ParticipantRe: IOT enabled Engineers
Just found out you can get an ikettle operated from your phone – a snip at £99 but you still have to put the water in and pour it out by hand. Perhaps repairing kettles is back on the agenda I’m sure Ive got one of those ‘castle screwdrivers’ for repairing Russell Hobbs tucked away in the garage.
Oh but didnt the old teasmaid pour it into the cup for you – plenty of them at carboot sales. Money to be made from an iteasmaid?reaper

Good grief I had to Google IOT fridge to find out what the fuss was all about. It seems the only advantage is that it will ring you on your phone to tell you that something has gone off – but you still have to open the door to chuck it away. Oh and now they are being hacked-what a shame. Over complicated nonsense, manufacturers desperate for added value. But it seems there are plenty of mugs who will buy this sort of thing. Dont get me started on Dysons £299 hair drier- he’s trying to peddle it on TV again.

ParticipantRe: Whirlpool to do a recall on Hotpoint dryers
Friend of mine got a call last week from Hotpoint/whirlpool saying they’d had a cancellation so they could do his modification that afternoon as they were in the area.Previously they had said December. Engineer turned up, took the back off and said he couldn’t do it because it had the old flat back drum and he would need a new drum and gave him a number to ring. He rang and was told they would replace it if he took out the warranty, if not he would
have to pay their call out fee. He wasnt offered a replacement. Curioser and curioser?reaper
ParticipantRe: Bosch washing machine new brushes fitted
How about doing a continuity check from the motor plug on the main control board – its easy as they are in pairs. If thats ok the problems with the board.

Thanks Martin. £150 repair, another BER on a 2 year old Bosch. Over complicated nonsense for a basic 1200 spin machine.

ParticipantRe: Footwear?
Bloody hell retract my post about Wynsors . I bought a pair for £20 with steel toeys on Wednesday as they didnt have my size in what I really wanted. However these have worn down to the metal in 2 days. Taking them back tomorrow and demanding my money back. Watch this space.

Sounds like a poisoned chalice to me, nearly on a par with being England Football manager or candidate for prime minister. I think I will decline.

ParticipantRe: Footwear?
Wynsors have plenty of cheap workshoes from £16 upwards with steel toecaps. Last me about 6 months but I’m heavy on them because I do a bit of floortiling as well. Laces are crap.

ParticipantRe: one advantage of Whirlpools take over of Indesit…..
Hotpoint parts already ramped up. I paid about £125 for a tank last year – just been quoted £179 for the same. Same price as Whirlpool tanks.

If it tries to agitate when you hold the drum its the spring in the gearbox.

ParticipantRe: Whirlpool to do a recall on Hotpoint dryers
Things seem to be unravelling for Whirlpool and now the media have got hold of the story I think it is going to run and run. A good place to watch is from a distance. I still repair these driers but just remind my customers to clean the filters and maybe Whirlpool have a recall for a modification. Never had a fire on one and the Daily Mirrors picture didnt look like an Indesit as it claimed.

ParticipantRe: Cheeky blighter.
It seems that the low life are trying to work a fast one here in Calderdale. Phone call yesterday- would I like to buy 15 washers for refurbishing £15 each. Nothing much wrong with them just had their mains leads cut off so he said.
These are insurance write-offs out of the floods around here, he has probably just picked them up outside houses ,stuck a hosepipe on them to make them look clean then try to sell them. They’ve been full of sewage etc so beware. Could be some of these that have arrived over the hill in your neck of the woods Jim.reaper
ParticipantRe: Argos advert
I think its more about Whirlpool dumping the Indesit name and dumping the stock I feel sorry for small retailers with stock. Lost sale today because I couldn’t compete on price – looks as though we’ll be losing money on Indesit and Hotpoint appliances luckily we haven’t got many.

Whirlpool will have known about these problems of design before they bought the company. The Hotpoint name is what they want as it is still the leading brand name in the UK. Most manufacturers test there rivals products and pinch ideas off each other so they would know of the flaws in design in the hotpoint driers, so can we assume the cost of the modification has been factored in. However if they haven’t done their homework it looks like an almighty cock-up.

Tried to calculate the logistics of converting 1 million driers. If an engineer could do 8 a day 5 days a week 50 weeks a year thats 2000 a year that would mean they needed 500 engineers just working on these driers to complete them in a year. You’ve got all the back up staff arranging the calls, manufacturing the parts required, stocking and associated infrastructure. Cost on each engineer about £40k- and thats conservative. Plus they have got to employ more engineers to do the usual day to day repairs. It seems like a very expensive nightmare but Whirlpool must have known that they were buying a bos (bag of ****).
