    Re: Part P effect?

    Reference Scotland and part “P”

As it is in England and Wales, Scotland does not Apply it.

BUT new regulations came into force in May 2005 regarding Electrical installations in Buildings.

    Information can be found on:-
http://www.sbsa.gov.uk or on the NICEIC website http://www.niceic.org.uk

    Re: Taking on new staff

If you employ him it will mean:

vehicle, spares, tools, insurance etc oh! and a contract of employment. Whether you have work or not you will have to pay him including holiday entitlement.
This will cost you twice what you pay him.

If you look at using him on a self employed basis:

He supplies the vehicle insurance tools etc. carries all the liabilities.
Draws spares from you dependent on the work for that day/s. then accounts for them at the end.
This costs you a percentage of the completed job labour rate only.
If you have insufficient work you do not use him that week or day.
Calls are booked as you would book any other engineer.

Hopefully being retired he will not be looking for a formal employment contract. which will be of less hassle for you.

I have used both methord in the past and found the self employed the least hassle, You do though have to trust the person.
    Good luck

    Re: apprentice

If you take on a 16 year old there are level one training certificates, produced by the Electrical and Electronic Services Training Council, which includes DASA, are fully funded and backed by the DFES, LSC and Business link. These have been operating in the Midlands this year at 118 centres, as a trial before rolling out in April 2006 to the rest of the country.

As for help in paying wages Business Link would be the best people to talk to as they along with the Local Skills Council have access to several funds, including E.U money.

    Further information is available from
    the DFES web site http://www.dfes.gov.uk

    Re: Tax question

Phidom with your car you are probobly doing right, but also allow some oncosts for the things like wear and tear on tyres and engine. the additional insurance for business use etc.

goosegreen where a van is concerned all expenditure is tax deductable, except private mileage, this assumes you have no other private vehicle.

I understand this all changes next April, but still not sure how it applies to micro businesses that are vehicle dependent.

    Re: Tax question

I had the same question a couple of years back and my accountant adviced this.

Assuming you are self employed, as opposed to a limited company, you are better to borrow the money off a third party, could be wife/partner, so long as they are not directors, as any of your own money paid into your business, will be seen by inland revenue as income and attract tax.

Make an agreement between yourselves in writting. You can then show the repayments as an out going in your accounts.

    Hope this helps.

Blomberg a German Appliance maker, good when solvent. Purchased by Ocean, Then sold in the UK by Comet on sole franchise.
Spares only available from Comet at an exorbitant price. Best left to Comet for repair.

Well done Kevin season off good will and you stir the s##t again, I wonder what skeletons are in your cupboard.

The DASA members list was poached off the old site, as a stop gap,(look at the date), as there where other more important things to get done when CH left us owing to his health.
When the current round of renewals have been returned, then the list will be updated, so make the most of still being on the list, it may not last much longer.

Do not forget that part of your defence in a County Court can be a counter claim for what they owe you.

We did that to Inland Revenue and National Trust, one settled out of court including our legal fees. The other one took it all the way and lost, court added in our legal fees and loss of a days earnings.

FSB would like to know sooner rather than later, because if you can use them, and you go to far down the road on your own, they may not be able to.

    Good luck

    Re: Federation of Small Businesses?

Wanted to but have been unable to answer until now. I have just undergone an IR + VAT investigation. Not uncommon when you sell a business you were the sole proprietor of or retire. The cost to me Three phone calls, To inform FSB of inquiry,Answer a question, and say thank you.
During my 15 year membership I saved my fees every year with good vehicle insurance rates. Sound advice on legal matters ie My wife was offered TUPE in her part time job, and given a load of mis-leading information.FSB were asked to clarify position instead they took over negotiations and got a much better deal for all the staff.
Also by attending branch meetings, the links forged, the information passed around.
Last point I have done two Jury duties. A payment is claimable from FSB to cover your lost income. Thats if you cannot get out of it.
There are other benifits which I am sure others can supply.
As for me when I retire I will transfer to the retired section and maintain
My protection against a government (and they are all the same)which hate the self employed

I think HSE require it to be done, but at present can not find the HSE guide, given out and distributed to all DASA members about 18/24 months ago. When I do I will give you the guide number.
