    Re: Free Estimates

    Hi all
Im sorry to say I have to give free quotes & I hate it
Some days you go out do several jobs & get no money at all
You get some who call you out get your estimate then do it themselves & have the cheek to call you again for the same appliance 2 or 3 times in that year & do the same thing again.
The problem is when I was made redundant 7 years ago there was and still is 2 other guys covering the same villages as myself, they both give free estimates.
I must admit I only do a 5 mile radius of my house and am busy enough.
Mostly the only estimates not accepted are the expensive ones around £130 for wm £150 for cookers.
With new appliance prices dropping like flys, I forsee problems.
(I no longer call to people who p**s me about.)

    Re: Local Trading Standards Authority

    Hi all
rang bedfordshire trading standards 3 weeks ago.
was told not in till after weekend they would call me on monday
    nothing
Tryed ringing them 5 times since, always on the phone but told I would get a call soon as poss.
Just spoke to them today 😀
Told you dont call me just need me just send the form in.
( was told to call her first )
They seem keen when you talk to them, £120.00 + vat here though.

The thing is, there is a list of musts, the top of the list is “you must call back customer one same day of contact”.
And you must call within 3 days.

All I can asume is that trading stndards are not on their own list. 8)

    Re: Hotpoint WMA Spider Bolts

    Hi all
Did a wma bearing change last week.
I noticed the spider only had 3 bolts on it, 1 one each arm.
Has anyone else come across this and what are your thoughts on reliability because of it.
seemed solid enough but the bearings had failed, but nothing new there though.
Could this be why Qualtex sell kits of 3 ❓

Re: Earth Loop Testing after repair

personally i feel, on every job I go to I must
1 test loop impeadance at socket out-let, inc built in polarity test.
2 earth loop test on appliance, ie multitester from earth on plug to exposed case.
3 sometimes on old appliances i use remote probe on loop tester to case but must be on rear as somtimes it sparkes and damages case.
I do this for my own peace of mind and for insurance puposes noting the reading on my and customers sheet.

    Re: Late or what !

    Tricky or what?
I have a spare drum at home which I recon myself in my spare time with sometimes just bearings £10 sometimes other parts needed.
Then when I get the call I take this box with me and do the tub change on the spot.
Takes about 1hr now I have done a few.
price I charge depends on how bad their drum is, just noisy £95, loads of up/down movment £110.
6 months g’tee no problems so far.
Am I wronge to do this? I dont go to a job, give a quote and then say “the next guy in the yellow pages would do it £20 less” do I.
I think this is ok to do because we all know how much work is involved in bearing extraction on these.
But should I feel guilty about the customers bank accounts.
or as my old dads says “average wage is now £18’000 what do you earn my boy?”

    Re: Late or what !

Does that include call out and labour
must be more than that, or can they change a drum in 30 mins ❓
1 thing to consider is my wifes lust of shoes, some of which, foolishly, i buy
