Hi Dave – any chance of that manual?

    Thankyou

Thankyou Dave my email is hollytree.technical@googlemail.com

Thankyou Kaibart – I wondered as I remembered reading about these motors causing strange faults but had not had to deal with one.

Trading standards finally called me back today and they agreed that I have not done anything wrong and that the customer has just been unlucky, they’re also happy to make formal written statements to that effect if I should need them to.
So now we wait and see what the customer decides to do but I suspect that may be the end of it.
Thank you all for your support and advice.

I went today with another seal to prove that it was not the seal at fault.
I ran the machine on spin with no seal fitted and it was still noisy just without the burning rubber smell.
As the customer was insistent that she wanted proof of what was wrong and with her agreement that I would be unable to reassemble it without new parts that I did not have (and was not going to purchase) i took the machine apart in front of her, there is no drain hole between the bearing seal and the inner bearing so as can be seen from the images there was no rust marks, I believe that the images even with the camera having failed to fully focus shows what I found.

I think that the owner of the machine may be more accepting of the problem now but her father is still adamant that it is my fault and will be telling the citizens Advice Bureau that at their next appointment on thursday and he is still looking to take me to the courts.

The one other thing that he has said is that he supposedly has a video from 4 to 5 days after my visit showing the machine as noisy though I have not seen the video or any of their reports that they supposedly have.

Just to keep this updated – I phoned the local trading standards Thursday lunchtime but as the person that I needed to talk to was out of the office I had to leave a message with their colleague and they should get back to me tomorrow (I was off the island Friday).

In the meantime the customer tells me that they have spoken to the citizens advice service (national phone service), I also asked the customer for a copy of the report but apparently they do not have a proper written report yet just text messages (which I have also not seen) from the engineer (a hotpoint service agent), apparently the gist of these messages is that it is the seal at fault and that I should never have fitted a non genuine seal but without seeing the whole of the original messages in context I will have to that with a large dose of salt.

I am due to go back to the customer on Monday or Tuesday with another door seal to prove that it is not the problem.
I am also thinking of putting the machine on to a spin programme without having any door seal fitted and recording doing so on the phone.

These commercial machines often have options about how to start them e.g. when you press the button or when you close the door, another one is also that some will only run when the rinse tank reaches temperature. It may be worth looking in the base at the front as sometimes there are some coloured single connectors down there that look like they have no function but are usually the way of setting the options. Could really do with a wiring diagram (often located behind the front panel) to be able to say more.

Thinking about it you may need to check the controller – it may be a mechanical motorised unit with multiple cams and sometimes the rinse one will be an adjustable cam so it may be that that is out of calibration.

They have apparently had another engineer out who has given them a report to say that it is the door seal at fault (I have not yet seen the report) and that they will be going to trading standards and the small claims court if I don’t agree to refund the door seal repair by end of play today.

I don’t remember seeing any signs of the old door seal catching (the old one had a tear in the bottom of the front lip) and I know that as they wanted to know if it may be worth spending the money on the machine that I took extra time to look at it more closely so I would have checked for free play in the bearings (it is something that I tend to check out of habit anyway). I remember that I even went as far as un-bolting one of the suspension legs at the bottom end to check for wear.

I believe that it is bearing failure as the movement in the drum is about 2mm side to side and up/down and is an even amount no matter where you handle the drum.

    Thank you

Its an Electrolux based machine so check the insulation resistance of the drying element and if it is around 3 meg or below then change it.

I don’t know that model but check for things like burnt connections (especially common on the smaller machines), also is the rinse tank getting hot as many won’t run till the rinse tank is up to temperature (it may be that it has multiple elements in the rinse tank and 1 or 2 of them have failed making it slower). I would also be looking to see if it has a rinse pump and if so if that works.

Check the resistance of the coil on the heat exchanger (Front Left at the bottom) – I have only seen one of this error code and on mine it was open circuit, the error automatically corrected itself after I replaced it.

    Valve part No: 00631199

This machine is being awkward – I have tried changing both the valves and the pressure switch with no change.
The one thing that I have noticed is that it seems to work okay on a cotton wash but always fails on a mixed load cycle.
It also turns out that I am the second engineer to look at this machine and that it may already have a new power module (I am not certain if they were trying to fix the same issue or a different one – the old lady who owns it only knows that it doesn’t work but doesn’t remember the original issue).
Do the power modules require some form of configuration or are they pre programmed?
Any other ideas as to what may be the cause?

Thank you Dave – the one time that I dn’t think about the owners manual and it has the code in it.
Seeing as both valves work and it fills to what I suspect to be the correct level before it stops I may have to try changing the analogue pressure switch.

Re: Whirlpool top loader bearings replacement

Officially You can’t change the bearing in this one as it is part of the gear case assembly which is press riveted together meaning that you are supposed to replace the gearbox.
I have one at the moment where I am trying to disassemble the gearbox to repair it but it is on the back burner at the moment as it is a customers spare machine which they haven’t used for over a year.
