Anyone know whether this is likely to be a fan problem or something controlling it ? (suppose I could put my tester on the fan wires)
    Peter

Its the fan or the wiring to it

The fan is controlled directly with the compressor and therefore if the compressor is working it can only be the wiring or the fan itself.

The only way to run a fridge and the freezer is to put a thermometer in both cabinets.

Only then can you truly gauge the temperatures and the adjustments you make.

(The numbers on the dial mean nothing other than a reference point to change the setting from. A pen stroke or a pointer do the same thing as a number – nothing)

Yes it could be an Airflow problem as well as a thermostat problem, as well as it could be a design problem, as well as it could be about 10 other things or a combination of more than one thing

(How long is a piece of string?)

Play around with the settings and if it doesn’tcome right an engineers experience is the only solution

All F&P’s will add small amounts of hotwater when filling even though the cold only is selected and indicated.

Only if you have a cross draft to replace the air that is trying to exhaust, and that the temperature is enough to cause the air to rise against any backdraught.

I a normal fire convection currents are very strong.

You convection current will be very sluggish.

(Other?) appliance engineers (myself included?) aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed and those in the general public looking to do their own repairs aren’t from the top of the Gene Pool either else they’d be paying some other muggins to do the work.
So if I follow Martin’s reply to my letter:

Replying to multiple posts requires adopting the “cut & paste” technique. Adding the “quote=” manually.
My point exactly but this is not obvious

No! but with experience you will realise that any and all of Kens explanations need not only reading carefully, but reading ‘between the lines’ as well, then and only then will the penny drop

I thought I’d add this post to point out a major problem I had and possibly others like me had in following the current instructions.

The only problem that “stood out” I might add

In your first post you said

It does not run when you switch it on but the compressor gets quite hot after a while

You later seem to modify this statement

started it tonight & it all started working fine UNTIL the freezer got to about -4 and the fridge a little bit lower than outside, then it just stopped again..

    Dave is right

My concern here is you say that it is not running but the compressor gets hot which sounds to me as if it is the compressor trying to start but can’t (siezed).

but a seized compressor will not cool but yours is doing some cooling right?

A seized compressor will overheat from trying to start which you will notice by the machine cycling on for 10 seconds then off for say 5 minutes

A compressor will also overheat if the condenser fan is not working however this will take some time (possibly hours) and the result is the machine will start cooling then stop cooling which sounds to be your problem

Condenser fans have been known to start when cold then slow and even stop when warm.

Your condenser fan and evaporator fan (inside the freezer) must run all the time your compressor runs

Also you must not switch a fridge/freezer off then back on immediately.

They must be left off for at least 10mins to allow the pressures to equalize else the compressor will not restart

Thermistors are just a temperature dependant variable resistor so an ohmeter will test these. Expect around 3000 ohms. The resistance will vary with just your fingers touching it.

Power off :zap: :zap: :zap: :zap: :zap: :zap: :zap: :zap: :zap:

    Trust this helps

I’d get an engineer to do the repair rather than risk fatally damaging yourself or the machine

UK boys will reply shortly as we don’t have this brand in OZ

Possibly a condenser (external) fan not working

    Have you cleaned the condenser

Check but don’t touch electrics etc whilst plugged in.

    Post make and model

Did you need to leave the door open for it to work

A corresponding exhaust vent may need checking
