I never answer the phone out of hours, it’s suicide you only ever get aggro from late callers or the people who think you will drop everything and go out at 11 PM cos little Jonny’s school uniform is stuck in the washer.
When I first started working for myself, I used the home number to start with, soon got another line put in. I got a call at 3.15AM from a man who said,I hope you don’t mind an early call but your advert says call anytime! :rolls:

Like the woman who rang me on Christmas Day morning one year and said “I knew I would catch you in” 😈

    My phone rang at 10.50, 10.54, 11.11, 11.14 & 11.16.

    1st one wanted no call-out.
2nd, 3rd & 4th both admitted machines had been playing up for weeks but wanted to know if I could call today. (Managed to keep 3rd & 4th.)
5th wanted to know why her machine wasn’t spinning but wasn’t willing to try it with an empty drum as she couldn’t see what that would prove.

    Grrr…..

Not a customer, but someone’s probably sold for £25 or thrown out an 18 month old £399 Fagor washer dryer because the drain filter is blocked:

They come up quite often on eBay and the like – “Not draining, for spares/repair”. My best buy was £1.20 for a Siemens washer which had a pen lid stuck in the filter. One minute to repair and £158.80 profit on sale as a recon :).

Re: Whats the most annoying thing customers do?

    Phone just rang.
“Are you the person who repairs washing machines?” (Woman, Liverpool accent, maybe 35, assertive.)
    Yes.
    “Do you cover St Ives?”
No, sorry, not done for years.
“Do you know anyone who does?”
There was a guy in Carbis Bay, not sure if he’s still going, might have his no. somewhere.
“If I rang you back in a little while, do you think you might be able to find it?”
Could do, or I could give you a no. for the Camborne people.
“Thing is, it’s a tenant, we don’t actually live there, and she says it spins but the water doesn’t go out. Thats the drum, isn’t it.” 😆
Er.. no, more likely to be something else.
“Oh, no it’s the bearings, isn’t it. That’s what it was at my house.” :rolls:
    Er.. no….
“Oh, well thankyou for your help..” (clunk)
    :hmm:
    Strange people.
    Mike.

When I first started in the industry the local shop I did my teeth cutting on would make me ring all the ads selling w/m, they found that the filters in most especially the Hotpoint 1800 and 95 series would have enough coins in the sumps to pay for the appliance and the rest was either recon’d or scrapped for parts.

They would also get bulk from scrap dealers, once we picked up 15 hotpoints for 50 quid and emptied almost 80 quid in coins, a gold braclet and a spark plug.

    I reply between 40 -65 quid
She says ” Fcuk off” 😯
    So I did.

Re: Whats the most annoying thing customers do?

    I want a cooker with ceramic hob…

    ok…

it needs to be 60cms to fill the gap and have a storage tray.

    ok…

it also needs to have a lid as ive just got a new kitten and im afraid it will hop onto the hob when its got warm… (new kitten jumping 3 feet in the air??)

unfortunately there arent any on the market that have lids that arent gas, but have you considered a dual fuel or induction hobs?

i dont want gas hob as they are too awkward to clean

ok well I can get an amica induction cooker which meets those needs

oh no dont want one of those, the one ive got now is an amica and i cant get on with the oven. it just wont work properly…

is that cos it doesnt have a fan?

i dont want a fan the fan ovens dont cook as well

um ok… well ive gotta be honest its going to be tough to get something you want without making a compromise

well i dont have to have a lid i suppose if i lock the cat away when im cooking.

ok, well that means only one i know of one the market like that is a multifunction bosch.

ah yes, i was looking at a white bosch in john lewis… how much is one of those…

    quotes,

ooh thats a lot of money

    is that more than jl?

    no its almost the same

ok so are we settled on that one then?

not its too expensive really. it has got paraletic cleaning hasnt it.

    paraletic? do you mean…

    yes…

    PYROLITIC?

    yes,

    no it doesnt

i dont want it then, its too expensive to not have that.

ok, what kind of a price mark were you looking at?

i dont want to go over £400, ive just paid £600 for this cooker, its only 3 months old. maybe if you could give me a trade in of about £300 ive got another £100 i could use.

erm im not sure i could for that amount.

well ok then, ill have to go somewhere else… click… hangs up…

    Phone rings……

C: “I’ve got a 10 day old Bosch Dishwasher that went bang, how soon can you call by and fix it?”

A: “10 days old? You need to contact Bosch!”

C: “They can’t come out for over a week!”

A: “You’d best wait ’til Bosch can sort it then because any independend intervention will not only be costly to you but may invalidate any future warranty claims?”

C: “I don’t care about that, I just want it fixed NOW!”

    A: “Where do you live?”

    C: “Bracknell”

A: “I’m sorry but I no longer cover that area and I seriously suggest you should book a service visit with Bosch, meanwhile don a pair of Marigolds and squirt some Fairy liquid in a bowl”.

C: “No way am I waiting ’til next week, I want another dishwasher NOW so what’s the best make I can buy ‘cos Bosch obviously are no good!”

A: “Miele are pretty good and IIRC you can pop into Bentalls of Bracknell and get one most likely? Harrods also deliver daily in your area, so the choice is yours my friend…..best of luck………….!”

Re: Whats the most annoying thing customers do?

Last week I went to a big cast iron imitation wood burning stove type electric heater. It had blown the fuse and one of the bulbs had broken off in its holder. The 2 bulbs on this face each other and there was not enough room to get in with pliers without unclipping the holder and rotating it 90 degrees. When I did this 3 of the 4 push in wires came out of the holder, resulting in a total strip down job to poke them back in 👿 I eventually got it all back together and the lights now worked. On Saturday I got a call asking me to go back. Apparently the flame effect was not right, all the flames were in the centre of the fire and nothing at the sides. I said I would pop in and take another look when in the area. I knew the lady in question does not go out much so I should be able to catch her in soon enough. This was not good enough for her and she insisted I make an appointment to go back. I therefore had to use diesel, driving the 15 mile round trip just to fix her flame effect. This turned out to be a sheet of translucent plastic that was in back to front, I suppose there must be a diffraction grid on one side.

Re: Whats the most annoying thing customers do?

This New year has definitely brought out the time wasters on the phone. Ive never had so many people wanting straight away calls, no call-out, free estimates, exact prices over the phone.

Ive also had numerous calls cancelling last minute.
If it continues like this you may see me on the news after completely losing it.

Im just going for a lie down, which will be disturbed by another waster.
