Cancel a booking at the last minute as the machine’s working again

Bosch dishwasher anti-flood system activated. They’d had a blockage under the sink which had caused a flood. Arranged that day to call between 12 and 1.

15 mile journey to customer’s house, parked on her drive on the dot of 1, just getting out of van, a text comes through from my office, no need to call any more, machine working again. Rang the bell, smiling customer says someone should be getting in touch soon, no need to come in as machine working fine.

“Well, I may as well come in and do a basic electrical check, just in case water got into the electrics.” No, she’d rather not, as then she’d then have to pay the call-out charge. Well, as I’m already here, I’ll have to charge you anyway.” “OK, you may as well come in.”

Found slimline integrated dishwasher tilted precariously to the rear, bottom of door sticking out around 2 inches, top of dishwasher ripped from worktop fixings. “At least I’ll be able to line that up for you properly, not good for dishwashers not to be level.”

“That was the people who lived here before, they put the kitchen in.” Funny that, I thought, everything else in the kitchen lines up nicely. I suspected she’d looked on the internet after I had spoken to her and thought she’d try tipping the water out.

Anyway, I adjusted the feet, and sure enough, the anti-flooding system activated again. Sucked out most of the water, insulation test OK. Tied up drain hose to prevent further backflow from sink. I got no thanks from the customer, but she paid without quibble.

A familiar tale, havnt had a doorstep standup as such for a while but almost every week i get last min cancellations because ‘The neighbour, uncle , bloke down the pub or whatever, had a look & ‘fixed it’.. drives me nuts it does.

The worst of it is its usually the jobs you’ve spent an age talking to, telling them the likely fault, cost, then getting 10 mins worth of directions on how to find their place, etc, etc.. PEOPLE!! 👿

The job would be much easier without em..

I had to refuse a job today on a Hotpoint WF860. It was showing F01, motor triac fault so I had gone armed with an old module I could raid for its triac. As most of you will know, these WF models with the Indesit module sitting in the base are a $od to work on at the best of times. This one was in a tiny utility room where you could just about get it out from under the worktop but there was no room for me and the machine because there was also a huge Megaflow water heater in the way. The only way to have done the job would be to disconnect the machine and lift it over the worktop past the offending water heater. 😯

Interesting little job the other day, built in freezer faulty. When trying to remove it from the units I found it jammed solid, further inpection found that some pillock had screwed the freezer to the side by side fridge, so I had to drag both appliance out together. Moved them 6 inches and they both dropped to the floor 😕 Finaly got them out and found that they had been propped up on various thicknesses of scrap wood.

I repaired the frezeer and advised the customer to get a carpenter in to make a proper base, there was no way that I could get the blocks of wood back under, it was obvious that they had been installed before the worktop was fitted. Worst part of this story was that the customer was “most disapointed” that I could not get the freezer back in 👿 I pointed out that I had hurt my back pulling the freezer out and in reality I should not have attempted it, 🙁

It is amazing the faith people have in their appliances.. machines entombed by inch thick flooring, boilers, rads, etc, etc.. such dissapointment on their little faces when you explain that a joiner, plumber, or a heating engineer will have to clear the decks first.. twits. :rolls:

It is rarely the ‘people’ to blame, its the brain dead, stupid idiot kitchen fitters 95{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the time. 😈

    Agreed.

I’ve had several where the appliances have been ‘installed’ very tight, and then the floor tiler has come and done the floor. :rolls:

    Gameover, walk away.

Re: Whats the most annoying thing customers do?

i have had a run of idiots this last week which i wont go into as he was in MY shop telling ME what to charge him w****r and i am still raging thinking about it.
But i had a nice old lady call me to look at her 11 year old built in creda w/d no drum action carbons lovely job i thought.Took plinth off, machine would not budge 2 screws thru the front feet, removed still does not want to come out so removes b/in freezer next to it and find 2 brackets round the back 2 legs screwed to the floor and back left pretty much inaccessable. One hour later and machine is out 3 mins after that it is fixed.Where these brackets part of the fitting kit as they where a perfect fit as i have never seen them before?
    Stroll on ❗
