going strong) where the LG should last 8-10 years.

Steer well clear of any machine made in China or Italy.

Most Hoover front loaders would be well past their use by date, the old ones that would do 15+ years are now 15+ years old. The newer ones were not as reliable.

Re: LG Washer Making Weird Fluttering Noise?

Having listened to Meeshu’s sound files, it does sound like the blades on the pump impellor are hitting something.
It’s very hard to diagnose from a distance (and I have been wrong before when trying) but I would certainly be having a close look at the pump and trying to see if there is any sideways give in the pump impellor.

    Do keep us updated please

This would be my thoughts also (note my first response to this thread)

It sounds, from your description, like the pump is developing an airlock once the water has been drained away. The sound I think you are describing, I would normally associate with a dishwasher that has been oversudsed

As the machine is draining fully I very much doubt that there is a problem.

Re: LG Washer Making Wierd Fluttering Noise?

The pump that is in the LG is probably made by the same manufacturer as the pumps in Electrolux, Whirlpool and others. Generally pumps will last approx 5-8 years but it not that unusual to have one fail during the warranty period.

I would not judge the machine by the pump as they are made by different manufacturers.

LG spares are normally very good (in Australia at least). Your model uses a very standard LG pump so I doubt it will take long to get the part in.

LG appliances are among the best value available in our end of the world. They are well priced for spare parts so at least if there is a problem, it can be relativey cheaply repaired.

I realise it has probably already been looked at, but I would not normally suspect a problem if the machine drains fully.

Best way I have found to give washing machines a good clean is with Tricleanium.

Use a good sized handfull of Tricleanium in a machine full of HOT water, agitate for a couple of minutes to fully dissolve powder and then turn machine off for one hour to soak. Then start the machine and allow it finish the complete cycle.

Tricleanium is available in most hardware stores and is found in the paint preparation section.

    Re: Hoover washer agitator action

There is more to the gearbox than just the plastic gears that you see when you take off the cover. There is also a clutch mechanism between there and the shaft and the brake as well. It all comes as a single unit and is (apart from replacing the plastic gears) not repairable, and not worth replacing

These machines must be at least 8-10 years old and have lasted as long as they were designed to last. I would say that it is time to look for a replacement machine.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news

It definately sounds like the gearbox is faulty.
Pulling it apart is something that I can’t help you with as I usually consider these a disposable item, generally the gearbox is only available as a complete unit (and costing ~$150.00)

Being a 1998 model I would be hesitant to spend much as the expected life of these is usually 8-10 years.

    Re: Hoover washer agitator action

Sorry for the delay in replying (bl**dy computers)

The brake on the gearbox is a band around body of the gearbox. The plastic brake lever has a metal end which locks around a tag sticking outwards form the brake band. If this tag is missing, then the brake lever has nothing to grab onto.

If it is a brake problem, you would be able to turn the bowl freely while the machine is off, otherwise the bowl should be locked in position and resist movement.

    A ratcheting sound?
    Generally, in order of probability and expense;
1 The brake lever is worn
2 The solenoid/motor (not sure which on that model) that operates the brake lever is faulty
3 The gearbox brake tag is physically broken.

1&2 are worth fixing, 3 is probably not.

If you can’t see what is the problem it is best to call on the experience of a professional who will know what to look for.
