ParticipantRe: Revisiting good old Vinyl.
Ooh and when you play your vinyl you’ve got to have some suitable retro 1970’s equipment to play it on preferably with brushed aluminium fronts, lots of knobs and lit displays. At the moment using a vintage Sansui receiver (nicely balanced knob for the tuner-what bliss) and some Kef Concerto speakers(wife hates these because theyre a bit large). You can still get all this sort of stuff on fleabay for bobbins, hours of fun for us boys of advancing years.

ParticipantRe: This will please the recon appliance guys
Bosch Classix/Exxcel 1200 and 1400 recons still selling well, plenty of parts and better value than most of the sub £300 machines on offer including the current crop from Bosch. Only problem seems to be customers wanting 8kg machines.

ParticipantRe: Booby-trapped Hotpoint Washers
Almost getting to the point where faults can be programmed in so you have to get the thing reprogrammed at a cost (what a nasty thought but then again what about VW).Ive thought about this so I bet most of the major manufacturers have. As for Hotpoint another service engineer I met today put it in a nutshell -‘Flash looking machines with crap bearings and Mickey Mouse electronics’.Cant expect new owners Whirlpool will improve the bearings although they might have something to say about the electronics but dont hold your breath.

From what I can gather its basically powdered citric acid hence the lemony smell. Google it and I think you can buy it in varying amounts. Worth a punt? Up here we have soft water but still get smelly washers due to low temp washes and using too much detergent, customers use Dr Beckmanns and I recommend a blind wash at 90 degrees with a topfull of bleach. The next wash should only be whites just in case any bleach is left. Problem is soap deposits tend to accumulate in the drum support and folds of the plastic tank.

Watching that video again I could ‘desell’ a lot of fitted kitchens. Often heard myself saying ‘Who fitted this then’,’bloody morons’ etc. As for slagging off certain brands I just diplomatically inform the customer that Hotpoint are not a good British brand anymore, its amazing the brand loyalty after so many years of foreign ownership. Ditto for Hoover and Servis. Customers ask for our recommendations and I try to be honest, so what do you say when they’re getting rid of their ageing WM or WMA do you recommend another Hpt?

Ooh wow where do we start with this shower at Hotpoint. Had a call from a customer today who I went to a month ago and told her that the bearings had gone and it was BER by me, but Hpt might do it for their callout fee as it had 5 year parts guarantee. They persuaded her to take out the 12months warranty at £150 and replace the tank. They turned up a week later with the wrong tank then returned another week later with the right one. She used it for a week then it started flashing F03. Hpt said they couldnt turn out for at least another fortnight so she kicked up a stink and Hpt said they would reimburse her the £150. I’m going Monday with NTC and complete harness and boards (loads of these about due to so many drum failures). What a way to run your organisation. One way Hpt could alleviate this situation is by reducing the price of the tanks so independents could fit them and take some of the pressure off themselves but Hell will freeze over first methinks.

Beko getting a bit of a caning in that article.

ParticipantRe: Analogue pressure switches
Yes I’ve used the reset procedure a couple of times as described Martin but I was more interested in the faults that these switches can kick up as hotpoint have used a few different makes tied into a few different types of control boards. As for the franchised engineer I think he might have been trying to drum up some easier business rather than fitting tanks for a pittance.

Comparing like for like with Zanussi ZDC8202P @ £249 and Zanussi Heat Pump Condenser Tumble Drier ZDH8333PZ @ £399 still a 25year difference. Sorry to be a tad pedantic but I originally had a scientific background and am very distrustful of corporate claims. However the flaw in my argument is that I’m still using the figures from the Hoover drier and extrapolating from that. It would be interesting to get the figures for like to like. This is what the likes of ‘Which’ should be doing.

Now just going on the capital costs of the two driers the Hoover at £269 and the John Lewis at £549 you would have to have the latter 47years to break even. However the Hoover would probably have to be replaced long before the John Lewis so the best comparison would be between a John Lewis ordinary condenser(nearest is AEG T75280AC at £378) and the heat pump one. Only 27 years to break even, I know which one my money would be on.

The old Hotpoint 1700 series or the 95 series knock spots off any of the new driers they would dry a load in half an hour. The air coming out the back was like a gale force wind. Alright they only turned one way but there again was the reversair facility just really a marketing opportunity. Because these heat pump driers are on for longer times belts and bearings are going to wear out quicker(work for us especially if hotpoint do a version).

ParticipantRe: Dangerous fridges
Nothing will be done by the manufacturers until somebody sues and wins some big numbers or they are forced to by regs. Putting metal backs on is going to increase costs and cutting costs/quality is the name of the game these days. Same old corporate game ‘What can we get away with’.Yes I am A cynical old git.

ParticipantRe: Bosch better than Hotpoint, ‘Really’ ?????
When I get a call for a Bosch washing machine repair I have a quite high success rate the exception being the WAA’s (the Spanish Bosch) with many broken drum spiders. Mostly simple faults ie brushes, pumps and door boots. However with Hotpoint the success rate is getting less and less, more intermittent faults-wasting time waiting for machines to go wrong and knowing full well if you leave you will be getting a call back. The ‘super silents’ seem worse displaying no error codes, the electronics are dire, the sealed drums have rubbish bearings. The build quality of the latest Bosch machines may be poorer than earlier machines but Hotpoint are rapidly becoming a lost cause.

ParticipantRe: Heard it all now!!
7o’clock last night just taking my tea out of the oven when the phone rings with a member of our local ethnic minority wanting a washing machine repair.’Tomorrow afternoon ok ‘ I say. She says ‘No you come now’. ‘Erm no’ I reply ‘tomorrow afternoon’. Phone went dead. Seems to be a lot more of this sort of thing about.

ParticipantRe: Look at what they are planning next………
A lot of things can happen in thirty years. 1984 is 30 years ago – we didnt have pcs, mobile phones, internet. Vehicle engines were inefficient. Huge leaps forward now with leds, fibre optics and digital electronics. This hysterical piece by the Daily Mail is the usual nonesense that panders to people who cant cope with change and assume what applies now will be what should apply for ever, well I’ve got news for them things will change, the market will drive a lot of it, the British Empire wont come back, and technological advances will suprise us all.
