Re: rubbish non genuine dryer capacitors

http://lastone.cn/english/ claim to have been around since 1993. Their web pictures suggest they apply silver hologram stickers to their motor capacitors. I wonder if this suggests the existence of counterfeit versions on the international marketplace which could have been picked by our wholesalers.

Plastic Surgeon Fine Finishers claim to repair most laminate worktop defects. I can’t see a picture in their gallery like yours, though, so it may be a type of damage they can’t tackle.

Re: the daft things engineer do !

Easily done. In these rural parts many people don’t lock their front doors when they are in. On one occasion, after rushing outside to the van to fetch something, I remember accidentally going back into the house next door. It all looked vaguely familiar, if strangely cluttered, until I noticed a 90-odd year old fellow quietly sitting by the fire in his chair watching the TV. Realising my mistake, I retreated quickly after blurting out “Sorry, wrong house!” With hindsight, I am not sure that was the most tactful response, and I hope it didn’t cause him too much of a shock.

If they’re reasonable, perhaps they would accept a refund with a reduction, say 20{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}, to reflect its reduced value?

If they ordered it on your premises, you are under no obligation to refund unless it is defective or you mis-sold it. If it was an off premises sale, they have a 14 day cooling off period under the consumer contracts legislation.

There may, however, be a get out if you can argue that by reversing the door it has been “customised” to his order. That is probably why the likes of Apple try to entice you with a free engraving service if you buy a device from their website, which would get them out of having to offer a 14 day cooling off period..

It turned out the pcb had failed by itself. No other parts were needed.

Not a criticism, as the new format appears to be a huge step forward visually, and maybe not a new issue, but can the spell checker be easily changed to British English from US English? (eg centre not center)

Re: Do you itemise your charges if VAT registered?

There is no legal requirement to issue a VAT invoice unless the customer is VAT registered. Even when you do, there is no need for it to be itemised (ie broken down by parts & labour), as long as it describes what the charge is for (eg repair washing machine).

The level of detail required is less if the total bill is £250 or less. In these cases, total payment and the VAT rate would be enough, plus of course date, business name & address and VAT registration number.

However, I do think showing the amount excluding VAT, the VAT amount and the total separately helps to make the charges look more reasonable. Itemising the parts and labour should also help customers appreciate the value for money they have received.

Nice illustration of Indesit’s approach to continual improvement – don’t bother to strengthen the drum, just add a flimsy top brace to contain the blast!

After a few days away, UKW forum pages have been loading in lightning speed this evening with almost no lag from social media apps. If that’s down to changes on the site, then they appear to be working!

My local Argos on Wednesday had a Bosch 6kg WAE machine on display priced at £209. This offer isn’t shown online anymore, so I guess it may have been a Black Friday weekend special.

Masterpart is very competitive on price, £60 miniumum order for free next day delivery, £40 for free 48 hour delivery. Their main disadvantage compared with Connect and Qualtex is relatively low stock levels.

Miele are booked in for next week (ouch!). I’ll report back what they find. Any suggestions on what to check in the mean time would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Whirlpool to do a recall on Hotpoint dryers

I repaired a Hotpoint vented dryer recently that had come close to causing a fire. The problem was the builder had installed an outlet vent with an integral 2mm fly screen. These are totally unsuitable for a tumble dryer outlet and block up incredibly quickly. The dust had over the years backed up in the vent hose as a plug of fluff, eventually reaching the back of the dryer and then filling the dryer’s front to rear duct.

Of course, by this stage, hardly any dust was collecting in the filter, as it was being forced out of the front and rear drum seals and into the outer cabinet. A fair amount of dust had also been deposited behind the dryer. Luckily, the user had noticed a burning smell and stopped using it before a fire took hold. The customer’s only fault had been to ignore a gradually deteriorating drying performance and an increase in condensation in the room.

I imagine this kind of extreme situation has caused fires in the past. In this case, not through lack of maintenance by the user, but the fitting of an unsuitable outlet vent by the builder. Similar problems can be caused by crushed vent hoses behind the dryer.

Yes, we have all seen the occasional fluff filter with 50 or more layers of different coloured fluff, but I suspect, for vented dryers, problems with venting are the main causes of fires, not blocked filters. For this reason, I always check the outlet vent, regardless of the repair I have carried out, remove any unsuitable fly screen and check the air flow.

Condenser dryers are of course easier to neglect. It is surprising how many customers don’t even know the condenser exists – or subsequently forget to clean it. Even when they do, the integral front duct makes the Hotpoint condensers stupidly hard to clean – a major design weakness. For this reason, I always check the condenser, regardless of the repair I have done, by checking how much light passes through. If it’s more than 30{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} blocked, I’ll make sure to clean it out.
