Long interview with Whirlpool UK & Ireland Marketing Director here:

Re: Whirlpool to do a recall on Hotpoint dryers

I suspect the couple were caught up in the mass hysteria created by ITV, panicked by smell from their new appliance, didn’t trust Hotpoint to take their concern seriously, so called in an independent engineer instead. Unfortunately, it appears the engineer they called in has expertise mainly in heating and air conditioning systems rather than tumble dryer repairs, and consequently not the right person to give them the reassurance they really needed.

The engineer that appears on the clip is Mr Hossin Rabeiy of Wembley, trading as “Appliances Trader”.

I think we all know these dryers are perfectly safe to use, as long as they are maintained correctly as outlined in the instructions.

Where Whirlpool appear to have fallen short is in highlighting only the need to clean the lint filter, not specifically mentioning the condenser or outlet vent. They could at least have provided a clear illustrated guides to essential checks for people to carry out before continuing to use the machine while waiting for their modification.

I’ve always favoured Whirlpool’s reversible drum design with rollers front and back.Certainly those produced 10-15 years ago seemed very robust and the drum seals rarely leaked.

Phosphor-bronze bearings on Zanussi and Bosch seem generally robust also, perhaps due to larger diameter shafts and more generous bearing surfaces.

Do you know any dryers with ball race race bearings, Martin?

Mine came in handy as an extra present for my youngest boy, whose 11th birthday is today. The “Complimentary” label peels off without trace. Luckily, he likes maths at school, so I expect he’ll enjoy the game.

It’s a nice, touch, pretty much covering the £6.99+VAT delivery charge on my last order, and much more useful than the usual retailer catalogues and wall calendars which go straight in the bin!

The Indesit/Hotpoint Partfinder DVD is can be ordered from the Whirlpool (ex Indesit) trade spares team, £55+VAT for the 6 months ending March 2016. You don’t need to be an account holder or contractor to get it. I don’t have the direct trade spares phone number but you could try ringing the consumer sprares line on 03448 116999 and ask for the trade spares team.

As of last year, it was also possible to subscribe to the Whirlpool WeDoc online service through the old Whirlpool trade spares team, now disbanded, £120+VAT per calendar year. Again, no account or contract was required to subscribe to this. I haven’t heard about this year’s renewal but at the moment still have access.

Re: Martindale socket tester safety recall.

While a “Megger test” is well understood to mean an insulation resistance test, “Martindale test” is as eastlmark says ambiguous, and I suspect could betray a lack of understanding on the part of the wp of the tests they require. A quick Google search reveals that a Martindale test is in fact a measure of the durability of upholstery fabric.

Re: Whirlpool to do a recall on Hotpoint dryers

That looks like a rebadged Whirlpool sensor dryer. It looks like it has only just been launched and so far apparently exclusive to Whirlpool’s own Amazon marketplace outlet.

A decent upgrade for £99 I would have thought as an alternative to a free of charge repair.

Bob is right as although certification under Part P is not required for repairs, you still need to be sure your work complies with the required safety standards. Ignorance is no defence in the law.

As long as your employer’s liability insurance covers you for this work and you comply with relevant legislation, eg building regulations Part P and safe isolation procedures for proving dead and locking off supplies.

    Re: Hotpoint’s Undisclosed safety issue?

As Ken says, I am pretty sure this is the safety notice Hotpoint put up in May 2013 following the Watchdog programme on exploding drums featuring Graham Watkinson.

I suspect Electrical Safety First have only just stumbled across it while looking into the tumble dryer recall, as Hotpoint didn’t give it any publicity.
