had the classic ” holiday weekend panic ” call yesterday. got phoned by the office around 1pm to drop everything and attend a school kitchen for a gas leak. drove 50 odd miles to get there and greeted with compliments on my swift response. goes into the kitchen, and gets confirmation that the combi oven is leaking gas. now, i was aware the area has no natural gas, so when i see an electric combi oven and no lpg equipment either, i start to look for jeremy beadle.
my further questioning reveals that they are aware there is no gas within 500 yards of the building, but are convinced the blue cylinder connected to the back of the unit ( water softener 🙄 😈 ) is leaking fatal fumes – of course, the ” leak ” has been apparent for over a fortnight, but they thought it best to get it sorted as they would be closed for the long weekend.
i left with advice for the janitor on how to clear the drains, and returned to my backlog of calls.
this would be a fantastic job if it weren’t for the customers !Re: Whats the most annoying thing customers do?
I always thoght it was the vacuum cleaner you unblocked in January and they bring it back in November saying
” It`s got the same fault and I`ve only uesd it once”

The ‘husband’ takes time off from work to allow access to repairing the machine. But in an pathetic attempt to display ‘male chauvinism’ declares he “hasn’t a clue as to what the problem is with the washing machine, because that’s the ‘wifes department’ !!!!!” 👿

You: ‘Your Indesit is completely knacked mate, the tub is leaking. It has leaked into the motor and wrecked that and the module. You need a new washer!’
Customer: ‘Right! How much money will you give me for the Indesit?’

Think someone else had this one a while back but…
Had a call last week, customer wanted a call between 12 & 1 only – couldn’t possibly do any other times, I rang her & explained that i would try but couldnt promise anything as the job was out in the sticks plus i had a fair bit of travelling to do. Still she insisted on 12 – 1. As it turned out i got there at bang on 12 o’clock….
OAP, barely able to walk, at home all day etc wanted to “structure her day”
one of the best i did was about a year ago i was out at a dear old lady u know the type cant stop moving boxes and wiping the lid while i am trying to work on her machine which was an old htp so i have the machine pulled out and unplugged and arms inside fitting a belt and the daft old bat gets out the hoover and by mistake plugs in the washer

The ‘hardy perennial’ of a servicemans gripe, can be most annoying especially if they draw up a chair and watch you like a hawk all the while.
Top 10 ways in which this can be overcome:-
1) : Stop what you’re doing look them in the eye and say “Why don’t I give you a shout when I’ve fixed it? “
2) : “This won’t take me long, meanwhile could you keep an eye on my van, its got lots of expensive gear in there and the alarm doesn’t work!”
3) : “Leave this to me and you may carry on with the housework, the hall carpet needs special attention I reckon!”
4) : Print off an A4 sized notice in red ink and place it on the floor “Health & Safety Regulations: DO NOT CROSS THIS LINE – MAN AT WORK!”
5) : “Best keep well clear of me lady, I’m just getting over Chickenpox!”
6) : “Could you stand by the main fusebox and when I shout, hit the switch!”
7) : “Stand well clear please, this could be messy?”
8 ) : “There’s a suspicious looking character across the street, you might like to keep on the look-out for I reckon?”
9) : “Whoops! Pardon me?…too much garlic last night!”
10): “This model always makes be swear, best keep well out of ear-shot!”

I did kinda use no.9 once, sort of slipped out when no one was around, customer then walked back in the room “god – that water stinks in there, doesnt it” she said. I just smiled & nodded.

My mobile rings (I left it on the worktop across the other side of the kitchen) whilst I’m pinned tight behind a washing machine machine trying to un-hook the waste hose……
….it rings and rings as I wrestle to break free of the confined space, banging my head on the worktop as I get up………
..I grab the phone and the bloke on the other end says :-
“…… so sorry to trouble you but I thought you may know where the nearest Launderette is…?” :con: 👿

called to a Indes**it toploader customer said that on/off button had come loose so i looked for the plug and of course it was behind the machine so i put one hand on the machine and one hand on the radiator for leverage whilst pulling it out and got a belt 😯
turned out customers son got it cheap from france and because it had a 2 pin plug on it he put a piece of earth cable from the motor earth pin to the radiator :eeek:

Repairing an old bendix dishwasher the other day with blocked syphon tubes… old man customer insisted on helping me by washing every bit that I put on the work top. I cleaned the blue syphon tubes myself ‘cos they’re a bit delicate but I left him to clean the other bits whilst I up ended the machine to clear the transfer hoses etc.
Went to reasemble the machine only to find my bluetooth headset neatly washed and dried amongst the filters.
£50 literally down the drain… 😡

How many more times am I going to get blinded by a ‘helpful’ customer and his 500,000 candle power torch? It’s always when you’ve got your head stuck in the inner drum with a tiny torch looking for a foreign object and some pratt shines his new toy over your shoulder.
I’m usually such a placid man but this customer learnt a few new words!!! 👿
