I hate working in the cold, my old bones can’t stand it.:(
Minus 2 celsius and faced with a Whirlpool washer at the back end of someone’s garage so cramped for space and full of junk that you have to crouch spralled across the threshold with toolbox on the patio, is not my idea of fun!
Coupled with having to endure a customer standing immediately behind me, breathing down my neck, wrapped in full winter survival gear clutching a cup of hot tea watching your every move and constantly asking brainless questions all the while…………….. :rolls:

ALWAYS get the garage appliances at this time of year too :rolls: And considering i’m on a latitude similar to Moscow, it aint fun!
The winter of ’95 sticks in my mind, minus 20 or lower for several days, ran out of inlet valves due to replacing ice damaged ones.
The best was a hotpoint which had been left on rinse hold overnight & naturally had frozen solid.. what did the customer do.. tried it in spin of course.. new motor on that one. Twits. 😕January 14, 2009 at 7:22 pm #107627eastlmark

Just have to look at a fill hose crimp for too long and it will start leaking.

Spending £2000, £3000, possibly £4,000, having whole downstairs laid with fancy 1″ thick quarry tiles, finding the 8kg Electrolux washing machine won’t fit under the utility room worktop, ripping up a few tiles near the skirting leaving a pile of rubble, forcing the front of the machine off the ground as it leans precarioulsy over the remaining tile corners (laid in diamond formation), jammed under the front edge of the worktop.
Then reluctant to spend £65 on the official height reduction kit for the washing machine to allow it to fit properly.

Customer”So are you saying the heater has never worked since I’ve had the machine?”
Me”No, why? how long have you had this problem for?”
Customer”About a week!”

This guy phones me to say his machine is rattling during drain, that he was a motor mechanic and wanted a clue as to what the rattle might be? I suggested he look in the pump as it sounded like a coin was in there?
He didn’t know where the pump was and asked if I call by and sort it for him. 😀
I stopped by and there was the machine with the back panel and lid off in the middle of the kitchen. One mucky finger-nailed mechanic stood alongside with his arms folded.
I went straight to the pump and removed a 5p coin, no probs. Then when I went to refit the back panel he turned to get it for me. ‘Builder’s bum’ had nothing on this guy, maybe I witnessed ‘motor mechanics bum’ in that instance but he was wearing an orange lacey ladies thong!!! 😯 😯 😯

Beginning to notice some customers resorting to underhand methods to save money in these tight economic times.. much more prats cancelling jobs at the last min having found someone to do it cheaper etc..
Woman phones me lunchtime yesterday with a plea to fix her cold Creda fan oven ASAP as she uses it every day blah, blah, told her to calm herself, prob just needs an element, will get to her late afternoon.
Fast forward to 5pm, i’m several miles into the 16 mile journey to this job & the phone rings, its her hubby, sounding pleased as punch with himself, “can we cancel your call mate, managed to get the element off myself, that will save you a trip” pulled to side of road with my blood beginning to boil & explained that i was practically half way there.
“oh well, stay there and i’ll drive up & buy the element off you, at least then youre paying your Diesel” I’m beginning to loose it now but explained as calmly as i could that i was’nt into roadside trading, i have busted my b*lls doing this job at short notice & really, this is breach of a verbal contract.
He was having none of it though, and ended the conversation with what sounded like “f*ckin sue me then” but the mobile signal wasnt great.
I was so furious, i continued towards their house fully intending to get my callout from this basta*rd if it was the last thing i did, but ended up pulling in, thinking about how it might get out of hand & in the end just headed back home. Still makes me mad thinking about it now, but i dont suppose its worth persuing.
God, sometimes i fekkin HATE the general pubic with a passion 👿 👿

I feel your pain I really do, we’ve all had this crap from them and yes it does hurt. It’s the very nature of the job in truth to those like you and I that respond to calls as quick as we do in order to make a crust.
We all get wise after the event and say to ourselves ….“if only I’d phoned her to tell her I’m on my way!”….Just a quick ‘courtesy call’ to say we’re on our way often stops this ruddy hastle.
I’ve fallen foul of my own advice on a number of occasions too. Just too busy swanning from job to job and forgetting to make that all important call on jobs over a few miles out of my way. The times I’ve got on the motorway and suddenly realised I should have made that courtesy call but I’m committed to a 10 mile round trip between junctions to even bother by then….Hey Ho! 🙁

This topic rocks. Thank god it aint only me that imagine impaling very large and sharp objects in customers heads.
Customers that seem to be missing a chromosome or 2. Either that or they are a result of inbreeding wind me up to no end.
Or when they call and say ” my fridge aint cooling how can I fix it? ” When u say ” it needs an engineer call” you always get the ” Oh right then. So you cant tell me how to fix it over the phone then ?????”
:rolls:

Had one today, LG frost free combi, big American style. After spending 30/40 mins diagnosing the fault and explaining it to the customer he decided he only wanted to partially pay the call out charge.
His reasoning was that he expected me to fix it there and then and that would be included in the call out fee (£25 +vat).
Despite the fact that we originally refused to go to the call as we very rarely touch LG’s, he then begged us to go as there was nobody else in the area that would touch it.The only compensation I’ll get is if and when he rings back to have the repair done I’ll have the pleasure of refusing to set foot in his house ever again. 👿
