If you want to start doing refrigeration, including the regasing etc, you’ll need a safe-handling certificate. Safe Handling of Refrigerants (C&G 2078)
City and Guilds to Level 3 (now replaced by NVQ III in either Refrigeration or Air Conditioning).welsh__boy
ParticipantRe: no phone line on new computer
If you can log onto the internet via a broadband connection this probably means you don’t have a modem that can connect to the phone line like you want to. A broadband modem isn’t like the old modems that used dial-up to get on t’internet.

All you can do is make sure that your anti-virus/firewall and windows are up to date. Is the BT firewall on your PC or on thier server? May be worthwhile either using XPs firewall or investing in another one.

ParticipantRe: Dishwasher Engineers 2??
I have to agree with Kheath’s point. I’m sure many of us had different careers before this current one. Myself, I am university qualified, but who cares as long as you can fix the equipment you’ve been asked to. I work mainly on commercial and industrial machines, does this make me more qualified to call myself an ‘engineer’ than somebody working on domestic whitegoods, hell no. In principle the machines are the same, only some are bigger than the others. In my experience, there is nothing better than good old experience in the field, the classroom just can’t prepare you for everything that can be thrown at you.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Homer Simpson a nuclear engineer? I’m sure he’s got the qualifications to prove it.

ParticipantRe: Hot and Cold Fill Hoses
NO, was in one of the rugby clubs around Llanelli, he came to work for us repairing commercial machines for a while, he’s back on the domestics now, god help his customers, that’s all I can say.

ParticipantRe: Whirlpool k20 icemaker.
May have one somewhere in the workshop, but in the meantime, if there’s anything you need to know just send me a message. Easy machines to use, just make sure nobody presses the blue button in!!

ParticipantRe: Hot and Cold Fill Hoses
An ex-employee once had a leaking hose connection, so instead of either changing the rubber washer, or adding another one to make a good seal, he put a plastic bag around the connection, taped the top and bottom and walked away!! The same engineer was also a big fan of self-cutting (self-tapping) taps, and he put a self-tapper right onto a customers central heating return. Needless to say he doesn’t work for us anymore.

ParticipantRe: Peristaltic pumps?
Yip, they’re for commercial machines. Our current supplier has really let us down, so hopefully try and find a new supplier.

Had a call out to a customer to repair a dishwasher and had a quick glance at her icemachine, a NiceIce N20, I’m sure it’s a Polar machine, have a look at

They also supply spares for the machine.

Just wondering if you had any joy with the parts?

Maybe a hairdrier would be a safer option, saying that though, a lot of the gases used in refrigereation aren’t combustable, I’m pretty sure you can put a match to R134a and it won’t light, mind you, it’s late and I may be wrong!!! I’m not clued up on Candy equipment, are there any fans that should be going? Is it stuck in a defrost? The drier on the gas line may be blocked or a small gas leak? I doubt it is a gas leak because the customer said it was icing up in the morning, which to me would suggest that there is enough gas in it, hot gas coil could be out of order. I don’t know if these parts are on the Candy equipment, but they’re on most refrigeration stuff.
Hope it helps.

There’s a company called GW Refrigeration +44 (0)1924 848100, they supply the machines, but there’s a cracking company called ACME refrigeration, (01254) 277999 very good for spares. Icematic do a N25, not heard of a N26, but seems to similar to be a coincidence. Another company who supply the paddle systems is Project Distribution, I know they used to do the ones with the microswitch system, so I’m assuming they’d do the newer design, 01782 280289. I haven’t got any number for Icematic on my phone, but will have a good look tomorrow in the office. Myself, I’d go to Acme and Project first as they’re good companies, but then again, GW actually supply the machines, not sure what prices their spares are though!!!

ParticipantRe: ice maker spares
When you say ‘rotational inspection sensor’ do you mean the microswitch located on the left hand side? There’s a motor with a large(ish) circular piece of plastic with a notch cut out? The ice is bell shaped with the frozen prongs pointing down? White paddles and normally mostly blue plastic around the inside? If this is the machine and it is the microswitch I’ll get the relevant phone number and part number tomorrow if you let me know.
