today – a s/order fan oven motor arrives 12pm, its been on order for a while so i call cust immediately, “your parts just arrived for your oven, wondered if its ok to pop round to fit?” yeh thats fine they say, so im like “ill be there by half 12… i get there 20 mins later:

me-smelling hot foot and sensing a warmth from the oven “erm has the oven been on in last few minutes?”

nooo just the grill, the wife just got back and was hungry so i did her some cheese on toast, hope thats ok, i used the grill so the fan wont be hot.

ffs! and this cust. is a retired engineer! i was tight on time today so couldnt wait for it it cool and ended up changing the impeller wearing a bloody oven glove >:(

“You want to charge me just to find out what’s wrong with it” or “i’m not paying to find out whats wrong with it i dont want to spend any money on it” and finally fresh in today after cancelling a repair to his mums appliance “can you send the call out charge back as YOU cant repair it ” 👿 just a little selection of the wonderful general public on the phone in the last week or so :rolls:

Had a (once) regular customer send a note in with the cheque I’d waited three weeks for stating she will not use me again for charging her £46 to clean the optical thingy on a Diplo/ Whirlpool dishwasher. The thing she forgot was that I’d agreed to go on a day off as I was on hols the week after and she couldn’t do the other day I had available. I called after 6 as didn’t want to let her down, was a 12 mile round trip ( not including the 35 miles from where I’d been all day. She was upset I hadn’t fitted anything either and still charged the labour??????? Note to self, don’t bother cleaning the bl**~y thing next time replace it to save grief.

tony, we have got that a couple of times over the years, have found a *handwritten* and non-sarcastic letter, stating that it is such a shame to lose a “lifelong customer” works a treat.

    something along the lines of

    Dear Ms SoandSo,

It is with great regret to read your recent letter regarding our repair to your dishwasher. As I am sure you are aware, we went to great lengths to fix your machine in the timescale you required. This not only meant i came in to work during my allotted time off, but also outside of normal hours of business in order not to let you down. The repair also required meticulous attention to detail to recondition the part back to working order, in order to keep the repair within your budget. As you are probably also aware, we kept the labour down to the bare minimum for this very same reason, whereas local rivals would have charged more for such express service and manufacturers would be at least twice the price. In certain cases more unscrupulous companies would have told you its an irrepairable fault, or uneconomical repair and tried to talk you into a new purchase instead, yet still insisting on a call-out fee of at least a similar amount, if not more. As a valued customer, we would like to believe if you have called us out to repair your machine, you would actually like us to repair your machine, which we understand we have done so to your satisfaction. Therefore are we really being quite so unreasonable to expect our expertise in saving you having to purchase either an expensive part or even a new machine being paid for at what the industry would deem a more than fair price?

If for whatever reason you still feel we have fallen below the mark, that you believe what you were charged was an unfair amount we would gladly welcome your constructive critisism, in order to ensure this disappointment does not occur again. We do hope that you could take the time to reconsider your decision to no longer use our services again.

When I have a customer who doesn’t pay for that long ( and there is one) she gets a reluctant and long delayed response to calls for help in the future. Another good reason to avoid answering the phone personally.

thing is atm, every customer seems to be out for a “good deal”. they will more than happily ring round for the best deal they can get on a repair. fair do’s to them, but at the moment the businesses that will suffer are the ones that turn around and give the middle finger to PITA customers. some people were born complainers/slow payers, and giving them short shrift tends to be more cutting off your own nose than teaching them a lesson, as much as we’d like to believe otherwise…

Only if you’re not giving them the best deal 😉 . They might think cheaper is better but they’ll be sorry in the end.

Reminds me of a customer who had a slimline Smeg black dishwasher with leaking water softener o-rings. Spent nearly an hour in total as difficult to get back into his self-fitted kitchen with loose laminate flooring, overlapping furniture doors and no access to hoses at rear.

Charged him the £48 I’d quoted. “What, that’s a bit expensive for a couple of o-ring isn’t it?” Me: “It’s my labour you’re paying for man, not the parts!”. “Yeah, I suppose you do need to make money somehow if you’re working for yourself.”

Do some people think we’re helping them out as some sort of charity?

yesa and your best come back that leaves them floundering is “still, its better than paying £XXX for a new machine, ISNT IT”

Me: Have you got an old towel so I can mop up any water which might spill as I remove this filter, please?
Customer: Oh, don’t worry about the floor. I’ll mop it up after.
    As if.. :rolls:
