Called at a house in central Reading this morning. Parked right outside the house where it is signposted “Residents and Permit Holders Only!”….knocks on the door and my customer dutyfully provides me with a Parking Permit to stick on the dashboard….sorted.
20mins into fixing her washing machine her hubby comes home and wants to park his car outside where my van is. I told him that I’d be another 15-20mins before I’d be out of there and suggested he park further up the street being as he is a Permit Holder anyway.:rolls:
He’s less than happy at that idea, shoots outside and scans the street for a space where I could park my van. He calls me outside and points at a spot 300 or so yards up the street suggesting I move my van right now and park it up there!
Mexican stand-off ensuses with me suggesting that right now he is double-parked and that he move his bl**dy car there and stop bothering me at this point in time. I’ve got a job to do at their request, nearly finished, YOU GO PARK YOUR MOTOR UP THERE MATEY!
His missus steps in at this point and sides with me, lots of banter exchange too and fro by now….seconds later a little fat Traffic Warden appears licking his pencil…”IS THIS YOUR MOTOR? ARE YOU GOING TO MOVE IT NOW OR DO I HAVE TO…..?”
Husband at that point throws his hand up in the air and gets in his motor and moves it up the street, comes back indoors, slams the door and goes upstairs. His missus saying “Just ignore him!”….yeah right………Total pratt! 👿

It never ceases to amaze me how teritorrial people are about ‘their’ parking spaces :rolls:
I had a similar scenario a few years back but the guy marched through the door, failed to notice me behind the machine in the utility room and announced to his wife ‘some cheeky pr*ck is parked in my space’!!
Give him his due though he went crimson with embarrassment when he did spot me, muttered an apology and crept off to the living room where he stayed for the duration.

Went out to a Zanussi ZWF12070 today, loud noise and spots of grease on clothes. Told husband over the phone probably bearings & sealed tub so not worth repairing, but had a job a couple of doors down anyway so went by to check. Sure enough, tub wobbling all over the place & sealed tub nonsense. £132 trade for a new tub from Zanussi.
At this point the wife strode into the room and said, “I’ve been listening to what you say and I simply don’t believe you!”. Thinking she meant the price of the spare, I said, “I know it’s expensive but you’re replacing most of the machine blah blah”. “No, Zanussi are a good brand, they aren’t cheap and the bearings simply wouldn’t go so quickly”.
Somewhat dumbfounded, I showed how much the tub was moving around, pointed out these things are less than £300 new and that was a “cheap” machine. But she simply wasn’t having any of it!
Ended up telling her “Why did you bother calling an engineer if you didn’t want to know what was wrong with your machine?” and walking out. Absolutely mad! 😯

Reminds me the time i looked at a machine with fail bearings. I walk in open the door and feel the play on the drum and tell him the bad news and he says all snotty” But you haven’t looked at the machine yet, you can’t tell that by just opening the door!”

Called on a customer 18months ago and gave him the bad news that his old Hotpoint 1800 series wm that was 20years old was beyond repair, tried to explain that Hotpoint machines are no longer the same standard as his old one and tried to advise him against another Hotpoint. So he bought a Hotpoint WMF740 – I had a callout last week – his bearings had started to get noisy, firstly wouldn’t believe me that it would be the bearings, also wouldn’t believe that it was a sealed drum as his daughter had new bearings slipped into her machine for £50 and expected ME to phone Hotpoint to complain on his behalf !

Took a call this morning for an american style fridge freezer ,it was slightly out of area but decided to book it in advised the customer that we have a fixed price labour charge plus parts …….slight pause on the phone then customer says “so you want to charge me even if i dont want it repaired ” “yes ” i say . “well thats a rip off i dont even know whether i want it repairing yet and would have thought with the way things are that you would be willing to quote free of charge, im a builder and never charge for my quotes” Advised him i repair fridges that take a couple of hours to fix and am not quoting for a£ 50,000 extension that promises 4 months work that may be the difference ……click phone goes dead…..tosser :rolls:

Got a call on friday from someone who is a 2hr drive away.Told them that there would be a call out charge.
The guy was very rude and told me that he wasn’t willing to pay a call out charge.Told him to contact a Spanish tecnico but he replied”I don’t speak spanish”
My reply “not my problem” and put the phone down.
Phone call this morning from the guys wife. The tecnico’s call out charge was twice mine and would i drop everything to sort out their machine.
How i relished turning down that job.March 6, 2011 at 6:31 pm #107875Martin

Woman called yesterday and asked me to go to her daughters house.
I established she was out of my area.
‘I can drive you there if its to far for you!’ she said.
😯
Then she wanted to come round to see me so I could give her advice on where best to buy a new machine.
