For a lot of repairs the soap drawer has to come out and I usually leave it on the draining board or in the sink. So many times the customer says “Oh, I didn’t know that came out!” and proceeds to clean said soap drawer in the most time consuming manner possible. In the meantime, I have changed the timer or whatever and am twiddling my thumbs waiting to put the drawer back so I can try out the machine. π

That customer who decides to lean on the machine when its resting on your foot/ leg any other anatomical part used for propping up the machine in a tight space.
Or the comedians who say ‘Don’t take it personally but I hope I don’t see you again!’Friendly wave and a cheery ‘arse’ under your breath

Went to do a Hotpoint WM bearing job yesterday, noticed a nick in the door seal lip. I told her her cat had been having a chew (which they do if silly people leave the door open) π
‘Does it leak?’ I asked her, ‘No’ she replied
‘Are you absolutely sure’? – ‘Certain’ she said.
Do I even need to tell you the rest of the tale?
Does the job – gets the machine all cleaned up and back in position – job sorted – will be back just in time to take the little wifey to her Dr’s appointment
Fills her up (the machine not the wifey).
‘Oh dear me!’ I exclaimed as a large puddle formed on the floor ‘it’s leaking down the front, it must be that nick in the door seal that you said did’nt leak’.
‘Now I will have to take it all to pieces again to put a new seal on’ – but I will come back tomorrow to do that. ( “Thinks” – because if I don’t go now I will be up on a murder charge)
Little did she realise how near she had come to having my lump hammer embedded in her cranium.

I had the privilege of meeting yet another new customer this morning… Mrs Twisted-Knickers. π
As she showed me to her kitchen I sensed ‘an air of expectation’ about her general demeanour. A kind of sixth sense if you like that one developes after dealing with, as I have, customers like her for 4 decades now. 8)
Her Zanussi built-in Oven had a worn fan (which I subsequently replaced later as it happens) she dissappeared into another room to let me get on with the repair, or so I thought π
Time passed and I called her into the kitchen to show her oven was working now at presented her with the bill for my services. She studied the bill carefully then proclaimed that she wished only to pay for half of my labour charge. π―
When I asked “Why’s that then?” she declared that I had been in her house a total of 20 minutes and yet during that time my mobile phone rang 3 times and that I spent a total of 10 minutes talking to other customers on the phone and in so doing was not attending to her oven. Therefore she concluded and insisted that she was only prepaired to pay half, and stood with hands on hips looking very angry. πΏ
I meanwhile resorted to my many years of dealing with such ‘types’ and also brought into force skills derived from attending lessons in the John Prescott School of Diplomacy. By simply opening the oven door, whereupon she could clearly see I hadn’t put it all back together yet and with certain air of extreme complacency I declared:
…. “Fair enough!…… I trust you will be able to complete the rest of the repair yourself then?” :rotfl:

On a serious note martin, i find the practice of answering mobiles in customers houses very unpro and often (when it happens to me) downright rude. I never even take a mobile into the customers house, or at least would not answer it if it rang. In the days I had engineers, i banned the practice after a complaint by a customer.

I’m afraid I disagree Mark, mobile phones are part and parcel of everyone’s life these days including the customer and especially in business.
I have never in 15 years of owning one ever had a customer moan at me for using one while in the house carrying out repairs, they know full well that you are mobile and rely on it as a part of your business. If it rings during conversation with the customer, depending on their reaction, I would either answer or not….
Each case on it’s own merit π

Variety is the spice of life. I do not advertise my mobile number, and do not give it out to customers. I have an answerphone which these days most people are used to and will leave a message., 95{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the time I have a full days work and would spend more time on a Monday/Tuesday answering the phone in traffic or in a customers house if I gave out my mobile number. The general lack of consideration that several customers ( usually so called friends ) have in ringing you at all hours is something that is bad enough on a landline, god forbid they ever get my mobile number.

Exactly the same reasons as Jim for leaving my mobile permanantly swiched off in the van , only really use it for contacting customers to make sure they`re at home when they should be or if I`m running very late or early(rarely).
Also stops the wife calling to ask me to take home a pint of milk or some other domestic matter π .

I am required to carry my cellphone 24/7 (in the contract), but when I am in the customers house, and they are around, I will never answer it, but silence the ringer, and say to the customer ‘if its important, they will leave a message’ which usually results in a conversation starting with the customer saying ‘How did we ever get on without all these modern…….’
The way I see it, the customer is paying your wage while you are in their house, and deserves your full attention. I have explained this to my boss (who pays me some of the money the cutomers give him), and he kicked up a fuss at first, but when I explained my reasoning behind it and the fact that Mrs Smiths fridge will still be @#${e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}^* in 10 minutes, so its not that big a deal that I answer my phone so the girl in the office can give Mrs Smith a time when I can call around and tell her its @#${e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}*.
Customer service is what it is all about. No customers, no service, no money. Its as simple as that. π

a couple of years ago, while working in the commercial laundry trade, one of my work mates was working on a three phase bolt down washer. as he went to the isolator on the wall to switch power off, his mobile rang from the office – the result was he took the call and then went back to work on the machine, thinking he had switched power off but in fact not actually doing so.
quick actions from the laundry assistant almost certainly saved his life when he stuck across 2 phases. what followed was a period off work for him and a health and safety visit for the company, result of which we were forbidden to take mobiles on site after that, and i still leave both mine in the van now.
life is more precious than the slight possibility of missing speaking to a customer, who will most likely leave a message or ring back anyway.October 22, 2005 at 9:07 pm #107350iadom

I have educated my customers to realise that I am a public service, not a public convenience. π

You NEED the mobile IMO. If the customer can’t talk to you there and then, they will go somewhere else. π
Anyway, back to topic…
I’ve had two identical phone calls this morming. ‘Do ya install washas?’
‘Yes madam, all of our machines come with free delivery and installion.’
‘Nah! I’ve already got da washa!’
‘Oh, you’ve moved house? and you want us to install your old machine?’
‘Nah! I bought a new washa, but they wouldn’t install it!’
‘Who?’
‘Currys!’
(Under my breath) ‘FFS!’
‘Can you come and do it?’
‘Sure, for Β£40….’
‘Oh! I’ll ring you back…’

Went to a farmhouse today and all was going well until I forgot to duck for the low door frame, the resulting smack to the head knocked me to the floor and as I write this I have a lovely egg size bump on my forehead and mild headache.
The witty response from the customer – “oh… mind your head” πΏ

My first post, glad to find this site!
I had an elderly man answer the door in a fluster. He popped his head round the door and said I hope I donβt mind but he was undressed. I thought he was showering so said βdonβt worry about it” and walked to the dishwasher. He followed me and stood, naked, while I fixed it. I always thought the customers home is not my domain but next time I get a naturist I may ask for some clothes (unless under 45 female).
