Now that is the best definition of ‘hopeless optimism’ I’ve seen this year.

Since when do anything they make last this long :rotl:

Dead on regarding the skill set.

I often wonder how those that only repair washers and T/D’s survive. Although the sight of certain fully integrated dishwashers make the heart sink, they do pay the bills. 🙂

I agree, if they want an exact time or an after hours call I explain it can be done, but will cost more. They always accept an AM or PM in the end 🙂

    Re: websites

I use http://www.officelive.com/en-GB/free-website which was posted by someone from another thread on this site.

It was completely free, very easy to set up and looks reasonably good. (Well I think so 😛 )

Me and my daughter set mine up in just over a day.

    I watched that last night as well. Before I could even say anything to my 14 year old son, she said ;

‘No! don’t even think about it!’

😥 Life was much more fun before I got married…

    Re: Receipts & Invoices

I pay a printer to do me several thousand A5 NCR receipts with all my details on. (£100 or so for 5 thousand).
It not only looks more professional, but also act as latent advertising. Customers keep the receipt, and therefore always have my number to hand.

I’ve gone back to plenty of cpeople who have had one of my receipts from six or seven years ago, and have said they were glad they’d kept it as that was how they found my number again.

As for invoicing the bigger clients, I use the free version of Microsoft Office Accounting. It’s not too bad to set up, just a bit fiddly. But it’s good enough for what I do.

Good point Jim, I’ve worked for Indesit, Ariston, Indesit/Ariston (merloni), Servis, myself, Hotpoint and finally myself again.
Most of the company engineers I knew were pretty knowledgeable about what they were doing (there was always the odd chancer though, and they soon found life tough.) and did a damn fine job.

Most of them are now self employed and making it pay well.

    Re: WTA Elections 2009/11

Made a long post, thought twice, deleted it.

UKWG has been a benefit to me, I haven’t put no where near as much in as I’ve got out. I suspect that’s true for most.

I wouldn’t normally understand some of the criticism, but I’ve been on a few committees in the past and know that no matter what you do there’s always some out there there that will slag you off and suspect foul play. It’s in their nature, you have to accept it and just get on with things. As I guess you guys do.

Having met John from Notts, I was tremendously impressed with the enthusiasm and professionalism he displayed with regards to ISE, it proved to me that here was not only people who knew what they were doing, but people who were passionate about it as well.

Wish I could be half as good.

Anyway, point of the post… I for one appreciate what people on this site give to me as an independent tradesman, I just hope at some stage I could/and will give as much back.

A big thank you to all that put in the time and effort it takes to get things done, some of us really do know what you’ve done for us.
