Re: British Gas To Drop Appliance Servicing?

I think you’ve got the wrong end of the stick, I got this username from the previous user months ago. I’m what’s known as a silver surfer and try to keep all usernames the same and when I noticed it had been taken, simply asked if he’d consider swapping. If I remember he didn’t use the site much and offered it straight to me. My opinion still stands as the ‘engineer’ we got rid of WAS hopeless, and a reference wasn’t asked for until after he had taken up employment. I think you’ll notice in the rant that I didn’t say there was anything wrong with him personally, just your routine for collecting references isn’t what I’d consider thorough.

Have found out it was not earthed. Would this make the Martindale tester show no neutral? If so why?

    Re: generator question?

I couldn’t say. Would that make a difference with a deisel generator? Having never used or looked at one I wouldn’t know if he should or not. I’ll ask and he can test it again with and without earthing it.

Driver probably did it for a quick buck. £5 or £10 in his back pocket, thank-you very much. Imagine how much extra cash the drivers could make in a day!! Also, if asked he’ll only deny it.

    Re: Customers Attitudes

With my company, if we get an abusive customer we just pack our tools and walk away, making sure the machine is safe first mind. Mostly commercial premises, so if they want it repaired they can phone the office and hope we haven’t driven too far away or it’ll be the next day at the earliest for the repair to be completed. We’re paid to repair machines not to take abuse from customers. Any complaints, we tell them to phone the office.

    Re: washing machine in garage

At the end of the day he’s discharging his waste water onto your property which is a no-no, shouldn’t be done. For example, what if he worked in a chemical factory and his clothes were saturated with pesticides or worse, these chemicals would then be ‘in the open’ as it were. First thing’s first, talk to the bloke, he may not have thought about it and as soon as you mention it he’ll sort it out. Next write a formal (ish) letter to him stating your concerns then if that fails goto the council and environmental agency. If he doesn’t sort it out after a polite word or a letter then there’s nothing else you can do but report him. Or you could alter the plumbing in your bathroom and reroute your toilet pipework to his garden. Happy days.

I’ve just gone back to normal headphones from bluetooth, battery doesn’t last long enough for me during the day, real pain when it cuts out halfway through a call.

    Re: commercial appliances

If you time your run right, you can get to ‘good’ places around dinner time for free lunch. I’d have to say that I’d prefer commercial stuff to domestic. Most machines are easier to work on, the parts are easier to get to on the machine, but as mentioned before, technical help is rare but parts are readily available.

You forgot to mention the filthy cellars, attics, back store rooms and cubby holes these machines are located in. Buried under heaps of laundry, beer barrels, crates of baked beans and tomato ketchup, or in a sweatshop alleyway between the busy kitchen and bar. No-one you ask either knows what machine is faulty or what the fault is?

Ahhh the commercial world is an exciting challenge for sure. 🙁

And the cold cellars when you’re working on ice-makers with the blowers right in front of you, freezing your knackers off. Working on an appliance in the kitchen when it’s in full flow, hot liquids splashing on you, staff kicking you, sweating like a pig. And god yes, most machines are so tightly boxed in it’s impossible to pull out or work on. I love my job

    Re: commercial appliances

To be honest most of the commercial machines in pubs, clubs and hotels are single phase, you’ll get a 3 phase machine now and again, but not often and these are usually in the larger establishments. In my opinion, if you know the basics of a dishwasher, washing machine etc you should be able to work your way around commercial machines. The commercial machines tend to be easier to work on because they are built to be regularly serviced and tend to have more room to work in, there are exceptions to the rule of course. From my experience the main difference is the customer themself, a commercial customer will often demand the machine is working ASAP, often having senior management on your back asking why you don’t carry 3 tonnes of spare parts on your vehicle, or why you didn’t call 5 minutes after they called you in the middle of the night.
If you run into any problems or just need a bit of advice feel free to get back to me. Or if you feel I’ve missed something out here.
    Cheers,
    Chris

    Re: Guarantee’s

From what I gather the part supplied must work for a reasonable amount of time and the cost of the item also comes into play. For example, you wouldn’t take a lightbulb back to Woolworths if it blew after 2 days, even more so if you didn’t have the receipt. Also, if the part is an expensive part you would expect a longer guarantee due to the cost of the item. Some of our suppliers only give a guarantee when the part is over £100, and even then only for 6 months time IF the part is fitted to their standards. Other suppliers offer a years guarantee no questions asked. Peronally I believe you’re spot on with 6 months, you don’t know how it was installed, even if they bought it from you if there’s no proof of purchase.

A good company for EGO regulators is CRPC on 01793 603425 or 0845 2220025. They should be able to match the EGO number for you.
