ParticipantRe: Should we Refund
A bit of a grey area, I think. On the face of it, this was a distance sale, as you took the order and payment over the phone.
However, you may be able to argue that this was a one off order in response to a specific customer request, rather than a typical mail order or internet sale, so not subject to the consumer contracts legislation. This would be easier to argue if you don’t generally provide or advertise a mail order service.
If so, there would be no automatic cancellation period, just the usual consumer rights that apply when you buy goods from a shop.

ParticipantRe: Trade Spares Suppliers poor service
BSH have 1 programmed module in UK stock, part no 00659151, list price £127.23 + VAT, 15{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} trade discount by phone, free postage.
Connect in particular seem to be going for margin rather than volume in recent months, notably for Bosch, with many SRPs at silly money, way over list price.
It is now more important than ever to compare prices before buying.

ParticipantRe: Costco selling Hotpoint appliances
Partfinder information suggests that the latest Hotpoint FDUD dishwashers and RPD washing machines I think you are referring to are still 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} Indesit design. I imagine some colourful discussions at the moment between the two Italian R&D teams no doubt under pressure to rationalise their product technologies over the next few years.

ParticipantRe: whirlpool taking over indesit
I took delivery today of my first Whirlpool part from Peterborough and was surprised to see it re-branded as an Indesit/Hotpoint part, complete with C00… part number. So, it appears the Indesit Company is now named Whirlpool, but Whirlpool parts are for now being branded as Indesit/Hotpoint. Oh, and the part is for a machine branded Maytag!

ParticipantRe: whirlpool taking over indesit
Whirlpool parts distribution moved to Peterborough last week, I’ve been told, so consolidation is clearly taking shape.
Partfinder is a bit of a relic now, often seeming out of sync and presumably quite expensive to maintain. Migration to Whirlpool’s WeDoc system could be in the pipeline, I guess, although I can’t see them transferring the historical stuff across.
It will be interesting to see which side wins on product technology. I’m already anticipating some nostalgia for the humble smart card!

ParticipantRe: fitted new door seal to beko washing machine
I would have thought a free recall to check the seal would be reasonable if it’s only three weeks since you did the job. Obviously, if it is clear the customer damaged the seal, he would have to pay again if he wanted you to repair it again. Did you charge him up front first time round? If not, it could come across as obstructive to demand cash up front this time.
If feasible, pop back and check it for yourself. Otherwise, ask the customer to email a photo of the hole. Then you will be in a better position to assess the cause. For example, some customers notice the drain hole at the bottom of the door seal and assume this is the cause of the leak.

ParticipantRe: How does ‘Cashback’ work?
I don’t know the answer, but either way, a canny alternative to reducing the price, and more profitable for both I suspect. Having participated in one of these recently (cashback on ink if you buy printer and ink together), I guess a high {e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of people persuaded to hand over their cash don’t pursue their claim, failing to comply with strict rules and timescales set out in the terms and conditions.

ParticipantRe: Vehicle
THe most tax effective way to run an estate would probably be to finance it privately and claim 45p per mile from your business (reducing to 25p per mile after the first 10,000 miles each year), the standard HMRC mileage allowance which is tax free.

ParticipantRe: Advice needed
Lee8, for someone passionate about about qualifications and standards, I am surprised you were willing to leave the machine in a potentially dangerous condition, allowing access to live parts without the use of tools, a clear breach of product safety standards.

ParticipantRe: why cant they make them like this anymore ?
Aren’t the Indesit IS41V and Hotpoint V4D01 pretty much the same machine? OK, the rear bearings might wear out more quickly and the capacitors might not be as stable, but I bet a handful of these current models will still be around in 30 years time.

ParticipantRe: Miele W3830 Paragon Plus
Thanks Phil for your input. I contacted my customer to book a further visit to check the outlet breather hoses, but he reported the machine is, at least for now, working perfectly.

ParticipantRe: Miele W3830 Paragon Plus
Thanks both for your suggestions.
Martin – I think the pump will be hot as it stays on for hours. Do you remember What the solution was?
chitts – I’ve already cleaned the pressure chamber (drum to pressure sensor, which was blocked solid) and checked the top breather hose (drum to dispenser, which was clear). Is there another breather that could be blocked and causing the pump to over-run?

ParticipantRe: True or false?
Martin, the type of cable used to connect a cooker is fundamental to the integrity of the installation, and one aspect of the installation most certainly the responsibility the installer, so surely it is reasonable to discuss that issue on the same thread?

ParticipantRe: True or false?
I’ll trust Jem on this. Anyone who can quote from all three of the latest 3 editions of the wiring regs should know what they are talking about! Mine was the 15th edition (Green), bought around 1983, probably for around £10.

ParticipantRe: True or false?
I remember when installing an AEG oven in my first house (back in 1992, before Part P) ordering in a short length of 6mm flex from my local wholesaler who didn’t hold stock. it was many times the price of T&E, but I felt the cost was worthwhile as the installation instructions specified flex and it felt much more durable.
However, lifted from the IET forum (posted 2010, so not necessarily still current):
Reg 521.9.2 “Stationary equipment which is moved temporarily for the purposes of connecting, cleaning etc., e.g. a cooker or a flush-mounting unit for installations in a false floor, may be connected with a non-flexible cable but if subject to vibration in use shall be connected by a flexible cable or cord.”
