BlockedRe: 0800 Repair
Following on again…
Which one does the consumer rely on?
I’d guess DASA…?! As they are more bonafide than 0800 Repair…!
However, the engineer / franchisee / whatever might not be a DASA Member…!
What happens then?
Do DASA take on the problem, even if it’s not a DASA Member but they’ve been paid a huge amount to carry them? Or do they refer the consumer back to 0800 Repair as the repairer wasn’t a DASA Member? Where 0800 Repair might use the Code of Conduct…? But the consumer thought the repairer was a DASA Member as per 0800 Repairs website…?
What a deceiving web…!

If you as a consumer look at 0800 Repair, you can see clearly:

Then you can see the DASA Code of Practice by clicking the link below:
http://www.dasa.org.uk/code-of-practice
But it differs from the 0800 Code of Conduct below…! Which one does the consumer believe 😕

BlockedRe: 0800 Repair
Before I start, please let me assure you that this is not a DASA Bashing post. I have had little to do with DASA bar a membership that I declined to renew after feeling somewhat ‘Let down’ by their ‘Arbitration’ approach… (I believe it went something like this… Ade, can you get this sorted ASAP as the customer is not happy. End of phone call)…! As a mere appliance repairer, I joined DASA years ago as I wanted to be better than the rest, or at least try and be a part of something that held ‘Weight’ in the industry. When they were called upon (After taking my money), they were, for the want of a better word… Useless! <— And that was MY experience of DASA before someone wants to try and question why this was written… FACT.
Anyways, moving on and back on topic… One thing that has jumped in to my lap from this thread, is the fact that 0800 Repair advertise being DASA Members, which they are. Now… That would indicate to a consumer looking on their site, that they are protected to a degree as the engineer they employ will be bound by DASAs COP etc etc etc. However… Is this the case…?
Again from a consumer point of view, if a consumer employs 0800 Repair to carry out a repair, and the Franchisee / JTM Agent (As they use JTM to cover areas with no franchisees) and the repairer turns out to be, shall we say less than good, does the consumer have grounds to approach DASA to complain? As the visiting engineer may not be a DASA member…?! So DASA has no ‘Power’ to contact the visiting engineer as they may get told to do one?
I’ve sent an email to 0800 Repair asking to clarify this issue (02/08)… I had an email back to say they’d get back to me within 24 hours. No reply as yet :rolls:
After my recent experience with dealing with different Trade Associations throughout the UK in many varying trades, I’m quite surprised that 0800 Repair are allowed to advertise that they are DASA Members, without making it clear to the consumer that they are ‘Associate Members’ and NOT all 0800 Repair Franchisees are members of DASA.
Ok… Now you might ask… Well, they are joined to DASA upon starting the Franchise. So, 0800 Repair vet DASA Members now? Is the annual fee from the 0800 Repair Franchisee to DASA included in the Franchise contract? Is DASA Membership a part of the T&C’s to become an 0800 Repair Franchisee? Are JTM Engineers that fill in the blanks members? Do 0800 Repair pay a large amount to get all Franchisees listed as members? If so, do the Franchisees agree or even know about this? Jeez the questions keep going and there are about 30 I’d like answered, hence my email to 0800 Repair last week.
To sum up before I end up taking 15 Pages of UKW’s Forum, it’s wrong. Totally wrong.
As a member of the WTA Council, if I was asked if a repair company could advertise membership which will give the consumer confidence when choosing a repairer, whilst some of their agents are not WTA Members, I’d say ‘Nada… No way… See ya’…!

mikeday0800 wrote:Just spoke to a comet engineer. They are on 28 day contracts. And there all in price repair only generates 2 calls a day for him. And now there upping the price to £150. Good luck with that comet.
Best of luck to the engineers though. My thought are with you.
Sounds like your Comet engineer friend is misleading you 😉Less than 5 Miles away from my unit is a Comet repair depot. It’s not a store, it’s a dedicated warehouse for engineers / call centre / spares etc. As it happens, I used to work from there before I went solo and I see a few of them occasionally in the cafe on the estate 😉
28 Day contract might apply to any subbies they might use, IIRC, they asked me to do some sub work for them about 5 years ago, but I declined due to rates. However, for employed engineers… Nah!
Totally off topic I admit, but Mike, make sure you secure the screw driver to the roof of your van as I believe the riots are spreading nationwide now. And that thing won’t last 2 minutes if seen by a crowd 🙂

BlockedRe: Gas Safe Inspector
Sorry… Just re-read your post and I’m now reading it in a different way!
Ok, he’s correct. To carry out ‘Gas Work’, you have to be qualified & registered. Although your Gas Safe Engineer signs the paperwork, it’s not him doing the work. So technically, your engineer is carrying out work he isn’t allowed to do in peoples homes.
IIRC, Gas Safe will say that you should give practical training to trainees on ‘Rigs’, in a training environment.
I’d still ring your local assessment center and ask though, it may be that you could send him there for half or a day a week to ‘Train’ on the rigs. If not, it’s as you say… “how on earth is a trainee ever going to get the real world experience needed to do the job properly?”

Hi Jackal,
I’d say there isn’t anything wrong with one of your employees training another! Sounds odd to me…! I’ve just had a scout about & there isn’t anything I can find that’s ‘Definitive’, so if it were me, I’d ‘Ignore’ the Inspector (In a nice way) and ask my local assessment center tomorrow what their criteria is for a Cat 3 CCN1 New applicant. They’ll straighten it out I’m sure.

BlockedRe: WTA July 2011 Council Meeting Kili
I think we should spend Thursday evening going back in time! We should go back to that night in Sibson when the WTA was just a thought and re-visit what we said, what we wanted and what was important to us as we began the WTA.
I remember being mighty exited about the OFT! That to me was a huge deal that would secure the WTAs ‘Stature’ within the trade. A lot of effort went in to that, from the development of the code, to the trips to London… Where is it now?
Basically, I’m saying before we talk about ID Cards, spares discounts etc… Should we get back on track regarding a ‘Biggie’? I.e OFT Approval or even Trustmark etc if the OFT is dead? Personally, I think we need something there to back us up as a small TA.
The TA Forums. We should join. I mentioned it a few months back but nothing has been pursed. We can then be listed on there as a TA, and attend there conferences etc if we feel that we would benefit by meeting other TAs throughout the UK. Also from what I gather, government people also attend the TA Forum conferences, so it might be worth a thought? At the end of the day, it’s a Logo that we can add to the WTA Website and it’s another new story to go on the homepage “WTA Become TA Forum members” 😉
I for one would hope, that if we agree the WTA is pursuable, then any changes we decide Friday, are actually done on Friday or very soon afterwards by the nominated person. As things sometimes get forgotten about when we leave Kilmarnock IMO, and we are talking about the same thing the next time we meet!
For what it’s worth, my gut feeling is the WTA could be huge. We could achieve so much if we all stay motivated, have the right members on the council, keep in touch, keep focused and ‘Allocate’ a set few hours every week to commit to WTA work.
Other than that, I’m looking forward to seeing you all on Thursday!

Rooms booked for me, Barrie, Stephen & Lawrence. £75PN.
We need to pay on arrival… Will be be re-imbursed by WTA Funds on the Friday for rooms and travel? If so, I’m presuming we need to bring fuel / air ticket receipts & and the Invoice for the rooms? We can get the Hotel to Invoice the WTA for the rooms, even though we’re paying on arrival?

Hi guys…
Yeah it seems that when it gets to temperature, it shuts down and will not restart unless you power down. End result is unit warms up, alarm sounds, customer powers down and back on then unit runs again… It’s defo a weird one!
