The Copyright Act of 1998 does not permit the copyright of a word, name, a title, a slogan or a phrase.
However, names, titles, slogans and phrases may be formed into a logo which is trademarkable therefore this can be covered.
Basically, Virgin as in the Virgin Media or Airlines cannot copyright the word VIRGIN but they can design a logo which they have and that is then protected by trade mark. This trademark cannot be used legally without their permission
So in this case providing you do not use the registered trade mark (their logos) or imply you are the company themselves which could lead to the consumers confusion, then you are absolutely fine.
They are just blustering and blowing in the wind. A friend of mine always advertising in YELL using the manufacturers names and tells several manufacturers to … how shall i say … Go Away whenever the new issue comes out
If they contact you again advise them to write to your solicitors and put the matter before them. 😀 😀

ParticipantRe: UKW Subs Funding – the future?
It seems to me in the various threads now running on the subject that no one has yet said No we don’t need a new trade association because of …..
All I have seen over the now 100’s of posts is yes we need it but I want it to do this or that.
So definitely we need to do it. Stop talking about it and start the process, the whole point of the TA once running is to follow the democratic wishes of its membership. We cannot set out an agenda for work until we form the association. So lets form the UK Whitegoods Independent Service Engineers Trade Association or UKWISE for short. :D:D or whatever its to be called.
I am glad to see Ken and Sean having the debate it shows that you both want the same goal but see the attainment of it in different ways. I agree with Sean, the only ones entitled to carry the TA card and TA logos should be full subscribing members of the TA. I agree with Ken, we need to do something to ensure that joining and paying the fee is going to be both rewarding and beneficial to the applicant. So I am in agreement with both of you.
Now for something controversial, I propose that if the subs be converted to a TA as was suggested, that next year the sub be raised to £100 to cover the additional costs of running the TA. Full members can then get the cards or whatever at cost or for free. Why not advertise it, join now for £65 or whatever it currently is or next year pay the full amount.
I am pretty sure most of us can afford the increase and I understand UKW allow the fee to be paid by monthly standing order.
Just my thoughts

ParticipantRe: SERVIS PDA TERMINALS
Scratch that …
Engineer visited his first one today and found it totally knackered. PDA Terminal about as much use as a handbrake on a canoe. Oh well, do it the old fashioned way, order the module and so on and so on.

My engineers were trained on the use of this item last week.
It basically fault finders the unit and where necessary reprograms the eprom. One of my hotpoint specialist engineers said it was old Hoperloni kit.
Still waiting to see a machine in the field to use it on but no doubt that will occur soon.

ParticipantRe: Washing Machine recommendations
For my two pennys worth.
My engineers are some of the tightest around and would only splash the cash on something that delivered not only value for money but would also want the best there is for the cheapest they could get. Thats not to say they dont want quality though.
They want the ferrari and for Daewoo money and expect it to be as reliable as a BMW.
Having installed some 50 plus units including some for our staff, my engineers would now happily spend the money and purchase the ISE machine rather than anything else.
We purchased one of the first units available to the independents. We have put that unit on test in our workshops since the day it arrived some 14 months ago and it runs Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.30pm constantly and yes I mean 9 hours a day, 5 days a week for 14 months, washing uniforms etc. Its never failed once, not even the pump. Thats semi commercial use on a domestic appliance.
Only time will say if its reliable or not, but evidence so far states that next to nothing in the same price range is as good and as reliable.
Simple fact, if it were my money to be spent; on an ISE it would go.

Ken & John
We are up for taking these as per our discussions with John Hopwood, although we would struggle to get it into domestic use, the semi commercial side is certainly of interest.

Seems that payments are indeed getting better.
I’ve just been paid for a job we completed and invoiced on the 07/07/06.
No wonder my accounts team put the account on stop, 10 months to get paid for a £47.00 job. Absolute joke.
