Yes, stats never lie, but they can be misused! The factor I overlooked in my analysis was of course exports. A high proportion of those 1.2 million dryers per year may have gone overseas.
A quick google news search for “Indesit trockner” (German) reveals the recall indeed appears to be Europe wide.

This UKW article from 2004 suggests annual production of 1.2 million tumble dryers per year at Yate:
An undated document by a university placement student appears to back this up:
http://ime.lboro.ac.uk/assets/docs/casestudy_indesit.pdf
So I would guess over the 11 years since 2004 between 10 and 15 million units would have been produced, of which the unaffected 3kg dryers must be a small fraction.
If an average lifespan of 6 years is assumed, that would suggest in the region of 6 to 8 million still in the field. So I would assume the 1.6 million figure mentioned earlier relates to the number of units they expect to reach, in the region of 10{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of those produced and 20{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of those still in use.

Am I right in thinking this affects all Indesit/Hotpoint/Creda dryers from 2004, ie the CTD/VTD range and equivalents onwards?
It’s reassuring to know that something good has come out of the Whirlpool/Indesit merger. Perhaps Whirlpool are more in touch with their corporate values (of which “Integrity” is their 2nd).
It’s not a great endorsement of the Indesit UK manufacturing operation not to have addressed the issue in 11 years of production, even though they must have been aware of a potential issue from Fire Service and engineer reports over many years. I wonder to what extent the Italians were in control of the design and development of these dryers, essentially evolutions of the old Creda/Hotpoint design.

I’ve come across at least one of these with a faulty float microswitch.

Whirlpool made profit of $650 million in 2014, around 3{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of turnover, so 0.2{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of turnover wouldn’t be that much of a hit for Whirlpool globally.

A major issue for Whirlpool in the UK, yes, but globally I don’t think it will be a major issue for Whirlpool. The sale valued Indesit at around £700 million. With a recall rate of 20{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} on 1.6 million machines, even a full economic cost repair of say £100 per modified machine would only work out at around £30 million, roughly 0.2{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of Whirlpool’s global annual turnover. Unless 1.6 million relates to UK only and there are more machines exported overseas.

I’ve seen a few burnt rear seals on the vented version, and often up to an inch of compressed dust accumulated inside it, but none where a fire had taken hold. Polyurethane foam right behind the heater does seem a daft design, when you think about it.

Over the last few months, I experience typical delays in loading UKW forum pages of 10 or 20 seconds, and sometimes a minute or two. I suspect the delays are associated with the social networking apps on the site, as I often see messages in the bottom left of my Chrome browser saying things like “Waiting for cdn.syndication.twitter.com”.
Does anyone else experience this kind of performance? It may well be an issue specific to my Google Chrome setup, but Whitegoods is the only site on which I have this problem. While pages are loading, all navigation tools (scrolling, hyperlinks, forward and back buttons, etc) remain inactive, so navigation through the forums is painfully slow.

Smeghead, do you use Worldpay’s SaferPayments online self-assessment questionnaire? If so, it’s worth going through your questionnaire again. My recollection is the questionnaire is a bit of a minefield and you have to choose your answers very carefully. As far as I know you are only charged for the service once per year, not every time you update the questionnaire.
My setup is similar to yours – mobile terminal with SIM card – and they’ve not asked to scan my computer.

T&Cs for Yell print advertising are here:
http://marketing.hibu.co.uk/legal/yp-terms/
The relevant section seems to be:
“8.4 Except as set out in Condition 8.1 above, and subject to Condition 4.1.4, if we make an error in or omission from, or of, an Advertisement you shall be entitled to a refund of such part (not exceeding the whole) of the charge for the Advertisement concerned as is fair and reasonable having regard to the nature of the error or omission. If we make a serious error or omission (which we shall determine, at our sole discretion), we may, in addition to giving a refund, publish or arrange the publication of a similar correct Advertisement free of charge in the next edition of the Directory concerned.”
So you should get at least a partial refund.
However, they might try this get-out clause:
“4.1.4 You may elect to telephone a request for an Amendment before the Final Amendment Date to our Customer Service telephone number. If you do this, or request an Amendment through our sales representative, we will not accept any liability for the accuracy of the subsequently amended Advertisement and we may decline to accept the Amendment.”
That would seem to me an unfair term, effectively declining any liability for failings by their customer service or sales representatives.

Ah, 13 million tumble dryers in total, that makes perfect sense. As a former government statistician I have a keen interest in the use and misuse of statistics!
My figures for total households came from the 2014 Labour Force Survey, the figures on tumble dryer ownership from the ONS Living Costs and Food Survey 2010, both relating to UK as a whole. The DECC figures are from the 2011 Energy Follow up Survey, which relates to England only.

ParticipantRe: Whirlpool to do a recall on Hotpoint dryers
Wait a minutes, 13 million in the field? There are 27 million households in the UK, and according to ONS, only 57{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of them own a tumble dryer. That suggests maybe 15-16 million tumble dryers in the UK in total. So maybe somewhere between 2 and 5 million affected Hotpoint/Indesit dryers would be closer to the mark?
Perhaps they should tackle it with busloads of engineers calling door to door!

But with typical recall rates of only 10-20{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}, management and shareholders will not be too worried…?

ParticipantRe: Alternative to a van.
These new Michelin CrossClimate all-season tyres are apparently the ones to beat for all round use in typical UK climate:
A class for wet grip, C class for energy use and, according to Auto Bild tests, 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the grip of winter tyres on snow.
4WD may give greater traction than 2WD on snow and ice, but 4WD will offer no help with braking. The two extra wheels double the traction, but I guess this effect is less than the increased coefficient of friction offered by winter tyres in cold conditions.
In the Auto Express video, the 4WD car with summer tyres is no match for the 2WD version with winter tyres, embarrassingly sliding back down the slope when the traction is lost.

I think it may be grey. The official “Business Companion” website gives the following definition of a distance contract.
A contract made between a trader and a consumer where they are not together, which is negotiated and agreed by one or more organised means of distance communication – for example, by phone, post or over the internet. There must be an organised distance scheme for selling goods and/or services so the Regulations are unlikely to affect a business that sells a product at a distance as a one-off. For instance, a knitting wool shop that does not normally sell at a distance would not fall within the definition of a distance contract when a customer rings to ask for a ball of wool to be posted to him because he is unable to call into the shop – this is unlikely to be classed as an ‘organised’ distance selling scheme.
Unless the difference between spare part and a ball of wool is relevant…
