Re: How much to charge for parts?

I work in a different market to most here (Australia) but have a very simple system; Items under $200 cost – add 50{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}, Items over $200 cost – add $100

Some parts have exceptions, inlet valves and belts tend to have higher markups, even the RRP can be >100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}.

I figure anything less and it’s not worth my while, particularly for some manufacturers I have to pay up front with credit card to get the parts.

Mostly I work on upmarket products which helps as when there has been a bigger investment in the product, there is more chance of a repair being done.

Re: How to remove main bearing from a toploader?

The next step is to pull the gearbox out from under the bowl, most likely what will happen is that the gearbox will pull out, but leave the upper shaft stuck in the bearing meaning you will then need to replace the gearbox as well.

Gearbox for this model is should retail at about $160-180, bearing & seal around $30. To avoid getting the gearbox out (very hard without a special puller), the top bracket can be replaced for about $35

The reason that your local service guys don’t go this far is that service call & labour charges would add $150-200 making the job not worth doing.

Re: How long is a 5 year warranty

I commonly get questions like this from customers, often customers that feel they have been unfairly dealt with by other repair firms. My standard answer is that you get warranty on parts (and labour) that you pay for and not on what you dont pay for.

Most recently, I was replacing a heater on a Baumatic dishwasher that was about 10 months old. It replaced a 4.5 year old one that was changed over under a 5 year warranty and was considered by the importer to be 3 months out of warranty. The customer was furious when they 1st called me, but calmed down when they found that all companies that I deal with work in the same way.

That said though, I am currently repairing a dishwasher (under warranty) that is about 3 months out of a 2 year warranty. The customer is experiencing recurring problems that have seen him already passed through 2 service agents prior to me. I think it would have been cheaper to replace the machine when it first was troublesome to diagnose.

I don’t have details on this particular model, but recently I had a 44050 with similar symptoms, replacing the electronic unit solved the problem (there was nothing visually suspect on the electronic)

If its wiring you want, you’ll probably find a schematic diagram wedged under the timer.

If you have access to Brandt spares, try 31X5755 – its called a rocker switch but it looks the same.

due to the incorrect dishwashing liquid

That’s the most common cause for this problem, few people will admit to it though 🙂

    Glad to have helped.

    Re: Technika keeps running.

Technika is a general importer of rebadged applainces, I think that particular model is Brandt or Fagor. The “black thingy” is the overtemp thermostat which is housed on the heater box.
If the machine is not heating, a firm press on the red button can reset the thermostat – power off first – then allow it to complete the cycle with water in it as it will, most likely be into the heating stage and will not advance on its own without completing this. The timer is awkward to access, also prone to shorting if advanced wrong, so allowing it advance on its own is preferable to fiddling with the timer.

Edit: with the info above, it is a brandt sourced dishwasher

There is a kit to change this switch for an alternative type, which is less prone to corrosion. The kit will not be available at a general electrical wholesaler but you should be able to get one from a local appliance repairer.
Expect to pay around $40 for the kit.

Re: fisher & paykel when agitator hit the sides

Check that the machine is reasonably level. The bowl hangs from the top so if the machine is leaning to one side, the bowl will be closer to one side than the other.
Other causes could be worn springs on one or more of the suspension rods.

    Re: Baumatic oven

Generally high temperature resistant silicon (labelled RTV in Australia) is suitable for repairing oven doors. Some Baumatic (if the Oz variations are the same) have the brackets glued to the glass and a strong solvent could loosen them.

This is generally beyond the capabilities of the home handyman. Contact the local Bendix specialist in your area, but be prepared to spend >$300 to have this fixed.

Check the inner bowl to see if it is loose, try lightly wobbling the bowl. This could indicate a broken spider (the bracket at the back of the bowl) or worn bearings – both are common problems, particularly if you regularly do cold/quick washes.

What is in these tablets that causes this reaction?

    short answer: detergent 🙂

I see this problem regularly (in Australia) with one common theme:
oversudsing only occurs when the user rinses dishes before washing.

It appears that these tablets are excessively strong and designed for the dirtiest possible dishes. I generally advise customers that rinse first to cut the tablets in half and this solves any problems. Though, when the cause is explained, many go back to powders.
