    Re: Advisory Council

The job description is more or less what it say’s on the can, i.e. to uphold the UKW service charter as agreed to by paticipating members.

The only thing that we have to understand is that this has to be done remotely by the Council members via e-mail, fax and phone.

The only thing that concers me is that if this is pushed out to outside commercial interests they may require site visits and litigation which would be a whole different ball game entirely.

Our maximum penalty would be the removal of a member from the E-job
system. And that is about as far as I would feel comfortable.

With regards the possibility of supporting some big insurance co. or work provider against an individual service provider, then you had better exclude me now, as it is not a position I would care to be involved with.

    Re: DASA meeting

    Ken,

Can I thank you for giving the full story as I along with the vast amount of members of both UKW and for that matter DASA. Were always under the impression that Kev was sued only for personal comments made on UKW site regarding N.E.S.N.

Kev was given the mission of Network Dasa and fair play to the lad he brought home the bacon with the best deal in the land as regards corporate work in this trade.

I have said many times before the M.F.I. work came at a very critical time for my own business. Can you imagine how guilty I now feel when I hear that I benifited from much needed work that was deliverd to my door. when one of the key person’s responsible was not only unable to avail himself of the work but sued for his efforts on behalf of his DASA bretheren.

The Whole of DASA should have supported Kev if these are the full facts.
If there was no legal obligation to do so then there was, at the very least a moral one.

There should also have been representations made to Carrol Madern by DASA officers with the full fact’s when she took over as M.D. of N.E.S.N. as she may have been given a jaundiced view of the account of what went on, by people who managed to hang on to their job’s after Trubshaw was booted out, who may also be hiding their own guilt. We should also have made an offer of financial help

Kev for a long time I could’nt understand why you were so critical towards DASA, now I understand. With your permission I would like to bring this matter to as many DASA members as possible and present these matters to council for their attention and response.

As like me, they have been kept in the dark over this matter they should be given the chance to make amends for any injustice you have suffered on their behalf.

    Trev,

No one should attempt any gas installation unless they are Corgi registered, full stop. Your last line said it all.

    Re: Repairs@ Expansion

The biggest hurdle to overcome is the apathy of the trade towards itself.
We have had four meetings now and it is nearly always the same faces without exception that bother to turn up. It does’nt matter how many brilliant idea’s we have unless we can convince the buggers to get more involved.

how many subscribing members do we have at this point in time so that we can gauge how effective the lure of e-jobs will be. this really eludes to the 10{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} goal we are chasing.

I know we have still got the giant mail shot to come where we should hit everyone involved in the independant trade. perhaps we need a brainstorming session of how to enthuse others to our vision of how our trade could be if we all stuck together.

    Re: Repairs@ Expansion

The very second any UKW member recieves work from an e-job request
we have then already become a work provider.

It’s just at this stage we are not stepping on anyones toes, in so much that it is directed for the present at the general public.

Obviously Ken has more technical information on the capabilities of what the e-job module is capable of as opposed to the full ACH module.

So just for our information and to give us somthing to think about can we allow Ken to tell us the full capabilities of the e-jobs module.

We already know that some of the smaller manufacturers are trying to break away from their respective existing service provider managment partners. And they may not need the full blown capabilities of ACH.

Just for the record I personally dont want to see the day that CDSL are the only game in town.
The second a manafacturer goes with them they know that they loose control of thier spares and this might give some of these smaller manufacturers an alternative.

So just as a brainstormin exercise I would like to ask Ken to fire away and tell us the full capabilities of the e-jobs module.

    Fire away Ken.

    HI Steve,

Try switching off the appliance and unpluging it as it should then restart in normal operation mode by default

Would we not be better to launch E-jobs and make sure it is stable with no bugs and get some positive feedback in the forums before we bolt on extra bells and whistles.

    Re: Repairs@ Expansion

Are we talking about a cut down version of ACH here. Because as we are all well aware there is already a heafty admin charge levied on this work by the w.p.’s already and unless the work provider is willing to stump up the cost of using the system then I think there is very little left in the cost of a completed job for us poor sods to pay for it.

If it is your intention to ask the W.P.’s for the cost of running it. they will be very suspicious as they will much prefer using their own individual systems as they have total control, no matter how good a new system might or might not be be.

    as ever just an opinion

Like P said there can be no let up till it really bites home. It’s just a shame that the biggest benifactors will be the insurance company’s, who are to gutless to do the job themselves.

Should we not put pictures and retail prices of finished goods and the main spare parts for the very same appliances on the front page of this site.

We have had over 2 million hits in less than eighteen months, so there is now enough of an audience to start asking some very obvious and serious questions re the spares pricing conundrum of domestic appliance manufacturers.

Perhaps if their spares were realistically priced they would not be able to discount the appliances so heavily. Or should we wait till we are all either out of a job or just delivery boy’s

Let’s just have a modicum of caution, the more they give the more control they will expect. The only thing they may not expect is that the guys who started this whole community are on a crusade to try to improve the lot of independant service provider.
We got suffed along the way before with the software people and people wanting to close us down when they did’nt like what we said. I am not saying this move wont work, on the face of it it seems the answer to a maidens prayer but we do need to be careful.

On reflection the warts an’ all approach has got us this far, which has us
all gobsmacked if the truth be known. But it’s good to pose questions though from time to time just to check we’re not becoming meglamaniacs.

I do think that as soon as e-jobs launches, that we should all be pushing it for all its worth and keep on pushing till we get national coverage. We will then be a force in our own right, not just a chat room for engineers.

    Re: Ready or not?

    Ken,

Without wishing to upset any one I really believe that Martin has some strong points and I could be wrong but I also get the feeling that Chris has made similar points of late.

UKW was born in a maelstom of disenchantment with the way our trade was going, along with some of the great injustices that were being perpetrated on some of our trade comrades. The savagery of some of our ealiest postings have changed to more reasoned debate on new topics and events as they unfold.

In a way we are growing up as a community and as such we should try to lead and encourage the site to be more mature and corporate in it’s dealing’s with everyone.

We somtimes take on challenges we can do fuck all about except moan i.e. Corgi.
I also feel we are starting to spread ourselves a little thin on the ground by taking on too many projects all at the same time. no one doubts our committment but is’nt it better to do a good job on one or two things instead of a piss poor one of several.

Let’s get the stuff we have all already agreed on, up and running first, E- jobs, then ACH, as these are the things the average Joe wants to see i.e more work and better paid work.

If we concentrate our efforts on these things, then the whole trade will see that we are starting to make a difference. They will then start to join up for subscriptions which will allow us to do even more.

We care supposed to be a business so let’s start acting like one. forget the beer tokens that’s for doleies so lets not put ourselves in the same catagorey.

We are starting to look like headless chickens running around trying to do everything all at the same time. Let’s stop slagging anyone off Dasa, manufacturers, work providers, insurance companies because at some stage we are going to need to work with all of them to sell the idea’s we are working on.

Lets have a period of consolidation and give us time to catch our breath.
These are just suggestions not instructions so dont take the huff.

    Sean
